The definition of a collector in my view is someone who buys products to preserve its value. They might even only like 5 paintings out of a collection of 10, but they might buy all 10 because its about ownage. In other words, some rich asshole is investing in a product that they know has a fan base, and the only reason they are buying it is because a profit can be made.

But unlike paintings, things like stamps and videogames will never be used for the purpose they were created for.

Worth of a product is attributed to how possible its likely to be recreated. Since CD's and DVD's are still coming hot off the press, they should not even be considered collectables.

Now if you have the origonal single release of Queens bohemium Rhapsody on gold disc limited edition. That could and is considered a collectable. Know your stuff before collecting. Working your mindset around what you think will be collectable in the future is the risk of the game.

So are you a collector, or just someone who is passionate about the product.. I think the latter is more commonplace, especially at shmups.

Well it's just common sense. You don't buy a car to run it into the ground in 4 months. You don't buy a CD to have it work for a week and start skipping. Nemo hit on the head and contradicted the point with the example he used of people treating things poorly. He said people only care if something works. If you really care about something working properly, why are you going to treat it like shit? If you really care about having a functioning copy of a game, why would you let it get scratched? Wanting shit to work is universal. It has nothing to do with monetary value or resale potential. Stuff I never plan on reselling like my books and DVDs, I still want to work so obviously I care about their condition. Neon's another good example, leaving his games in a shoebox. No collector would do that, he may even be damaging the resale value of some of his games, but it doesn't matter because all the superficial damage doesn't damage the functionality of the games.

A collector will never understand a non-collector, and vice-versa. So just calm down and like who you are, but don't insult those who are different...

Honestly though, collectors can't really break their habits easily, it's who they are in a large way...

Funny you should say that - because that's exactly what I have done recently.

I started collecting about six years ago, running the full gammut of systems until I owned over 1,000 games many of those rare.

However, late last year I sat and looked at my collection and thought "why?" I started collecting because I wanted to play games, but did I really need two copies of Metal Slug on the Neo, or two Radiant Silverguns? Of course not.

So I did the sensible thing and started to sell that which was surplus to requirements: Neo Geo, Mega Drive and SNES all went because I can play all those on my Xbox (and am much more likely to do so, as it is permanently plugged into my TV). Double are going, and games that I will never play again (or in some cases never played in the first place).

Now when I look at my collection (which is still large, including an arcade cab and PCBs) I feel much happier. I could never go back to the way I was before, and I don't really understand why I got that way in the first place.

Lots of people who have no interest in collecting do take care of their personal possessions. It's a fact. I can't believe how far out in left field some people are standing just for the sake of this stupidass argument.

Not to even mention the stupidass argument that relates to the actual topic of this thread. 99p pretty much killed that one IMHO.

I just pulled everything off the shelves and threw them randomly around the room. Then I made sure to prop up all my furnature with random things found around the house. There's a sock hanging from a lamp, and I stuck some pizza in the AC vent.

It feel so good to not be a collector now!
