Can't you play the 2010 reboot emulated with mouse & keyboard (or analogue stick) on PC? If you can, that's arguably for the better. Provided it's at least as playable with remote & nunchuck as Eurocoms's earlier Dead Space: Extraction was.

Nah, that's an entirely different game despite the same name. It's like comparing Super Mario 1 to Super Mario 2...

Re: Goldeneye Cancelled XBLA Remaster video leaked
I wonder if GoldenEye: Source is playable on my CPU, or it's been moved to the Source Engine version that no longer supports it.
P.S. Watching that video right now, I don't know how to put it with all due respect for life, but I like those death animations better than most (!) that I've seen in games to date. In fact, only Project I.G.I. (the first one) did those this convincingly (better than ragdoll, no matter how technically sophisticated). "Look! No strings!"
Don't get me wrong, I'm tired of violence in games (main reason why I mostly play racers and Sky Odyssey these days). It's just that those look like living beings giving up the ghost. It's the willing suspension of disbelief (some other games did some of it for me, but not in depicting death).

Re: Goldeneye Cancelled XBLA Remaster video leaked
It's a shame. I recently played through Goldeneye and The World is Not Enough on my PC. It was great as with the custom mapping I could set it up for proper twin-stick controls. I know it originally had that option using two pads, but this made it much simpler.
What we really need is a remake/update of Nightfire and/or TWiNE. Those two games, both developed by Eurocom, are arguably better than Goldeneye. Except for the story, Nightfire definitely is.

Re: Goldeneye Cancelled XBLA Remaster video leaked
At the time I was surprised how well the Goldeneye remake was kept secret - there were mere months between announcement and release.
Still I'm glad we got a new game rather than a re-released old one with a minor facelift.

Re: Goldeneye Cancelled XBLA Remaster video leaked
It's a damn shame this never released, it looks about on par with the Perfect Dark remaster from around the same time. The original Goldeneye has so much personality compared to modern shooters, and that music.. damn, it's actually music. Rare at their finest if you ask me. The 2010 homage was neat at the time, but in reality it was a bit of a soul-less throwback and it was forgotten by most shortly after release.
Re: Goldeneye Cancelled XBLA Remaster video leaked
I'm happy someone here appreciates the original.... to many (especially in my group of friends) this game is/was revered as one of the best games ever made. To the console it brought what Doom brought to the computer, plus 4 player in-room customizable multiplayer. That changed it all. Yeah the "reboot" was neat, but it was a facelifted call of duty. Cool, but a cash grab. I want the original!!

"For Nintendo, Rare?"
Goldeneye indeed has tons of character, with diverse levels, each with unique objectives and different kinds of interactive things (a big thing back then - no simple key hunts for all levels here), and a unique collection of weapons for almost every level. The tiny motorcycle model inside a cabin in Severnaya is a good example of this - they wanted to have the motorcycle starring in the game, clearly, but ended up finding another way to put this in there. The Four Bonds (i.e., three extra multiplayer characters and some other uses of Connery, Moore, and Dalton, but not Lazenby) is an example of something that they didn't find a way to get into the game - naturally licensing the likenesses would have been expensive - but Rare still thumbed their noses and left the data in the game ROM, so you can still hack 'em back in the game. This was also one of the most remarkable examples of the game packaging not exactly meshing with the game - the manual and the box hold more clues about how the game used to be, which I found mysterious and cool. Then there's the fun stuff in levels, like the famous Facility level's hidden test tubes on top of a vent, and of course the "other side of the vent" which had lots of people attempting to pop-strafe their way over there (one of my classmates spun a most amazing yarn about what was over there).
It's indeed a big shame that this wasn't released, but I think that perhaps Danjaq is actually responsible, as reportedly people didn't like that players could be sneaky and unsporting in Goldeneye.
Goldeneye's death animations include a "slump against the wall" one, but it's rarely seen.
I remember that, something like four or five years after it released, a friend told me his little brother was really good at the game. I never played multiplayer competitively and hadn't touched the game in a while, but pretty soon we were in Egypt locked in one of those famous turning radius battles. A few years later I amazed some younger coworkers with the remote mines. Flying explosions in your face from above! The invisible proximity mines were classic too.
If this had been released, I think I would've certainly gotten it (which is really rare for me - the only console digital titles I've ever bought is the NGII DLC and Perfect Dark XBLA) and I would've made time to go through and get all the cheats again, I'm sure. As it is, I've still got to work on Perfect Dark some more - I think that game's botmatch challenges have me beaten, sadly.

Re: Goldeneye Cancelled XBLA Remaster video leaked
This one time I somehow got a Klobb and Magnum to dual wield in Archives/00Agent, and I marveled at the former doing its endearingly useless *nibblynibblynibbly* tickle attack, only for the latter's unstoppable bolt of death to punch cruelly through flesh, bone and cardboard box alike. D: I never got it to happen again, but I enjoy many other strange and wonderful things like that with my battered ol' GE cart.
Also, I swear I find a slight variation of the "shot a man right up his arsehole" stagger every other replay.

