I'm pretty sure 11 is the tipping point, since I normally run 5 spread, 4 laser, 1 homing. If I accidentally pick up a laser and do 5/5/1 even the first stage boss starts spewing extra crap at me.

I may switch to using 5/3/1 like you; at least then I can absorb an accidental laser pickup and still keep things manageable.

Thanks! I've been sticking with the laser and only collecting power-ups for that, but still collecting them long after reaching the max. Will this still affect the rank a lot? I've been using the 2P ship too, on the assumption that the narrower space between the lasers is making chaining a bit easier. :P

Stage four in Exzeal does the opposite for me, btw. A death there simply sends me to stage five, as if it's just a bonus round. (It's a Salamander-style 'escape' stage which is very satisfying to clear!)

You can keep collecting power-ups for one of the weapons without triggering the rank, as long as the sum of all your displayed power-ups (on the lower side of the screen) does not exceed 11. For instance, once I have my configuration set-up, my spread shot is maxed out and I can safely take any subsequent power-ups as long as I am in this specific transformation.
By the way, rank in Trizeal is not like in Raizing games, here it is purely binary : either you trigger it and patterns become nasty, or you don't and the game is relatively calm.

I see. Something must be wrong on my side, then. Could it be related to me having a pre-release version of the game? Though I should probably keep experimenting with the ships in case that's a variable as well.

@The Coop: One of our team members should be contacting you on Steam shortly and getting you your prize. Apologies for the confusion.

Just squeezed into 3rd place on the st1 table, a week too late. :P

I appreciate the tips re: power-up collection and rank. Have used this knowledge to bolster my maxed-out laser with a homing shot without triggering the rank increase. Dunno if it's helping much but I'm getting closer to the 1CC anyway!
