Doom 3 Total Conversions...

Post by JBC »

 Holy mother of Jesus. I had no idea pc gaming could be so cool.

Have any of you guys played CDoom yet? A.K.A. Doom 3 Classic - it's a total conversion mod for Doom 3 that takes the entire first episode of the original Doom, Knee Deep in the Dead, and presents it to you in shining, solid Doom 3 graphics. The soundtrack has been completely redone in heavy metal guitar and synth. It looks so... official. Like, almost totally official.

I swear to god someone must be making money off of this. There is no way this much work would get put into something entirely for free. If that where true i would still believe in people.

Not only that - but there are more as well. 'In Hell' and 'Last Man Standing' are both well done total conversions.

Last Man Standing even feels like an old Sega game for some reason. I couldn't help but feel like i was playing it on a really suped up Dreamcast - it's just the way the game is presented and how it controls. It's an absolute mindless frag-fest of course - but it feels like an arcade game.

In Hell is crazy ominous... i've only gotten to play a little into this one but it really feels like something that just IS NOT supposed to be free. I cant believe this level of atmosphere is being achieved by what i assume is just fans with source code...

If you haven't tried these yet then you really should. I know there are alot of people out there that don't want to give them the time of day because they aren't official - but trust me when i say you wont regret the few minutes it takes to download them.

Here's a good place to get them i found without having to deal with FilePlanet or a torrent program...

I'm sorry if i'm just boasting about old news to you guys but this is amazing. AMAZING. I'm so glad i got a new pc.

Doom 2 levels own Doom levels (although there were quite a few good levels, definitely). Have they done it with Doom 2? Doom 3 just didn't seem like Doom to me :( They changed it too much. And the music kicked ass in the originals, none of this Quake bullshit. Also, way to rip off Tool :( Just ranting, please ignore :P

Looks pretty nice. I personally prefer the Doom 1 levels to the Doom 2 ones. I'm wondering though, the enemy count must be radically altered, right? Because there's no way the average PC could render the number of onscreen enemies in Doom using the Doom 3 engine. Also, is the enemy AI altered? Because the undead troops, the easiest enemies in Doom, are some of the hardest to deal with in Doom 3.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

There is a Doom 2 mod that has those levels in it - though i must say it is no where near as exciting. They didn't redo the music for it like in Classic Doom and you're character walks too slow like in Doom 3. You have to hold down the sprint key for him to run but you still lose stamina - unlike in CDoom. At the same time the graphics are shite. The programmers didn't incorporate as much detail as the guys who did Cdoom - and it also doesn't even have it's own menu. You have to bring down the console and type in commands to boot it up. It's fairly lackluster.

And yes - they totally ripped off Tool with that riff in Doom 3. But at least they ripped off a cool song instead of some stupid nu-metal bs like Slipknot or something. I mean - it would have been better if it had the kind of metal that Last Man Standing has... which is like a mix of melodic death and black but at least it's not total crap. At least it's not the soundtrack to the whole game either.

The enemy count is not altered at all. The game runs perfectly even when i have many many enemies on screen at once. The AI seems to be fairly exact as well...

The Doom games are some of my favorite FPS ever, the original Doom especially (a lot of its level design holds up TODAY, which is really saying something), so CDoom is a wonderful thing for me.

The polish on it is fantastic, I think it's a better package than the actual Ressurrection of Evil expansion to be honest. That team has a bright future, most of the level designers of modern FPS today are hired from the cream of the crop of the modding community.