Ever played Sniper Elite? Rebellion shooters get fairly carnal quick.
Not so modern, but I couldn't recommend XIII enough, just NOT for consoles (I read the Canyon level was a bitch to play with a gamepad, whereas on my PC, I enjoyed it immensely). Well, there is split-screen in console versions, if that's your kind of thing...Austin wrote:The original Goldeneye has so much personality compared to modern shooters, and that music.. damn, it's actually music.

That's the "knackers spun around in a knot before exploding" one, IIRC? Think I saw some vids. TBH that stuff gets old to me as does snuff in general, the ol' clinical detachment kicks in quick. GE64 was a more slapstick affair... a more lighthearted depiction of rectal gunshot trauma, if you will! It's the difference between Tom (of & Jerry) getting bopped with a ball-peen, and the paedo hammering from Kill List. (the other way around, in SE & GE64's case!).
I always picture the target shaking his fist admonishingly at the heavens as he hops about with his reddened jacksie.

Like I said, I hardly seek this kind of sensation anymore, but in Rebellion games it seems astonishingly candid, which - powered by various iterations of their Asura engine - makes for pretty unique look & feel of those.

Oh yeah, what I saw was effectively done for sure. Clinical yet distinctive. It seemed to have some morbid sense of humour too, or maybe that was just the editing... or perhaps my own ghoulishness peering through. >_> Kinda reminded me of that last-gen attempt to revamp NFL Blitz (or some other rugball thing) with Mortal Kombat-style X-RAY SPECS for horrific takedowns. I swear I saw a particularly ill-fated teste flat-out explode when a 300lb man landed on it. Oof.

If Nintendo could stop this, why didn't they stop Perfect Dark? If anything Nintendo would have had more say over that.
It's probably Danjaq or licensing problems.

XIII on PC is superb for both single and multi-player modes. I can easily say had this been released on 360, I might have sought a system out. The footage is excellent and the upgrade the window dressing is just right, not to mention an important 60fps during game play. Thankfully, GoldenEye Source is a fair substitute at this point albeit MP only but still if the servers are full its a good blast.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Ever played Sniper Elite? Speaking of Goldeneye Source, if you download and play the new version 5.0 before August 31st, they will tie a special DD44 skin to your account. Try it out here:
http://www.moddb.com/mods/goldeneye-source
I don't see myself doing MP but I will get the skin anyway
Edit: Note that it needs Source SDK 2007, an older version, but still a 3.9GB download.

Seconded. Fucking adored this game, up until a level on a submarine, where one ING a particular door woukd cause it to crash (Xbox). Returned in twice and both replacements had same bug. Shame, as it was a great game.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Ever played Sniper Elite? Rebellion shooters get fairly carnal quick.

Re: Goldeneye Cancelled XBLA Remaster video leaked
About Goldeneye Source, I downloaded it like a week ago, and despite having never played the original (although I did grow up alongside the N64), I'm having a ton of fun with this; right now I'm practically playing nothing besides this and IIDX.
Is it just me, or is the P90 expy absurdly overpowered? The Cougar Magnum is also insanely strong, but the low fire rate and magazine size balances it out.
Also the Klobb seems hilariously shitty to the point where slappers is a viable (and likely better) alternative in CQC.
On another note, License to Kill mode with throwing knifes only is incredibly fun; I'd like to see a server dedicated to LTK with gimmick weapons.

The Ken Lobb is legendarily shitty, a beloved laughingstock. ^__^
Try firing it at a nearby target and marvel at its ability to accurately hit everything but what you're aiming for.
Cutest sound effect ever too. Sounds like a dying fax machine.
Putting a magnum right through someone's fucking chest and watching them go limp as the glass they were in front of explodes... is a ballistic joy not even Brutal DOOM has managed to convey. Mostly because BD does not have glass. >_<
Now that I think of it, the proper analogue for GE64's hard-hitting, satisfying, yet innocent gunplay is Virtua Cop. And lacking the blood spatter & death screams that make Perfect Dark feel so much... (snort)...

I played it back when it was new and don't remember enjoying it very much. However, I didn't spend much time with it at all, maybe 30 minutes. I've been on a OG XBOX collecting kick lately, acquiring lots of games for it. XIII is really cheap so I'll probably get a copy of it and give it a second chance.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Not so modern, but I couldn't recommend XIII enough, just NOT for consoles (I read the Canyon level was a bitch to play with a gamepad, whereas on my PC, I enjoyed it immensely). I seem to have read XIII split-screen drop frames anyway. High resolutions on PC become the artistic direction, too.
