Sega Genesis Power Base Converter Audio Questions

Post by DatPhosphorGlow »

In the process of figuring out my cabling.

When the Master System Power Base Converter is used on a Genesis 1 to play Master System games, is audio still available from the headphone jack?

If so, does the mono signal go to just one side or is the mono signal duplicated to both left and right?

Does the Genesis 1 rear Multi AV connector have adequate pins for stereo audio? If so, can I just rewire the Genesis 1 stereo headphone jack to the rear connector and pull stereo audio from the proper pins on my scart cable?

Cheers,

I don't have a power base converter so I can't speak for that, but the a/v connector on the model 1 genesis has all the pins already used.

The audio is entirely generated by the Genesis so it works the same. The PBC is really just a passive converter, there's no real hardware in it aside from a programmable logic array chip.

Yes, the power base converter is simply a passive cartridge converter. You can run SMS games from an Everdrive cartridge and they work just fine on the Mega Drive

And since it's on topic, if you manage to break yours, like I did, you're kind of boned. I thought burned out a capacitor so I replaced them all and got nothing.

I suspect that I let the magic smoke out of the IC :-(

power it up, wait a while, and put your finger on the IC and see if its too hot to touch.

Ive replaced a total of 3 chips in Genesis consoles now, and all of them were too hot to touch when they went bad.

2 audio amps and 1 yamaha chip.

It's hot and if you leave your finger on it it gets uncomfortable. But I don't know what the threshold is. I don't know much about ICs, but are they normally not very hot?
