IT WORKS!!! There is no arching and after about a few seconds the TV turned on. I had to adjust the "focus" on the back of the HVR (i was terrified) but i got it as good as i could get. What do you guys think of the quality of the RCA > BNC?? Now the questions is am i done? Is there anything else i should do with the tv? Do i need to worry about it arching again or from another spot on the HVR? What about XRAYS? lol

I'm currently in the middle of putting up holiday ornaments with my wife so this post is just a quick update. I'm sure i'm going to end up starting a new one about dialing in this monitor. At any rate, thank you everyone who commented and tried to help me. Especially you Ed (arcade-controllers.com), thank you for your quick replies. I checked this thread every night and always had a reply from you. Greatly appreciate that.

i guess the part that is coming in the mail is just going to sit on the shelf until this HVR dies or someone else needs it.

Awesome, I'm sure this thread will save quite a few PVM's in the future.

Total necro, but...

I have a set with a similar issue - a PVM-2730QM (the Australian version of the PVM-2530Q) The HVR has aged badly, and while it's not arcing, one of the the over-voltage lines coming out the back of it drifts from about 6V to about 13V over the first 20mins of operation when cold. When that voltage gets large enough, the set shuts down as it thinks there's something wrong with the HV. There isn't though, as i have another identical set, and swapping out the HVR fixes the problem. I've swapped out a lot of other bits and pieces to make sure, and it's definitely the HVR.

So.... how do I go about finding or making one? In theory I could add a resistor at around 20K from the over-voltage line to ground, and keep the set running. This seems to bleed charge at a rate that keeps the voltage level. I can do the job with my multimeter, but it bleeds a trifle too fast. But this would remove the over-voltage protection. Fine for testing, but I'm not comfortable doing it long term. Any chance i could build and pot one? Does anyone know what's inside one of these?

Patastinky, would you be willing to part with the backup item you bought from ValleyTV, for a fee, of course? The price from the other guys has gone up to $99 USD, and I just don't have that to risk right now. Did that part work for you, did you ever test it? (ValleyTV's email bounces for me? Anyone else getting that?)

Parts that would definitely suit:
Sony Part # 1-230-712-21 (& -22, or best of all -23)

Any ideas?

As a precautionary measure I went ahead and pulled the trigger on http://vtvparts.com/obsolete/viewitem.php?productid=618 it's not the exact HVR for my unit, but the shop, as well as members on the board said that it's close enough that it might work. For $16 shipped i'm willing to take the risk. I saved a ton of money going through that guy rather than this guy > $79.99 . http://www.technotronic-dimensions.com/Products3.html

Hey! I'm sure someone will chime in and help you out. Chances are you will be able to fix the issue you have as there are so many knowledgeable people on this forum. If you need the HVR that I bought from VTVParts let me know and we can work something out with shipping. I actually called him and left a message, i believe his email also bounced back for me as well. http://www.vtvparts.com/Contact%20Us.htm his number is listed on his site.

I'm in Australia, may have to get creative about times to call :)

Yeah, I'm not sure what I'm going to be able to do about the faulty part. I don't know what's inside the block. I might just have to measure the working one i have and try to make something that will do roughly the same thing. But damn, any voltage divider like that that i could make is going to be huge and complicated, and i wouldn't be able to test it until it was in place and impossible to modify :(

The offer to sell me your replacement is much appreciated. We'll see if I end up needing it. Such a shame to let one of these sets go to waste though, they're really amazing.

Sure thing man. Hang in there and best of luck to you. I'm pretty easy to get a hold of on Twitter as well @SEEtheREPLAY

If you lived closer I'd sell ya the unit I have. I picked up a smaller PVM and much rather use the smaller one. Fits nicely next to my PC

So I managed to track down a correct part in Uruguay, of all places. It's in transit as I write, and damned if it didn't cost me the Earth. Here's hoping it doesn't get lost along the way.

Hopefully I won't need to buy your backup substitute part, Patastinky, but I'll let you know :)
