Sony video monitors RGB/Component differences

Post by Einzelherz »

I'm still trying to sort this out so I hope a crowd sourced method might help.

I have two Sony monitors, and I'm concerning myself with Sony specifically because RGB and Component run on the same input and button. In my 14L5 and my 20L2 they share the same service menu settings as well (SIGnal setting, in this case). My JVC TM-H150CGU seems to also share settings, but I'm not positive on this.

The problem I'm having is that the RGB and Component greyscales are so far apart on my 14L5 that I can't get a common set of color settings that work for both inputs. What I mean is that when I use the 240p test suite (RGB-Dreamcast, v 1.20 / Comp-Wii, v 1.7) and switch back and forth, I have a pretty significant color difference, but only on this one set. The other two have some difference, but it's a couple of percentage points by comparison. The 14L5 has a significant red tint on the black levels in RGB when it's been calibrated for Component and a green tint on the Component when it's calibrated for RGB.

Can anyone here do some similar comparisons using the greyscales on an RGB feed vs. a Component? In my setup everything is the same except for the consoles and the monitors themselves. I'm curious if there's a noticeable difference in the shades of grey and/or any of the color bars.

edit: This is when they were calibrated over component.

I unfortunately dont have the 240p test suite yet BUT as soon as I do I will check on my 14L5 and let you know.

Does anyone else have the ability to run the 240p suite via component and RGB?

I don't know if it's true, but I vaguely remember seeing different settings for YPbPr and RGBs in the service menu, maybe have a look there.

They're all identical. Changing anything on RGB changes the same thing on Component at least regarding their corresponding color settings. There are other settings that affect S-Video and filtering and such as well.

On my L2 and JVC 15" it's not as much of a noticeable difference between RGB and component. I hoped some of you guys could confirm that that's the norm.

I wonder what would even cause my problem. Bad voltage or capacitors?
