Analogue/8Bitdo wireless SNES receiver announced/released

Post by Guspaz »

As expected, Analogue/8Bitdo have announced a SNES wireless receiver to match their NES receiver:

http://www.analogue.co/pages/8bitdo-x-analogue-snes

It was kind of a no-brainer considering they already released their NES receiver, and the NES and SNES use identical signaling.

As recently as a month ago I was eagerly anticipating this (along with HD Retrovision's component cables). Naturally, just as these needed products begin to arrive, HDTV manufacturers have started to phase out support for 240p even over component. I'm beginning to question the feasibility of keeping retro consoles in my main setup. :(

..oh, yeah - did any shmuppers get a chance to test the original NES ones for quality?

Buying a OSSC is pretty feasible.

Fair enough, but been trying to avoid the need. Really just frustrated with the progressive loss of features that don't need to be dropped.

Hope you enjoy the receivers. I was glad to see the finalized SNES units are quite sleek. If you saw their protos, you know why I had my fingers crossed in that regard.

For some reason, Express shipping was $1 USD more than standard. I got mine literally next day from Hong Kong for less than sending a letter next day to the next state over. Weird...

It works just as well as the NES one. I picked up the SNES controller from 8-bitdo as well. Played through SSFIIT with no issues hitting anything on the d-pad and no lag that I can detect.

Since I ordered it with the NES adapter from Play-Asia I have to wait until August sometime before mine ships :(

Not like hooking up my SNES isn't a PITA until I get my gscartsw anyway.

Reading about this 8Bitdo is apparently planning a N64 controller. If they get the same perfectly replicated controls going they have for the SNES controller plus the same low lag wireless they seem to be achieving... Mmm, it's a good time to be a retro gamer.

Man, they need to do a damn Saturn controller. N64 can stay dead. :P

Mine arrived today, two retro receivers and two SNES30 controllers. It wasn't exactly cheap, $205 CAD for those four items and shipping/tax. Yeah, yeah, scoff at me for saying the Framemeister is expensive when I just basically spent a hundred bucks a pop per wireless controller :P

Initial impression was, they work great, but take too long to pair when you power-on the SNES. No appreciable lag noticeable (although I didn't try to measure it), controllers feel extremely close to the SNES ones (buttons are a bit less mushy than the real deal, dare I say better).

Updated both the SNES30 controllers and the wireless receivers to their respective latest firmwares, and the pairing is now enormously faster. No complaints on that front anymore, big improvement.

TL;DR: These things are great.

Sounding really good indeed. Appreciate the impressions.

Not sure what the CAD exchange situation is, but sorry you had to pay that inflated price.

While I won't get my receivers for a while if anyone's looking for feedback on the controllers then I can confirm what I've read everywhere else too: they're great.

Mine feels better than either of my used SNES controllers.

Ok here is my review.
I received my Sfc30 and retro receiver in just two days direct from Hong Kong to the uk using play Asia. Be careful though, I got massively stung on import tax and charges. Apparently they can declare a lower value on the package but they don't tell you this up front

I paired them up straight out of the box and did feel like there was a slight input lag, I then went and updated the firmware on the controller and the improvement was immediate. Absolutely no detectable lag
The controller itself feels like a Genuine nintendo one but is slightly more textured.
It feels fantastic and the buttons and dpad are just like stock. The main problem I had was that after being so used to my trusty original pads, the clickyness of the face and shoulder buttons felt too new and pronounced. I don't like it so I quickly fixed this by taking apart the new controller and my favourite old one and swapping out the rubber buffers from the dpad, face buttons and two shoulder buttons. Everything is indentical and they were an exact fit with no modding at all. I now have a Bluetooth snes controller that feels like I'm used to and an original snes pad that feels factory new with clickier buttons.

I was extremely excited about the prospect of using my Snes strike adaptor on my Supergun and neo CMVS as snes pads work perfectly with it. Unfortunately the retro receiver sort of works but all the inputs seem to be in the wrong place. I am not sure why it behaves so differently but it must be something to do with the decoder. I could potentially cut some traces on the snes strike and rewire it all in the right way but I'll have to think about that. It's dissapointing because I thought I may have just found an easy way to make a wireless neo geo stick using the internals of a £10 8bitdo zero controller inside the shell.

Here's a pic of the failed attempt. It powers and pairs up fine but the inputs are all over the place and unplayableImage

Any questions just ask

If you can solder, open your SNES to NG adapter and place a 10k (or down to 4.7k) resistor across the strobe line and ground. (On the controller side). If that doesn't work try data and ground. You could try it on the clock and ground too. Or even multiple ones.

You could do this in the receiver instead of you want.

Basically the receiver expects pull down resistors to be in the console, but your adapter neglected to include them as they are already in official controllers.

Make sure you update the firmware on the SNES wireless receiver to the latest beta version, as they fixed some compatibility issues that were causing problems in a bunch of games like Super Mario World and Super Mario Allstars: the latest beta firmware fixes that.

I can report that the SNES30 and SNES wireless receiver work correctly on the GameCube via the RaphNet adapter.

Great to hear! I noticed the pairing lag as well. Will be sure to update.

EDIT - can't find the firmware either. Could anyone assist?

Ahhh... I just registered on the forum a few hours ago...

I have a FC30, SFC30, and SNES30. The SFC/SNES versions are much better as an all-around retro contoller. the NES/FC models are too cramped for the number of buttons and I find the shoulder buttons very hard to use.

I am waiting on deliver of my SNES receivers and my NES receivers are on back order, so I can't comment on them, but the controllers are very nice quality and very comparable to the originals. As others have said, the buttons are a bit more "clicky," but otherwise are very close.
