Yeah, I used to try joining conversations and stuff, but no one cared and just talked over me. Whenever I asked something about what some people were doing or something, they just said "it's an inside thing". I gave up trying to make friends. I was actually really liked in my chemistry class last year, but I was too afraid to talk to people because I figured that if people believed I had autism, let alone to the point of not knowing what idioms are or being unable to read facial expressions, I thought that I obviously must act like it, so I was afraid I'd sound autistic if I said anything.
Well, high school isn't an easy place to make friends if you're not very social. I remember that it took about 2 years to finally find a crew of friends to chill with, and we connected mostly due to similar interests. It might be a bit easier to find similar interests in college, since you'll usually be placed with more like minded people in your major.

The point I'm trying to make is that finding relationships and talking to people can be difficult at that age, but you've got to keep trying to establish connections, either online or at places outside of school. I find that trying to remain calm and more laidback makes it easier to converse with others, especially in public.

I wasn't going to bother posting in this thread because: I have no real knowledge of atheistgod's circumstances; shmupsfarm is surely never the solution to a problem anyway and; it's not like I bother to post much in the first place. But, generally, this is an important topic and it's been interesting to read people's perspectives. Mine own is that mental health is a very serious business and that the amount of strength and willpower required to overcome certain difficulties is all too often undervalued if not outright dismissed.

Pretty much everyone has to grapple with the same basic questions: who is me? why am I so hopeless at nurturing relationships? could I ever 1cc ultra mode? But the route to answering these isn't the same for everyone, and some unfortunate few walk very winding paths indeed. I hope that mr agod is suffering from no more than the standard allocation of teenage turmoil which is to be resolved in due course. But whatever your problems are, each one is worth the fight: these things can be overcome, one by one, and such struggles will always make you stronger. Be patient, foster a drive to improve yourself, and you may one day - through many battles lost or won - even 1cc ultra mode.

Well, keep a sense of humor about it. My point there, blunt as it perhaps was, is that the whole nonsense of trophies and achievements is just that, nonsense that Microsoft created to have some kind of artificial carrots to keep people playing games if they were otherwise uninteresting. Playing games should be fun and for the experience of doing so, not some kind of measuring contest, and as such why is it important to have captures of end credits or whatever it was you needed to prove you'd played something? They too often don't even have any meaningful connection to the game; unlike say scoring in shooters.

To tie that into the bigger discussion of this thread, I think you're getting yourself down and worrying about things that just aren't that important. I'm an old man 3x+ your age so I'm probably clueless but it also means sometimes I'm not.

And as far as the silly game quotes, my own personal experience is that, if you can find some silly saying that you like or that somehow speaks to the base of whatever your issues might be, remembering it as a sort of mantra can help. I'm sure that sounds stupid but there it is.

There is no law (yet?) that says everyone has to be social. I'd rather be a content hermit than a failed socialite.

There is an infinite variety of ways to pass the time. Time seems like a big deal when you're young. When you're old, you think you've just gone to the bathroom to take a dump and it turns out another year has gone by.

Having just finished off a post diagnosing atheistgod1999 as a chatbot, maybe I can offer a couple items FO REALZ:

You don't have to argue with anybody about your feelings. There's no accounting for the pain a person feels, and it isn't something that can just be shut down by mentally yelling at oneself. At the same time, feels aren't wise advice. They're feelings, and serve a different purpose (and sometimes no useful purpose).

Ponder your feelings if it's helpful, but don't assume this should always be so. Try to be aware if you're getting into a cycle - like spending a lot of time on regrets. You don't have to be like Courage Wolf and regret nothing. Many people seem to be successful when they acknowledge that their feelings are getting in the way of business, and then get perspective - reminding themselves about what is or isn't important when they think about it logically. Another step which helps a lot of people is to distract from those thoughts, or to find something else to do - physical activity, meditating; there's different things to help disrupt bouts of mental self-flagellation.

As the wise G.I. Joe PSAs say, knowing is half the battle. The other half is in acting on that knowledge - and you can; you're not stuck. You know something is disappointing or angering you, so spend some time thinking about what you can actually do to fix that. Realistically this should include planning for your future - that if you're worried about whether you'll be able to eat in 10 years, you might want to spend less time on hobbies, and they'll be less fun with anxiety in the background. Another thing to note is that you have control over yourself, not so much other people, or the world in general. That's not necessarily a bad thing. For untold thousands of years people have been happy enough living in a world with seemingly little to look forward to in terms of big changes, but this does not mean that the glorious past has abandoned us or that things suck. Be mentally flexible to enjoy the world as it changes in small ways and stays the same in others.

