new Demul alpha , thoughts on CAVE CV1000 emulation ?

Post by s8n »

hi members , a new alpha is out and it supports CAVE CV1000 emulation. I have tested it out on my ASUS Laptop which has a 2.2GHZ / 2.9 turbo CPU and middle grade GPU , i have noticed a huge speed up compared to MAME's CAVE CV1000 emulation.

anyone else tried the alpha what are your thoughts ?

I haven't tried it myself, but Xyga said in the emulation thread that the in-game speed was still off, although he did report "more acceptable" lag.

Yeah for having tested the latest MAME w/ BGFX vs. latest DEmul alpha on a relatively wimpy laptop (i3-4030u, GeForce 820M), I can tell DEmul is considerably faster with close to zero hiccups, any game, with low cpu-gpu load, when MAME almost maxes out my system.

The thing is, apparently there is no way to control the fullscreen output resolution in DEmul, the scaling is tied to whatever your desktop resolution is, and ends up showing lots of disgraceful artifacts as a result, you'd need a more favorable panel like 1600x1200 to get it to show a clean picture.
Too bad such a simple setting is not available in this emulator/plugin.
A linear filter is available in the video options but so ugly you'd better leave it off.

Anyway yes DEmul is better than before (when the CV1000 games graphics were obviously wrong), also I've mentioned it feels less laggy though that's just what I've felt, not measured, maybe the smoothness of the animation has fooled me.

Indeed if you've got a powerful-enough PC just stick to MAME, especially the newest GroovyMAME because it allows to compensate for the video lag a bit.
And it features the same aesthetics settings the regular MAME does, like integer scaling or CRT shaders and filters.

Broken Record Post-Scriptum: missing slowdowns during certain patterns or entire chunks of intense action, which makes you think the games played like this should be re-categorized as 'Bullet Fucking Hell'.

What settings are you even supposed to use? It still feels pretty much unplayable to me just considering the input lag

Thought it was ok for learning Ibara when I played it on emu and PCB back to back for a few days. That game doesn't have as much slowdown as the others, and for most tricks if you can do it with harder settings (ie. less slowdown, same w/ the PS2 port) chances are you can do it when its easier on PCB. Less input lag fullscreen than windowed. I found a way through graphics card settings to get past the ugly scaling and have doubled pixels for 640p TATE and it was decent.

Does messing with the blitter really never get to a point where there's more slowdown than on PCB or it's just too innacurate to be worth using? Never bothered changing it from default (which always had less than PCB.) People played the silvergun XBLA port that had all slowdown removed & maybe even more input lag than demul can have so eh

By the way anyone got the Pink Sweets parent rom to work (pinkswts) ?

The release states it's in sync with MAME roms but I don't think it's the case, here it says 'u2' is missing in the romset, happens with;

pinkswts
pinkswtsb

Must be an error in the games list they're using.

Think its related to the below, likely this will be reflected in the next mame release too?

Not sure, since the 'u2' files are not present in the official MAME pinkswts romset description anyway.

XX works fine here.

The bad dumps are an issue of course, but in this case I believe it's just a wrong list, DEmul is looking for files that shouldn't be here, at least in regards to MAME.

EDIT: no rom named simply 'u2'. Some cv1k romsets have them, but pinkswtw as of 0.176 is not one.

Just rename the files.
