Wouldn't you need to redraw everything at a higher resolution to account for non-square pixels?Guspaz wrote: That's a 3D console, and can't be compared to a 2D sprite-and-tile based console. The NES has a defined number of tiles on the screen, and each tile is a defined number of pixels in size. So are the sprites. Drawing them at a non-native resolution doesn't make any sense.

I thought GameCube controllers were painted? Usually you want your parts to be as smooth as possible so that you don't have to use as much mold release as it slows down production.atheistgod1999 wrote:Well, that sucks.Einzelherz wrote:The hundreds of molds they used back then are long since disposed of.
So is that why the new NGC controllers intended for Smash 4 are matte?

If it was just the silver (the one I have is) that were painted then it's just due to the difficulty or inability to shoot plastic that color. My metallic pink gameboys are painted and I think my Dsi XL and 3DS XL are as well.cfx wrote:
Only silver ones were painted. And likely those limited gold ones or whatever. And to my knowledge they were all textured matte.
I've never known controllers to be smooth in general presumably because at least a fine texture or matte finish makes them easier to hold or have a better feel. The few like Saturn that went with a shiny finish for style still had the edges and bottom textured.
Painting them is the stupidest idea ever for something you hold all the time since the paint wears off and then they look awful.
And silver was all the rage in the early Zeroes.

Not if you take proper care of them and only play with clean hands. I like the textured matte finish of the platinum GameCube controllers. Makes them easier to grip.cfx wrote:Painting them is the stupidest idea ever for something you hold all the time since the paint wears off and then they look awful.

Really? Are we only allowed to set the controllers down on felt, and only put them in a drawer if we wrap them in a linen?GeneraLight wrote:Not if you take proper care of them and only play with clean hands.cfx wrote:Painting them is the stupidest idea ever for something you hold all the time since the paint wears off and then they look awful.
I've taken very good care of my platinum GC controllers but they've all lost paint on the back where the come into contact with whatever surface you're putting them down on. So really, long term, it's not a very good design. Nintendo didn't really care what the controllers would look like in 5 years though.

It sounds like your sweat is highly corrosive. Not really though.cfx wrote:Indeed. I'm as anal as they come, and there is something in sweat/skin oil/whatever that just dissolves paint over time for me. That's right. But you know, I just don't take proper care of my stuff, and I'm a disgusting filthy human who sweats. Ewww.![]()

My ultimate 30 game list for NES would be, without too much thinking:
Castlevania 1 2 3
DOUBLE DRAGON 1 2 3
Dragon Warrior 1 2 3
MEGA MAN 1 2 3
NINJA GAIDEN 1 2 3
Super Mario Bros.™ 1 2 3

FINAL FANTASY®
Kid Icarus™
Kirby’s Adventure™
Punch-Out!! ™ Featuring MIKE TYSON
StarTropics™
Contra
SUPER C™
Metroid™
Wizards and Warriors
Cobra Triangle
Life Force
Also, how cool would it be to include Mega Man 9 or 10 on this thing?!! Missed opportunity!

You'd take Excitebike over Faxanadu? Really? I think Willow would have to be in my list in there somewhere too.

Well, like I said, quick off the top of my head. I do love Faxanadu, but it didnt come to mind at the time I posted. Excitebike is just a classic that many remember as kids as one of their first Nintendo games. If I had time to really think about it, some changes could be made, but I was just thinking of mostly mainstream titles most folks might recall. Fax is a bit niche/hardcore by comparison. Id rather swap Startropics for Faxanadu and keep Excitebike. That would be better.
Overall I think my list would still cover most bases of your average Nintendo player throughout its lifespan.

You've got Castlevania 2 (AKA "the bad one"), but no Zelda games. So I think there are some issues with your list.

It will be interesting to see if this gets released in Japan as a Famicom Classic with a different (localized) list of games...
Taken apart the games, I think a mini Famicom would look gorgeous.

More than that, since it's HDMI, it would be a zero-effort import. No region locking because the games are built-in, no video issues because it's NTSC, no power issues because Japan uses 110v.

