Are there PS2 Converters or Region Mods...?
I saw that Arkanoid thred and I wanted to know how I could go about playing Japanese PS2 games on my US Slim PS2 (short of shelling out 150 for a used JP PS2). HALP!

Re: Are there PS2 Converters or Region Mods...?
Fliptop and FreeMcBoot with CogSwap.

Re: Are there PS2 Converters or Region Mods...?
Not sure why or how, but if that doesn't work somehow you could also buy a non-japan fat PS2 and softmod that with freemcboot.
Should be something like 20 bucks max.
Or you could let somebody (who already has a modded system) make you a softmodded memory card that you can use on your slim.

Can the PS2 slim be softmodded

Re: Are there PS2 Converters or Region Mods...?
Yes. Only the latest models are mod-proof. Not sure which.

Funny this thread came up; I have a free mcboot memory card on the way myself.
If your PS2's surface is completely shiny, you can't soft mod it. If it just has a narrow band of shiny surface, you're good.

Ah, yeah I double checked and I meant to say that if half of your ps2's top is shiny, it's too new to be used with free mcboot. Sadly you're out of luck

I'm currently eyeing a Japanese PS2, but $100+ is steep

Dude, just get a refurbished one at Gamestop that's compatible, FreeMcBoot that bitch, and let the good times roll. Most you'll spend is 50 bucks. Or go for the Cadillac Pack and get a phat with adapter and HDD.

You can get a modchip, and get someone to install it.

Re: Are there PS2 Converters or Region Mods...?
I've been eyeing PS2 consoles. Japanese ones are way overpriced and US ones look like they were dragged on a dirt road hahah (seriously, who the hell owned these consoles?!). It also figures that I missed some really good auctions by mere hours. The local gamestops don't have shit... and I don't trust them for anything on-line. But this freemcboot thing looks like what I've been looking for all these years.

Don't install a modchip by yourself for Pete's sake, find someone who's good at the stuff to do it for you. Then, if you're gonna play, say, undub hacks, fan translations and the likes on it, make sure you burn images onto quality disks at a low speed (see the PSX Policenauts fan translation, where - word is around - the openg FMV won't run when played off disks burnt too fast).

I just bought a used silver PS2 slim 70000 series for 42 bucks. I'm goin' the freemcboot route since I don't feel like going through the Magick Swamp ritual, much less perform open heart surgery on a PS2.

Re: Are there PS2 Converters or Region Mods...?
Fuck! I shoulda just bought a Japanese PS2. I was under the impression I'd be able to play Japanese PS2 games with just the freemcboot shit. I don't want to go through the hassle of doing the stupid game swap or "rip" games onto a DVDISOLMNOPimageESR123 bullshit... but it looks like I'd still need to do that. The whole thing is a pain in the arse. Modchip and modchip installation ain't cheep, either. For the cost of that shit, one could buy an import console.
I shoulda just bought a Japanese PS2. Now I've another hunk-o'-junk American PS2 that doesn't do shit for me hahah. I give up on the fucking PS2. I'll probably play skeet shooting with 'em

For what its worth, some of those undubs, fan translations etc. that require a mod of sorts to be played on the real thing are: FFX International Undub (Japanese voices, English captions) and Shadow Tower Abyss fan translation. Admittedly, emulation on PC is a worthwile alternative these days. Back to the real thing, am I glad it was quite easy to build bootable DVD images for Gardius V and Tokyo Road Race (Battle Gear 2), originally pressed on CD-s.

I just wanted to play original discs on original harrware

Re: Are there PS2 Converters or Region Mods...?
Then just get a Japanese PS2 with Original Japanese discs. Don't try to cheap out and play them on a US system, go for the real deal. If you can afford Original Japanese discs, you can afford a Japanese systemBitter Almonds wrote:I just wanted to play original discs on original harrware

Re: Are there PS2 Converters or Region Mods...?
Softmods and converters are usually cheep - that's why I asked
The available PS2 crap is mostly about playing burned games and going through a whole series of rituals on a PC, which I don't have right now (I've a tablet and a phone, at the moment). I was also under the impression PS2s were in the $50 range, not past $100. Anyway, I lost 42 bucks outta this idea. I'm not gonna waste more on it.

Re: Are there PS2 Converters or Region Mods...?
Is the tissue-and-tape mod with the swap magic disk still a legit option? Because it only costed me $13 (at the time-2007)
Sexual Edit: NVM, saw freeboot on Amazon for $13.

Yes, the Magick Swamp is still an option and probably the only way to play original discs besides buying a JP PS2. The freemcboot is for burned discs or play off a HD.

Re: Are there PS2 Converters or Region Mods...?
That amazon link has the proper swap magic for a US region PS2 that is the best option.
But it requires installing 3 metal tabs on the 3 sensors that tell the system whether the lid is open or shut.
2 are easy, the one at the back left that goes in a hole by the spring is tricky, have the system plugged in and on with a disc in it and fiddle with it until the disc stops. The plastic bits that come with swap magic are kinda crap I got the bits from a different source but you can probably manage. Mine has little adhesive pads to hold it in place once you find the sweet spot.
Then you just boot it with the swap magic disc in while the lid is open and then put in your disc and press X twice. You can use a memory card with "free mcboot" installed on it to boot PSX backups and I think it can make the system region free. Swap magic is needed to install free mcboot on the memory card. Just get swap magic it rules.