You might be able to accomplish a lot more, but insist on being realistic with yourself when deciding what would be a goal for yourself. You can dream, but don't assume those dreams will be (or even should be) reality. Also remind yourself that you don't need to panic over lack of success and fear, or feel guilty for what minor things you've failed in.

Do put a premium on moving quickly to get better, and try as much as you can to be sanguine about the world we live in, because it's the world that you're always going to be in, more or less.

The flip side of The Equalizer's comment on time is that it's always important to make good use of your time. You can do more things more easily when you're young, but you don't die at age 30, and it's still true of a 70 year old compared to a 90 year old. You shouldn't expect you will accomplish more, but you will only find a purpose living today - all you can do for the future is set yourself up well. But you can't force the future to get here more quickly, and you're not well off if you go to the future unprepared.

As someone who had to re-enter the work force on the US side of things, I was shocked at how many people cared what my degree was, despite having 15 years of pretty hard to get experience. I basically had the job people get their masters degree for already, and a few places would not phone screen me. In short, the degree will never hurt... it just may not help either.
Didn't realize you were back in the US. How are things holding up?

I think half the forum just received the "I'll leave you alone" message.

In all honesty kids do dumb shit as a matter of course, and 90s kids even more so, so all this attention seeking is kind of forgivable - but it would be nice if we could just go back to making pussies wet with our video game theorising and let this episode get buried.

Maybe you live in a small town, but aren't there opportunities to start from a clean slate with someone who doesn't hate you?
  • The mentioned gym, where you'll find mostly serious athletes and older people.
  • Introductory courses of anything you are interested in, with people you at least share an interest with. Sports, cooking, art, dancing...
  • Joining various political and quasi-political organizations you care about.
  • More nerdy interests: become one of the socially challenged kids who play collectible card games and board games in game stores in the afternoon, or in clubs in the evening. (A bit dangerous, because you might be rewarded for bad attitudes.)
  • Volunteer work, for example in church initiatives. First aid is a traditional activity for young people, but you might be too young.
  • Forming a team project through classified advertisements and the like: developing a videogame, playing in a rock band, etc.
All these suggestions have something in common: what do you care about? What are you willing to spend your time on?

I refuse to believe that there are no other people your age you have affinity with in your town. They're there, you just haven't met them yet. I grew up in a 5000 souls village and I made a couple of great friends. And I'm recluse as fuck, I'm super picky about who I spend time with. My hometown friends aren't really gamers, but I found other aspects that connected with them. Most of them had musical taste similar to mine. But what they all had, was a state of mind somewhat similar to mine(they don't have to think 100% like you, but if they share some ideologies and your sense of humour, then you should have a blast hanging out with them).

also, when I moved to the big city to study, I searched for VERY SPECIFIC communities (sometime just small groups). I believe this is a real key to meeting like-minded people. You statistically have better odds of finding like-minded people in a group of enthusiast for a hobby that you share. Like, WAY better odds. This makes the experience way more worth it and thus, exciting. Wich will in turn get you pumped up a bit for these meets and in turn give you some energy.

(for me it was mostly musical scenes for which I attended shows and made friends there : but it can be any hobby group, really. Anime clubs, board games, vintage stuff hunting, etc. Just find something that you are extremely passionate about, and go find a club of enthusiast of that hobby and hang out with them. I'm sure there are other nerds at your school :) And check outside your school too. There are clubs who do meets/attend events in a variety of fields.)

God... how hard is that to understand? if you don't want us to think you have a fragile mental health, then don't post about your depression on here.

And by the way we didn't ridiculise the possibility of mental health(wich depression falls under), we were actually undertanding of it and willing to offer some pointers on what to do and who else to go towards. But you had to answer in a rude way of course.
Man you got some nerves. we offer you some legit, sound advice. When we could have very well NOT give any and just laugh at you. Then you go "oh I just hadn't had sleep, never mind", and on top of that you call us retards?
