Out of interest, what monitor+vgabox combo are you using ptoing?
I love pixels too. It's a shame to see them blurred away by annoying filtering.
ptoing wrote:Depends. I have a 24" widescreen monitor that takes rgb and s-video as well. It upscales very nicely when i play dreamcast via vgabox (the native res is 1920x1200). Then again i love pixels
It can be rotated as well, but only clockwise. For stuff that only rotates counterclock, like ikaruga or doj i just unhinge the monitor and rest it against the stand which works just fine.
I got the official Sega VGA box for dreamcast.
Speaking of vgaboxes, do you have a recommendation for a PS2 and GCN one?

Well, mileage will definitely very, but for the most part, the TV itself does a pretty shitty job of scaling, hence, my comment.
Play any PS2 Cave shooter in proper tate mode through RGB out on a RGB monitor and they look great.
Only DOJ and ESPGaluda. Mushi looks like shit when compared to the PCB. Some stuff will look better than others, but Mushi's pastel backgrounds and retina-burning purple bullets scream low res. I wish the PCB was cheaper.

me too, along with everyone else on the planet.
for example, i was just talking to my grandmother the other day, and she went on and on about how shitty mushi looks on ps2, and i couldn't help but agree. man she loves her shmups. :P

Right on GP. At the last bay area shmupmeet, I had people view a side by side comparison of DDPDOJ and ESPGaluda PS2 ports to real PCBs. Identical picture and play (even the timing).
Since the Mushi PCB is still too expensive I cannot do this comparison with the ps2 port yet. But for the next shmupmeet, I will be able to do a similar side by side comparison with Ibara PCB (which has dropped below the 50000 yen mark on YAJ).

dave_k, which is which?
The one on the left was the PS2 port. Disregard the slight color tone differences, as this was partially due to the low light photo, and that each monitor has its own color/contrast adjustments which were slightly different.
ptoing: wow... that's a sweet combo. Great choice on the 24". Must be sharp enough to cut your fingers on the pixels when running a DC through that vga box.
Isn't that monitor compliant with the Vesa standard for mounting solutions? Might be an idea to try and find an alternate mount/stand. One that rotates both directions.
I'm afraid I can't offer any advise on the PS2 vga box front as I'm still looking for one myself. Those waters are even murkier than with the DC as I believe the PS2 isn't capable of outputting a VGA signal. If that is indeed the case, the signal would have to be converted no? (Correct me if I'm wrong).

Yeh i think there needs to be conversion as far as PS2 goes. atm i am running it through composite which is quite a bit noisy and has more blur than vga T_T. need to get a s-video cable or something at least.
/me investigates for proper stand that can be rotated in both directions
TalkingOctopus wrote:What Mushi sound bugs are you referring to?
The main thing that comes to my mind there is the fact that the music will restart if you pause and unpause the game...again, not game-breaking, but somewhat annoying.
tekneekz wrote:i hope i dont have to wait longer since i preordered a month ago from play-asia. i think they started shipping already, no?
They listed tomorrow as the ship date. I preordered forever ago as well. If you chose economy shipping (as I did), you'll be waiting for at least 2 weeks.
As the storekeeper told me that it would be avaliable today when I asked him to reserve my copy last week. If I got it today, I would post here whether it got true low res mode.
Just hope they also got the 16-page player guide.
*Meow* I am as serious as a cat could possible be. *Meow*

AFAIK the PS2 can only output 15KHz (low-res / CGA) in RGB. To get 31KHz (hi-res / VGA) you need Component YCrCb output, which you could then convert to RGB with a transcoder, eg: http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?catego ... ts_id=4233
And likewise, you need to ensure that the game you are using supports 480p output, which not all of them do. Otherwise your only option is an upscan converter like an XRGB type unit which gets even more expensive.
WHY the PS2 didn't support native VGA is totally beyond me. There would have been bugger all extra cost from a manufacturing standpoint, as hi-res YUV was there already anyway. In that regard, the Dreamcast was the most sensible console to date. Pity it bombed so bad in the mainstream market.

The only noticeable differences on either that I'm aware of is when the slowdown gets really bad. For ESPGaluda -- the first form of the last boss, and make a few other parts in the game. Not sure about DOJ. Then again, these are only noticeable for people that are VERY familiar w/ both versions, as they spent a lot of time emulating the slowdown. Way better than Mushi's slowdown, which makes the game a shitload harder.
Espgaluda 2 will NEED low res by the way. Lots of powdery pastel coloured dust and rolling mist everywhere.
3 words: Respawning purple bullets.

I just checked and my ibara has been shipped via Play-asia! They're shipping the game 2 days earlier than anyone else. I should have it by thursday or friday (I got the EMS shipping for this one).
About VGA (31k RGB) with PS2, there are three requirements:
1. The game itself must support progressive scan. These are few and far between...the only shooter being SnS-II.
2. PS2 system must be set to RGB video output instead of Component in the system menu.
3. A special cable is required. The official one was only released with the PS2 Linux kit. The Blaze VGA cable is another commercial option (released with a disc that could force VGA output in non-VGA supported games).

Actually, one other small point: the PS2 version of ESPGaluda doesn't suffer from the "flicker" that the arcade board suffers from when there's numerous sprites all being drawn on or around the same line (this causes an entire graphic layer to become television snow in the arcade version... you can see it on the super-play DVD when the screen is heavily loaded with goldbars).
If we all agree that Mushi looks like shit on an RGB monitor, and Ibara will most likely be the same, then what is the deal with all the Recap hate in this forum? Just wondering...

It probably has something to do with his ability to turn any thread into a 10+ page endless loop of how every game sucks unless it is true low res RGB.
ps2 mushi might look worse than the arcade but i seen much worse. Gigawing 2 for example. My bowels get upset just by thinking of the graphic abomination that game is.
What exactly is so graphically offensive about Gigawing 2? In my opinion, it is one of the best looking shooters available. The texture quality, vibrant colors, sharp-sharp image...everything. Then again, I'm playing my DC through VGA to Component adapter on a 27" Samsung HD ready
TV. It's probably the second best looking shooter on the DC behind Zero Gunner 2 (which hopefully Under Defeat will destroy). Again, my opinion.

I agree, Giga Wing 2 and Ikuraga as well are great looking shmups and are prime examples of what a polygon based shooter can look like if more time is spent on detailing the polygon textures.
Yahoo! My Ibara soundtrack and PS2 game has shipped from Play-Asia!! I can't wait to check out the arranged mode. You guys are in for a destructive treat with this game.
