Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
My region modded Super Famicom has of late started to generate a sort of hum/buzz, even at fairly low volume, that wasn't there to begin with.
What could have caused it? I doubt it's the RGB cable, as the hum/buzz is there when using a SVIDEO cable as well.

Should I bother getting a Wii or should I just play Wii games on my Wii U? Is it 100% accurate like NGC on the Wii?

I think a hacked Wii is a pretty great game system.atheistgod1999 wrote:Should I bother getting a Wii or should I just play Wii games on my Wii U? Is it 100% accurate like NGC on the Wii?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Do you want a Wii only for playing Wii games? Many Wii games, some WiiWare games and all VC Wii games allow you to play with a GameCube Controller, which is not possible on the Wii U due to the lack of GameCube controller ports.atheistgod1999 wrote:Should I bother getting a Wii or should I just play Wii games on my Wii U?
Additionally, its faster to play a Wii/WiiWare/VC game on the Wii than the Wii U due to not having the Wii U Menu or Quick Start Menu in the way and waiting for the system to switch to Wii Mode. The System Settings in Wii Mode have been removed and are governed by the System Settings of the Wii U, which is an inconvenience when switching from 1080p 16x9 to 480p 4:3. Also, the Wii U or Wii Mode cannot output 240p.
HDMI output is the only advantage Wii Mode has over a regular Wii.
Wii games that support the GameCube controller:
Mario Kart Wii
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Muramasa: The Demon Blade
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars
Klonoa (Wii)
Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition
Kirby's Dream Collection: Special Edition
Metal Slug Anthology
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
Bomberman Blast
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3
GoldenEye 007
WiiWare games that support the GameCube controller:
Bomberman Blast
Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth
Cave Story
Chronos Twins DX
Contra ReBirth
Dr. Mario Online Rx
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King
Gradius ReBirth
La-Mulana
Mr. Driller W
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Keep Going! Blazing Adventure Squad, Let's Go! Stormy Adventure Squad, Go For It! Light Adventure Squad
Pokémon Rumble
Retro City Rampage

Yes.Is it 100% accurate like NGC on the Wii?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
It's too bad Nintendo actually made a NGC adapter for Wii U but the only game that ever received any sort of official support for the device was SMB4.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
This question is probably retarded as hell, but can CRTs do both horizontal and vertical scanning without having to flip it? Because I'm thinking of getting a supergun and keep reading that people only rotate CRTs because it's not using the whole screen when displaying a vertical-orientation game.

This is dependent on what hardware/software you're connecting it to. Some games allow yoko mode, other don't.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Hey guys
So I recently picked up this PVM-20L5 for $200 on craigslist (which is the cheapest that I've seen it so far). The guy selling it said it was used for security and so it has plenty of hours on it.
1.) When turning it on, you can see some flickering lines before the picture is fully displayed.
2.) When turning it off, you can see what looks like 2 magnetic orbs going up and down across each other.
Here is a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goTeO5WiHOk (the issues are much more pronounced in person)
Just seems concerning to me, as if these are early signs that this PVM doesn't have many hours left on it. Despite these 2 issues, the PVM is great and I've noticed no other issues whatsoever. The picture quality is great and I've adjusted the geometry to be very good.
Also the picture is very dim in the video, this is due to a feature on the SD2SNES that dims the picture when there hasn't been any inputs for 5 minutes or so.
Any input would be greatly appreciated

Personally I've retired my Wii (and non-GBP Gamecube) because Wii U plays all Wii and GC titles well enough for me not to care about the difference. But the drawbacks mentioned are true.atheistgod1999 wrote:Should I bother getting a Wii or should I just play Wii games on my Wii U? Is it 100% accurate like NGC on the Wii?

How do I deal with vertical-orientation games on a supergun?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Then use two screens, have one for hori and one for tate. Besides, if you are really serious about getting a supergun and buying pcbs then rotating a monitor shouldnt be any worry at all, certainly shouldnt be enough to put you off getting a supergun at all.....atheistgod1999 wrote:That's what I was afraid of. Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I didn't see anything that was concerning here. If the picture looks great and everything sounds good then i'd say go for it and get the monitor for what seems to be a good deal now a daysshartqueefa wrote:Hey guys

I'd be thrilled to scoop up a 20L5 for $200, myself..
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I've been seeing so many people getting BVM D24s lately. Where the hell are you people finding them from? I can't find anything on ebay or craigslist.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Hey, I forgot to thank you for this info. Hmm seems I'll need to get another Saturn or wait for that cd security hack card to become a real thing.Shoryukev wrote:I don't know anything about NTSC vs PAL when swapping drives, but I know when I put the universal modchip in my mk2 Saturn it came with a different ribbon cable for the CD drive for mk1 vs mk2. Basically the drive uses a different type of connector with a different number of pins, so the drive probably won't plug-in.Gunstar wrote:Hello cool people, I have a question about the Saturn mk1, I have a Japanese machine with a failed cd unit, can I swap this with my PAL mk2 unit?
It's pretty easy to pop open a Saturn and take a look though, maybe you'll get lucky and have the same connector on both systems for the drive since one is PAL and the other is NTSC