So, this is happening... http://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2016/07/25/987741/
Hot on the heels of Nintendo’s announcement of its Classic Mini retro console, Sega is getting into the nostalgia game with a couple of new toys of its own.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of its popular Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, the company is reviving its Mega Drive brand in the form of a two-player home console, as well as a portable gaming system. The products are manufactured by Chinese firm At Games, which has previously released a slew of retro consoles.
The console supports original Mega Drive cartridges, comes with two wireless controllers and plugs into your TV; the portable system features a 3.2-inch display and includes a rechargeable battery with a USB charger.
What’s especially neat is that both systems come with 80 games built in, including Sega classics like Sonic, Mortal Kombat, Golden Axe and Comix Zone. That means you can start playing as soon as you power them on. You can also load additional game ROMs on an SD cards and enjoy them on the portable console.

Pretty sad, really. It's like Sega isn't even trying anymore.

That Sega AtGames thing seems to be the same thing they've been selling for years, just with the 25th logo slapped on? It's a composite-only console, no modern outputs.

The ATGames consoles are horrible. The two sound sources are not clocked correctly, and end up out of tune with one another.

Close enough. Point is, it'll work fine, and they use the same sockets as North America (albeit unpolarized and without a ground pin).bobrocks95 wrote:I thought Japan was 100V and US was 120V?Guspaz wrote:More than that, since it's HDMI, it would be a zero-effort import. Personally speaking I wouldn't trust a 20% overvoltage, but for a lot of systems they're either multivoltage internally and labeled externally as 100V (Saturn, probably Dreamcast), you can get a US power adapter or use another console's (anything with an external PSU or e.g. using a Genesis 2 power brick on a Famicom), or in this case probably use any USB micro adapter since that's what the NES mini is using for power and presumably it's not outside of the USB spec.

Re: Nintendo releasing mini NES HDMI pre-loaded w/ games!
Hope it feels decent and emulation is good - if this is sorted I kind of think it's a steal.
It's not primarily for people who have a nintendo login, or can actually name games on the nes without being confused whether it was for the nes/snes/gameboy or even 'the sega', it's for people who just want something to plug in and play and get that nintendo buzz.
I'm sure future expansions on virtual console will give 'proper' nintendo device owners a far more diverse selection... hell they'll probably be a more diverse mobile vc selection in the future... But this is more something that looks/feels like that old nes, cleaned up for today's tv and small enough to hide away if needed.
Perfect world? There'd have been a wifi and vc store version. Real world; that would bump the price, they'd be patches, logins, button configs, different controllers etc. etc. As it is: no need to get me a watch/clothes/some game I don't really want - get me that nes for a nice christmas gift and we'll play some sitting side by side. Save me from cluedo or whatever.
Shit I'll probably just buy it to prove that there's paying interest in any old games... if nothing else I'm sure some people on here who aren't particular wii (u)/nx/whatever inclined could think of it as a fair rom tax
Next year sell me a snes one.

Re: Nintendo releasing mini NES HDMI pre-loaded w/ games!
Hi all, as mentioned earlier in this thread I have pre-ordered mine and can't wait. I'm a European gamer but always import as I can't stand the slowness and borders of 50Hz PAL games. I sold my PAL PS1 from back in the day and replaced it with a US model, I equally sold my 50Hz childhood NES with some nice boxed games a couple of years back and somewhat regret not having a NES. Sadly with the prices of getting an RGB modded US console and the games imported I want to quit while ahead.
So I really hope Nintendo release this NES Mini with the NTSC 60Hz games, I'm going to return it it comes with the 50Hz versions and try and source the NTSC version. Could it be since Super C is listed on the UK Nintendo site rather than the EU version we might get lucky over here?

Speaking of 60Hz on the NES: If (and I hope so) the NES Classic will be 60Hz in PAL countries as well, this means that the included Mario Bros will be either be the old version or the very first release of the tuned Mario Bros in 60Hz. Nintendo re-released Mario Bros here in Europa in the early 90s optimized to run at original speeds in 50Hz and featuring the new overhauled controls from Kaettekita Mario Bros (which takes the game to a whole new level). While I find the old version borderline unplayable the newer version is one of my favorite NES classics to date.

If the controls are different than the US version, then it isn't really Super Mario Bros. The controls in that game have been ingrained into American & Japanese gamers for decades now.Fudoh wrote:Speaking of 60Hz on the NES: If (and I hope so) the NES Classic will be 60Hz in PAL countries as well, this means that the included Mario Bros will be either be the old version or the very first release of the tuned Mario Bros in 60Hz.
