Anything wrong with buying CRT with built in dvd player?
I am considering picking up a Panasonic TAU CRT that has a built in VHS/DVD player. I was just wondering if the built-in player could affect the picture or something else about the TV down the road if something goes wrong with it?

Not directly, but the cost of the VHS/DVD components could compromise the manufacturing costs put into the actual tube. You would be better off buying a dedicated DVD/VHS Player and keep your 310.Brad251 wrote:I was just wondering if the built-in player could affect the picture or something else about the TV down the road if something goes wrong with it?

Nah, I'm not going to keep my FV310. I have done everything I can do to resolve the issue I have with reds on my set and no amount of grayscale calibrating will fix it; by eye or with a colorimeter. I have spent a dozen hours or more trying to resolve the issue and don't feel like spending any more of my time with it. I have given it more than a fair shot.GeneraLight wrote:You would be better off buying a dedicated DVD/VHS Player and keep your 310.

Panasonic Tau's are supposed to be decent tubes, right?

I'll buy it from you. Is it really that bad?Brad251 wrote:Nah, I'm not going to keep my FV310. Well, how much does it cost? If it's like $10, no big risk. Especially if you can test it first, in case the tube is shot from some housewife leaving it running 18 hours a day or something.

It's $30 which isn't bad but it is also 70 miles away and it is a hassle getting one of my friends to help me move a TV into my basement.BazookaBen wrote:Well, how much does it cost? If it's like $10, no big risk.

Reds don't look terrible but it bothers me enough to not want to keep the TV. Everything else about the picture is pretty much perfect.GeneraLight wrote:I'll buy it from you. Is it really that bad?
I don't want to deal with shipping but I live in the Western NY and would sell you the TV if you are able to pick it up.

I think you got a lemon Brad. Hope you won't hate the FV lineup, it's really top notch (reds and all) when you get one with minimal wear.

I've had great luck with toshibas like toshiba 27af43, ive had mine for 12 years or so. great picture and display 240p with scanlines perfectly. They're a good cheap option ive seen lots on kijiji and craigslist. My go to display for retro gaming.

How do reds look the flat screen Toshibas? I checked out an af44 Toshiba recently that had some pretty bad red push and the picture was way to sharp. It didn't matter how much I adjusted the sharpness control; the sharpness didn't change. I have heard that this issue with the picture being too sharp on flat screen Toshibas is because they have a virtual modulization (makes everything sharper) setting that can't be turned off. Have you experienced this. Can you turn this sharpness setting off?creamygarlicdip wrote:I've had great luck with toshibas like toshiba 27af43, ive had mine for 12 years or so. great picture and display 240p with scanlines perfectly. In my opinion Toshiba sets are not all that great (some people swear by them though). Red push does appears to be a bit strong as a standard, and the "too sharp" thing you describe is the edge enhancement that is permanent and cannot be removed on the AF44 (also the AF43). Some people don't mind this, but some really hate it. I recall seeing on some message board some folks tried to take the edge enhancement out by working on the internal components and I don't recall them having even succeeded in the end. I think the recommended Toshiba sets are supposed to be the AF41~42 as they have the option of turning off the edge enhancement. These are rare though, especially finding one in good condition I would think.Brad251 wrote:How do reds look the flat screen Toshibas? I never noticed any issues with colour imbalance or it being too sharp, i calibrated everything with a thx dvd and i was satisfied with everything. I get a bit of ringing on my ps2 with component but i figured that was a result of the 480i signal. Could be i haven't really noticed just used to it. My other crt is a sony widescreen and it doesn't look as sharp overall but its a weird hiscan tv.Taiyaki wrote:In my opinion Toshiba sets are not all that great (some people swear by them though). Yes some people actually prefer the velocity modulation and sharper graphics. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, just most gamers find that means of picture sharpening a bit objectionable is all. If it works for you then that must be a great set! Generally speaking the AF4x are the best Toshiba for gaming I believe.creamygarlicdip wrote:I never noticed any issues with colour imbalance or it being too sharp, i calibrated everything with a thx dvd and i was satisfied with everything. Sorry, I just don't want to have to deal with shipping. My friend is actually in need of a CRT. I will probably just wind up selling my 310 to him. Do you not come across 310s in your area on Craigslist?GeneraLight wrote:I live in Ohio. I know how hard it is to ship a TV. Especially since I have a 27" Sony KV-27FS120 SD CRT I've tried to sell, which is the same size as your 310. Finding a box big enough for it was impossible, which is why I'm proposing this: You don't need to find a box for it. Just wrap it in several layers of bubble wrap, but still able to pick it up from the bottom.

What about the FV300? Can't remember if you said you already own the FV300. Anyways, I think shipping a CRT with bubble wrap would be a really bad idea and the CRT would likely arrive to you damaged. Bubble wrap wouldn't do much to protect a 100lb CRT and you definitely can't trust the delivery guys handling the TV. You would need to use freight shipping and probably have to put the TV in a wooden crate or something like that. I think this is what others on here do when buying a PVM/BVM off Ebay. They would know more about it. If you are willing to pay to ship a 310, I think you would be better off getting a PVM/BVM and having that shipped to you. Maybe you could browse FV310 listings on Craigslist across the U.S. and see if someone is willing to ship the TV to you.GeneraLight wrote:NeverBrad251 wrote:Do you not come across 310s in your area on Craigslist?
If you can't find an FV310 then I would try looking for a Panasonic or JVC SD flatscreen CRT. You could also go for a Toshiba but you would have to be sure you could turn off the edge enhancement or what is called Scan Velocity Modulation (SVM). On some Toshiba models you can apparently do this and on some you definitely can't (i.e. af44). Even a Trinitron FS100/120 would be decent.
