Gridwars (PC clone of Gemomtry Wars)

Post by Danny »

Hello boys and girls!

From the guy who brought us Marble Insanaty...

Gridwars!

For those of us who don't want to spend £300 on a console for a £5 game!

It's a very good clone, I was very impressed with it. For added effect try putting the graphic settings on to "HIGH".

p.s: Sorry if this is in wrong place or if somebody has already covered this!

I hope the Xbox version is better than this. I do love the way the board distorts around the craft and shots, though. Wonder if they took that from planetary gravity.....

It's a nice effort, but it somehow is a bit fiddely regarding control.
I played the 360 on at a friend and it plays TONS better and also looks better :D.

Still nice tho

I like the game very much, but have difficulties getting the controls to work like they should. I´m using the Xbox360-Pad, but with XBCD drivers because those offer better compatibility with racing games. Well, tonight I´m going to switch to official Microsoft drivers again to see whether that works out. If it doesn´t, I´ll have a look at the source code as the game is in Blitzbasic (proving again how powerful that language is).

Yeah you gotta remeber that this programme is doing leaps and bounds and looks a lot more spectactular in the "high" graphics settings although I doubt it will ever be a good as the orignal in terms of everything (gameplay, graphics etc) but at least this is a close second best if you catch my drift.

The guys who made this has also added a few little touches of his own like some extra enimies and power ups so this may turn in to a "knock off" as supposed to a "full on clone" so to speak.

Anyway I'm enjoying this a lot, it's saved me £300 but saying that Dead Rising is comming out soon and that looks BRILLANT!

Nowhere near as good as Geometry Wars
beg to differ, but I´m thinking the opposite. It´s slower than Geometry Wars (well, that may be caused by my slow 1,2ghz PC), but it´s better playable. The score system has real depth to it, and there is a working learning curve implemented much better than in Geometry Wars. One tiny thing I´d like to have changed is enemies shouldn´t spawn within, let´s say 200 pixels of the player ship. And it could make sense to split the score tables a little further, e.g. whether scrolling is switched on or off.

finally managed to enter the default top 10 with 541.000 ... phew, pretty hard! One thing: the music sucks. Maybe not in general, but for this kind of game, it doesn´t fit at all. I put it out and let Winamp run some trancey webradio instead, but a dedicated soundtrack with pumping, energetic techno kind of music would be really nice. Something along the lines of Tempest X3, N2O, Wipeout, you know what I mean.

Concerning strategy:
I remember reading somewhere that it´s advisable to attack powerful enemies first to score, but I doubt whether that´s true for the "black hole" kind of enemies (btw. I love the way they suck in everything, but deflect shots), because enemy number seems to increase more quickly than weapon strength, the player just can´t clear the whole screen anymore as the game progresses. But, letting the black holes live for some time, they actually help the player by sucking in a few enemies. Of course, you need to be very careful about not letting them grow too big, otherwise you just won´t be able to defeat them anymore.

Oh, and better support for the XBCD driver would be very nice for a future release. I switched back to Microsoft drivers to be able to play this, and it´s very much worth it, but since XBCD drivers are better suited for racing games, and the Xbox360 controller is the best racing controller for PC apart from wheels, it would be nice to be able to have both run alongside without having to swap drivers each time.
