You may want to skip to the 55 second mark. Doesn't look like something that couldn't be done on the original DS, but it's 2D, and sprite-based. Let's hope it's at least as good as Generations. Bonus: His arms aren't blue anymore!
A dedicated gameplay video has been released as well. Skip forward to 1:09 for the new zone Studiopolis. Looks like Sega might have actually nailed the controls this time. I'm also really liking what I've heard of the OST so far:

The person behind the recent Sonic CD port and the later mobile versions of Sonic 1 and 2 is involved with it. I haven't played the new iOS/Android Sonic 1 and 2, but the Sonic CD port on iOS and 360 is well done.

Oh cool, I haven't played the mobile versions of Sonic 1 and 2 but the Sonic CD port was pretty good although there were a number of things with regards to the physics that differed from the original. This could actually be as good as it looks then
I'm super stoked. The game looks like it wants to be the 2D Sonic game that never existed on the Saturn, and pretty much every little scrap we've seen so far looks brilliant.
It looks and sounds slick as fuck, and resembles Chaotix and CD a bunch.
pretty much the only thing I'm worried about is stage design quality and ratio of wholly new stages to remixed stages
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
It's weird but the thing I like the most about Sonic Mania is the title screen. I really like the animation of Sonic and the rotating mode 7-style island. Almost wish the whole game was in this style. (Wasn't there some kind of fan game in this vein?)
Disregarding that, I'm guess I'm happy with this although "remixed levels" do worry me slightly. In truth however, I secretly wish for another Sonic Adventure
I'll have to give Generations another go but it didn't really engage me first time I tried it.
The Sonic/Shadow stages in the two Adventure games were, the odd leap of faith rail grind section aside, really fun. So I guess it's not impossible this could be good.
I do think Sonic faired better ditching the speed gimmick entirely and going out and out platformer in the first two 8 bit games (Chaos is well presented but insultingly easy). Even a great sections of the 16 bit games must be played patiently, with the slightest bit of speed ending in you going faster than the screen can scroll... straight into enemies or spikes. Adventure nailed the speed but diluted it with really shitty fishing and treasure hunt sections.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
A physical digital release!?
What kind of bullshit is this. The best looking Sonic game to come out in a long time and we get no physical release!?
Even though the collectors edition looks nice, I'm gonna have to pass.

Yhaa the news was a major buzzkill for me. I'm still mind blown that there is a physical version with no Physical Disc.
Console gaming is really heading the way of the PC now
I was all aboard the whole digital distribution movement a few years ago but now i'm not too hot on them. I know this isnt the thread for that but Sonic games usually get physical releases. The game probably didn't take up much space for a blue ray and they decided to just go full digital.
The game is looking so good too so it would be such a bummer if Sega doesn't give us a physical release. Either way i'm gonna get this on PC and use a Saturn usb pad.
