Least Favorite Cave Shooter
Re: Least Favorite Cave Shooter
Deathsmiles and Deathsmiles II are just not fun to me, I'm surprised Guwange is some peoples least favorite, I wouldn't even consider it near the bottom of the list for Cave games.
Warning: This game is intensely Japanese. We're talking "Circle means O.K" territory here

I have personally always had a lot of love for Pink Sweets Arrange mode. That is so good and pretty much the o ly cave game where I really enjoyed trying to squeeze everything out of the scoring system.
The original is just waaaaaaaay too hard to be that much fun for me personally. As much as I love the visual style of that game (and also Ibara) they are just in my opinion far too hardcore and transparently designed to just steal your money more than other Cave games.

Love it when six-month-old threads are suddenly resurrected.
Reading six pages of hatred made me think hard...I actually dislike more Cave games than I thought!
I mean, the love tier includes DOJ, SDOJ, DDP, DFK, Futari, Guwange, Ketsui etc.
But I just cannot get into:
Deathsmiles
Deathsmiles 2
Akai Katana
Dangun Feveron
ESP Galuda's first stage is the most boring stage ever.
Ibara is OK, but like others my experience stems from the PS2 game only.
Ah well...DFK BL on Steam soon. The world is a good place.

Re: Least Favorite Cave Shooter
I was going to say Guwange, until I thought of the spider-cat boss
So I'll probably have to go with Dangun Feveron then
Which is still insanely good, just not as good as the others
Come to think of it - Mushihime Sama. It looks and sounds magnificent, but it doesn't really distinguish itself gameplay-wise, does it

Re: Least Favorite Cave Shooter
I haven't played all of Cave's shooters yet, but my least favorite ones so far are: Akai Katana, Guwange, Espgaluda 2
If I were forced to narrow it down to only one, I'd pick Akai Katana. The other two choices are much better in terms of art and music at least, and in the case of Guwange, slightly less annoying to play.

Dangun and Ibara; I'm pretty disgusted by both.

Re: Least Favorite Cave Shooter
There are still plenty I haven't given proper time too but of the ones I've played Guwange stands out as the most upsetting to me. I can see why some people really like it but if the game is about controlling a separate drone from your craft then it's not for me.
Incidentally that's also what stopped me from playing Deathsmiles on high difficulties: suicide bullets are a dubious proposition at the best of times and the point at which swizzling round your familiar to soak them up is the only way to get through is the point I bow out.
I've not played every CAVE game or any that I thought was bad, at worst it's a matter of "this is too hard and too much like what I don't like for me to have any realistic chance of progress". The thing that makes me rate Guwange so low is that the thing I don't like about it prevents me from enjoying other parts of the game that look really appealing. Like spidercat! Whereas in DOJ, say, playing for survival is pure joy whether you like chaining or not.

Yeah, that's exactly why its my second favorite after Dangun. The game really captures the feel of not just controlling a creative and deep weapon system, but rather controlling two symbiotic entities working together towards a mutual goal. It has a personality to me that most of Cave's basic shot/focus mechanics don't.Weak Boson wrote:I can see why some people really like it but if the game is about controlling a separate drone from your craft then it's not for me.
