Golgo 13 - the arcade game
I've played this on mame shortly.
Anyone has ever played it on a real arcade? How does the game work on arcade? I know you can look through a scope (It shows on the "how to play" section), but how does that work? On mame you press a button to "zoom in", and other to shoot.
I got really curious to play that game in an arcade, it looks like its a lot of fun. Obviously playing with mouse it's very easy, I could get past nearly all stages without problem, but then I got stuck in the horse racing level, as I have no idea of what I am supposed to do there (The japanese instructions arent very helpful either)
While I highly doubt, was this game released in a home system? (The arcade version seems to run in an PSX-based hardware).
And does anyone recommend me another game with the same theme? (You have to snipe people) - Even if it plays a little different... on PSX, Saturn or PC ... ?

There's also 'Sniper Elite' for PC and, I think PS2 -- this one's a bit more traditional, you have to walk around like a normal FPS and find good spots before you start sniping. But yeah, IIRC the Golgo 13 arcade game is basically identical to Silent Scope, even if you don't get to play as such an awesome badass in SS.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

Hmm. no DC and no X-Box for me.
But I do know there is a Silent Scope cab in a mall not very far of my house. Everytime I went there I was with my girlfriend, and I don't like to play games while I am with her (Unless she's playing together
)
I also will take a look at this "Sniper ELite" though now I want to get my hands on a modern Prince of Persia game,

Yeah the rifle is better to remove the scope part from. It can be used as "pump action" shotgun type lightgun for House of the Dead III.
The XBox release is called Silent Scope Complete. It's somewhat uncommon but any amount of looking at all will let you find it, probably even used in a Gamestop for like $10. It has a port of the original and Silent Scope 2, the gun is sold seperately and they were never bundled together.
The gun is worth it if you get Silent Scope Complete and are willing to get good with it (though don't expect the kick to be anything like the arcade rifle). SSComplete has Silent Scope, Silent Scope EX, Silent Scope 2: Dark Silhouette, and Silent Scope 3 (the only way to get SS3 in the US). So if you love the games and have an XBox, you can't really go wrong.
Sniper Elite is one of the most underrated games ever made. Cooperative Sniper Elite play is very, VERY intense and fun. You can either triangulate so that you have your partner and the mission target in view at all times, and vice versa from your partner, so that you're like half a mile away from each other and covering each other/eyeing the objective at the same time or you can have one person crawling through bombed out buildings with the binoculars working as your spotter.
Textures are okay but the animations are awesome, plus you have to get creative when your ammunition is running low. Intentionally peg an enemy in the leg so one of his friend comes out from cover, have one player distract and enemy sniper from a distance while another gets the drop on him with a knife etc. It's unbelievable.
Single player is nerve wracking in a very good way.
Only flaw is that sometimes enemy automatic fire is way too accurate from a distance and sometimes the enemies take a pretty ridiculous amount of damage before dropping.
Sniper Elite was made by Rebellion, they did the Jaguar and first PC Alien vs. Predator games as well as that Judge Dredd game (which was a fun diversion on the PC when played cooperatively, a buggy atrocity on the consoles).
The game itself came out on the XBox, PS2, and PC. After updating the 360 it will play on that also. Personally I've only played it on XBox, though I'd assume the PC version would fix the texture issues via resolution/texture depth/whatever other options and mods exist. Odd engine they came up with for the game, the camoflauged character models actually work due to the color pallete, and the sound design is fantastic. Nice weather effects too (and you do have to follow the direction of the wind if you want to make accurage long range shots).

Ok, I'm sold for Snipe Elite. I'll look for the PC version.
Does the PC version also have the cooperative mode? I am a sucker for cooperative games, and I have a couple of friend to play with
I am looking for more info on it anyway
Could you also tell me if the game coms in DVD or CD-ROM media? I have no DVD-rom drive yet for my PC....
Getting back on Golgo 13... how does the scope actually work on a real arcade? Do you have the main screen, and the scope really "zooms in" on screen, or is it like showing a different screen on the scope ?

I don't really know anything for sure about the PC version, but I would assume coop is still in there, might want to check some reviews first.
In the arcade games, the rifle has a screen where the "scope" is that has a seperate display. There's also a dipswitch setting that lets you view the zoomed in screen in a small corner of the main game screen picture in picture style. To play the arcade games successfully one would need to look at the main arcade screen to get the general location of a target, then use the scope to make an actual shot (though there are retarded actiony sections in some levels where you're walking through a house or whatever blasting people that are just a few feet away from you).

That reminds me, there were a few games that worked with the Superscope on the SNES back in the day...dunno which ones...
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Bazooka Blitzkrieg
Metal Combat: Falcon's Revenge (Battle Clash 2 basically)
Operation Thunderbolt
Super-Scope-6 cartridge (this had six games under it, three action and three puzzle)
Terminator 2: The Arcade Game
Tinstar
X-Zone
Yoshi's Safari
I believe it's used for some sort of bonus game access in The Hunt for Red October, Lamborghini American Challenge and a few other titles.
I played one Golgo 13 arcade game in Japan a few years ago. Eventhough I hated the game, I loved the way it captures the idea of the whole Golgo thing: It seemed that I got just ONE shot, so it better hit. Well in first level (a forest, I think) I hit the target right between the eyes, but in the second level or mission I missed and it was instant Game Over
Money well spent? Maybe not, but I got to be G13 for a while at least.
I'm not at all quite sure how it worked technically. I think it was the exact same method as in Silent Scope (except there were no signs indicating the direction of the target) , so you can glance quickly at the main screen to approximately locate the target, and then adjust aim with the scope. Or I maybe remembering everything wrong.
Hmm.. There seem to be three of these Golgo scope games, and at least one other arcade game. I think the one I played was part 3. Nice to know it's emulated, I can try that shot again now.

Yeah, in the one emulated in MAME, you can choose what stage you want to play, and from what I got, you have a "life bar". When you hit your target, depending of how well you shot him, you can get some extra energy or lose energy... the energy starts on 100% - if you hit your target in the middle of his eyes, for example you get +30%, if you hit him in, in the head, but nearly miss it, you get +5%. If you hit him in the arm, you lose 20%, etc. If you compeletely miss your target, you lose 80%.
This way, you will for certain play at least 2 levels. I am not sure if the above is 100% correct, but that's what I understood. Everything is in japanese, so it's hard to understand some stuff

Well, playing with mouse is really easy.
How did you get past the horse racing level? I shot in the back of the horse like it shows in the briefing, but the mission always failed.
The 4 targets level you say is the one where you have to find out who is the guy with the weapon, or the one where the targets pop up one after the other?
