Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Feeding YPbPr into an RGB display results in a purplish tone, right? What about feeding RGsB into a YPbPr display?
Trying to troubleshoot a GroovyMAME rig with an old ATi card and video out adapter. Pinout seems to be correct on the adapter, but I get a very blue image and unplugging Pr makes little to no impact on the overall picture. Feeding Pr to the Pb input does produce a very red picture, which is what makes me think the pinout is correct for the card I'm using (Radeon HD 4800 I believe).
EDIT: Pinout matches the one here at the bottom. Using CRT_EmuDriver v. 1.2b I believe with Catalyst 9.3 (might be super outdated at this point?)

green. Remember those PS2 machines which had a macrovision fix and did output RGB even when switched to YUV ?What about feeding RGsB into a YPbPr display?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Thanks Fudoh, think I'll poke around on the GroovyMAME forums and see if I can get some answers then. TV-Out doesn't seem to be a strong-suit of old GPUs anyway, it looks like there's a chroma delay or something similar causing ghosting.
EDIT: I messed up my GroovyMAME settings and it showed me that the component output of the card seems to only activate for 31kHz signals or higher, so it's just pumping chroma out otherwise (explaining the single color). Lame.

What's a good NTSC capture card?

What is the difference between the BVM-D series and the BVM-A series? Is D Digital and A Analog?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
no, the A series is the successor to the D series. D series BVMs include analogue input boards by default (which you really want), while A series BVMs don't and their add-on analogue input boards are extremely hard to find. What is the difference between the BVM-D series and the BVM-A series? Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Not a question, but a follow through on a question I asked earlier :
After having tested the RetroBit Super Retro Advance, I can finally give my opinion on it :
I like it. It's a nice little piece of kit!
I play it on my HDTV and it looks very nice. This is by far the best composite signal I have ever seen for a videogame console. Colors are close to being accurate and the contrast is good too. Absolutely an enjoyable picture. I never thought I would say this but with this thing, I'm not even longing for an RGB signal. Picture is good enough that I won't bother getting a GameCube and a GBP. Aspect ratio is maintained too on an HDTV and it takes the most screen estate that it can (picture reaches top and bottom of screen, and there are very slim black bars on the left and rightside).
My HDTV does a good job being fed a 240p signal, so it looks quite nice plugged straight in. Having said that, there's still some interpolation. So if I ever get the OSSC, then it will look even tighter as my set will now work with a 480p signal. But yeah, as it is, it looks quite sharp nonetheless and the colors and contrast are nice too, as I've said before.
The sound is very nice in my opinion. I don't really understand the reviews I read that said the sound was okay? Do I have an updated revision of the SRA with better sound or something, because the sound to me is very nice. Not just okay.
On a CRT it looks nice too, but HDTV picture is better. Well, comb filters in HDTVs are superior, so that's no surprise.
Even when passing through a good comb filter (or using a CRT that has a good one), the colors on a CRT are still a good deal less involving than that of an HDTV with the SRA.
If your HDTV handles 240p decently (or better: if you have a lagfree linedoubler), I absolutely recommend to pick up the SRA(if you don't already have a GC + GBP already, that is). Playing GBA games through it on an HDTV is great. (I know I'll have some convincing to do since it's composite, haha. But believe me : it looks good coupled with the advanced comb filters that are in modern sets).

FinalBaton, how do you know it's running in 240p? I assumed it would be 480i.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Question:
I run a Melee stream using an XRGB-Framemeister and an AverMedia C199-B PCIe capture (via HDMI).
I also run a simple Logitech C615 for player cams.
Recently my computer has been exhibiting strange behavior in capturing.
Basically the camera flickers a ton, like pixelates atrociously, and the gameplay framerate becomes incredibly volatile.
You can see my problem in action in the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4j1llahFvw
Further, my computer build is listed in the following PC Part Picker list: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Buzz1337Year/saved/487mP6
I'm wondering if something is wrong with my video driver?
The logitech camera was doing this a while before installing the AverMedia card, and the presence of the capture seems to escalate the problem.
Thanks!

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
@Einzelherz, I tried it on both a CRT and an HDTV. The review I wrote was for the device displayed on an HDTV.
I assumed since it was 240p on the CRT, then it was also 240p on the HDTV (unless the SRA offers 2 display mode (240p for sd 4:3 sets and 480i for Widescreen ED tvs and up), I think this is a safe assumption to make).
On an HDTV, you don't even need RGB for this IMO. It looks absolutely fine as it is.
For play on a CRT though, I agree that RGB would be nice.
A fun little trick : while you get the non-accurate-for-GBA-games 4:3 aspect ratio on a CRT, I can actually get the correct aspect ratio with my NEC crt. That's because it has a very handy image-scaling function (when adjusting image height and width, it doesn't just extend/reduce the visible area : it actually SCALES the image. That means you can give it the aspect ratio that you want. I have never seen this on consumer CRTs nor 480i PVMs. I guess this is a feature reserved to multisync monitors).

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I'm looking at budget-conscious soldering stations/irons- can anyone recommend any of the lower-end brands? I know you really get what you pay for, I can't stress that enough, but I won't be doing much soldering and it's all personal stuff, so I really don't want to spend a ton on something that will see very little use.
Currently looking at this X-Tronic station with good reviews, but I've only ever heard people talk about Hakko and maybe Weller, so I don't know how trustworthy other brands are. The 1-Year warranty does inspire confidence though.

Interesting to see a good review of the device. I assumed it was going to be a piece of garbage. I'll have to take a closer look at it and maybe give it a chance, thank you.FinalBaton wrote:Not a question, but a follow through on a question I asked earlier :

Mine has an average comb filter, nothing special, and the SRA looks good on it. It's really surprising how accurate the colors are. wasn't expecting them to look even close to this.Einzelherz wrote:I dunno. My HDTV has a poor composite filter for old systems.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Soft 15khz question time!
AM2R came out this week and the game runs internally at 320x240. It also allows a 1x output mode so I thought it would be cool to play on a PVM fo funsies.
I bought an Extron 190F a couple of months back and was able to get a good image at 720x480,60hz. It has a couple of issues, mostly what seems like an uneven overscan directly from the input, but that doesn't bother me much.
I can't seem to get my laptop to output a 320x240@15khz signal though. Does a program specifically have to call for this? I'm using the integrated intel GPU because Soft 15khz won't install the resolutions to the Nvidia GPU onboard. I can't seem to find any way to force the monitor out signal to anything that's not the standard computer resolutions. 320x240 shows on the display properties selection screen (sometimes) but it doesn't give a valid signal, so I assume it's still at 31khz.
Anyone have any advice? Ideally down the road I'll have a dedicated computer for this.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
It's possible your laptop can't reach a dot-clock that low, I know the CRT_EmuDriver page talks about certain models of AMD unable to support a low enough dot-clock for all resolutions. Its solution is to apply horizontal scaling to get the dot-clock higher- maybe something odd like 720x240 could work?Einzelherz wrote:Soft 15khz question time!

Ok my question that doesn't deserve a thread:
How come most retro systems used red LEDs for power indicators instead of other colors? Were other colors that much more expensive back in the day? Nowadays everything is blue or white...