For those who own something like an Everdrive or SD2Snes, can you save a game the normal intended way for games that offer ingame saving, or is it strictly save states?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
My BVM is displaying rolling white lines on the left side of the screen and making a buzzing noise on the left side too. Seems to be working fine otherwise though. It had been on its side for tate games for a while.
Any ideas what could cause this?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Based on the pic, probably from sitting on its side. TVs and monitors aren't designed to be placed on their sides.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Does anybody have any experience with Korean made CBC Chugai monitors? A batch showed up on ebay. Right not it's may not be too bad of a price+shipping for a 20in if it's a good screen. No rgb/component, though. I couldn't find much info outside of video surveillance sites.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I picked up resident evil code veronica x for playstation 2 and have component cables for the ps2.
I was curious about games like code veronica that don't support progressive scan, only 480i
If i play it on my 46" samsung led tv with component cables, does the tv just deinterlace it?
If yes, is there any quality difference between this and if the actual game/system supported 480p?
I ask because otherwise i'll just keep playing it on my 27" crt tv at 480i which ive been doing.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
thx, yah its a bit odd. I tried it on my sony 30" 16:9 crt tv. It has a mode that forces progressive, it looks decent pretty steady image. I think that mode was made for dvd players though since the tv is from that era. I notice ghosting too on both crt tv's, not sure if that's just inherent in a component video cable or my cable is crappy even though i think its an official sony cable, been awhile since ive played something via component cables.cfx wrote:Yes the TV deinterlaces it.creamygarlicdip wrote:I picked up resident evil code veronica x for playstation 2 and have component cables for the ps2.

Yes there is a quality difference between that and actual 480p. How close it is depends on the deinterlacer and whether the game is 30 or 60 fps, among other things. A TV's deinterlace is likely to be video-oriented as well and thus less than ideal for videogames.
psx via s-video actually looks pretty nice with a 240p image on my toshiba 27" with scanlines

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Can anybody recommend an HDMI audio extractor to get SPDIF from an HDMI input? I will need one soon for when Gamecube HDMI boards come out, as my receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs.
Lots of $30 ones on Amazon (that are probably all clones of something else...), but I see that they have a switch to go between 5.1 and 2 channel audio? Doesn't Dolby Digital have flags in the signal that would tell devices that 5.1 channel audio is being output? Kinda seems like the switch wouldn't be necessary or is a poor design choice, but I haven't used one of these before so I may be concerned about nothing...

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Answering my own question, in case anyone finds it helpful.copy wrote:Hopefully an easy question:
Does anyone know the exact specifications for an original NES power LED (i.e. number of lumens, power rating, size, etc.)?
(The reason I ask is that I'm buying a pre-modded RGB NES, and I think this modder puts in blue LEDs by default. I might want to change it to green, or maybe back to original red.)
I bought a few green LEDs of various brightness ratings (mcd): 18, 70, and 140. Out of these three, I found that the 18 mcd one was actually the best match to the brightness of the NES's original red LED. If anything, 18 mcd is perhaps slightly brighter than the stock red.
So, specs to look for:
5mm
~18 mcd
2.2-3V
On a related note, the Dreamcast requires a much brighter LED. I tried one of the 140 mcd ones in a DC, and even that seems a bit too dim for that console (compared to the stock orange). Unfortunately my local Fry's doesn't have anything brighter until the 10,000 mcd range, which seems like it would be far too much, so I'll probably live with the 140 mcd one for now. Some day I might order one around 300-1,000 mcd to try.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I have used a DVDO Edge for that purpose in the past ;)bobrocks95 wrote:Can anybody recommend an HDMI audio extractor to get SPDIF from an HDMI input?

I would guess that they modify the EDID data to indicate either support for 5.1 audio in Dolby Digital and/or DTS format or 2 channel uncompressed PCM only. This would not have any (direct) effect on the output, but instead causes the source to downconvert 5.1 to 2.0 when needed. Since the Gamecube only sends 2 channel PCM in either case, the setting shouldn't matter at all.but I see that they have a switch to go between 5.1 and 2 channel audio? A bit out of my budget haha.Unseen wrote:I have used a DVDO Edge for that purpose in the past
Surely there will be (would be a bit ridiculous if not), but I'll also use it for a PSTV, so it seems like a decent use of $30 to me. Also avoids another hole in the Gamecube.Aren't there any options for an SPDIF output on these boards?
Just kind of wondering if it would mess with the EDID or anything, since it didn't seem necessary. I don't think the PSTV has any kind of surround output either, but maybe.I would guess that they modify the EDID data to indicate either support for 5.1 audio in Dolby Digital and/or DTS format or 2 channel uncompressed PCM only. This would not have any (direct) effect on the output, but instead causes the source to downconvert 5.1 to 2.0 when needed. Since the Gamecube only sends 2 channel PCM in either case, the setting shouldn't matter at all.
So it's likely modifying the EDID sent back to the source saying if the device it's hooked up to supports Dolby Digital/PCM?
