Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
À propos farming games, the other day I suddenly felt urge to unseal Rune Factory Frontier out of my backlog for I miss countryside (actually, I had an opportunity to spend some of these days out there for real, but shit's complicated and so I've chosen not to), but my "no starting ANOTHER jRPG before at least one's out of the system" policy stands fim. Instead, I'm steadily making progress in Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, which - for shame - is too easy to play it WRONG, so when it gets endearing, it may well be many hours into one's first playthrough...

It is Tetsujin 27, and it does. He has a cool design, shame that he sucks to use.Ed Oscuro wrote:Hey, the first enemy robot looks like Duke Togo. That game looks like nothing I've seen, that's new. EDF devs too!
Yeah, devs of EDF and Robot Alchemy Drive. Not always the best framerate, but always a fun game.

Wikipedia calls it Robot Alchemic Drive, but my, does the PS2 library keep giving (I don't recall seeing this one namedropped before). Sounds bonkers.
Mech boxing match in I-Ninja, anyone? Never finished that game myself, but have always intended too. Even its real-language voiced dialogues didn't grate (as they tend to in "kids' games"). One of those Starforce-protected titles I'm not done with.

Yes, it is actually Alchemic Drive. RAD and Tetsujin share the same concept of a giant robot by remote control, an ideia Sandlot has been doing since the PSX with Remote Control Dandy (followed by Remote Control Dandy SF for PS2). Still, Tetsujin 28-Go went for another direction, and its in my book the best one.

War for the Overworld
I got this for deep discount at Humble Store and it'll remain on sale for a couple more days.
This is Dungeon Keeper 3 with the details changed just barely enough to avoid a lawsuit. They brought back the narrator's voice actor. The interface is identical to DK2, plus a couple bells and whistles. The monster roster is practically the same as the old one, but a little expanded and better balanced.
The most noticeable change is that this game is aimed at multiplayer and moves at a breakneck pace compared to the previous games. The aesthetic is a little less comedic and nastier than the original two. Research now produces points that you spend on a three-branched research tree. You have all sorts of new behavioral controls like flags you can plant to stop your imps from trying to claim certain passageways. It's Dungeon Keeper 2, just a liiiitle bit better.
My only complaint is the developers for some reason are really stingy with releasing patches to their DRM-free customers.

Completed Serious Sam 3 at Serious difficulty
The weapon balance is more solid this time around, and the new melee grab is a nice risk/reward mechanic which doesn't get in the way at all.
The newer enemies are drek for the most part, and hitscan enemies in Serious Sam should fuck right off. Yet here they're introduced by the dozen.
SS3's graphics nail the photorealistic style better than most contemporary games, which is most likely a result of the brilliant weather and lighting effects in the desert heat of Egypt. Anyone who's been in a Mediterranean country will see what I'm talking about.
Encounter design overall is alright, though some sections tend to drag out for too long and the dark temple sections inhabited by annoying SPACE MONKEYS are no fun.
Overall, it's alright, but a slight bit worse than TFE/TSE as a result of the first half taking way too long to get serious

Nah, I've seen some vids come up on YouTube as recommended watches but not seen them.
I've been waiting for Watermelon to get off its arse and release ProjectY... but it looks dead in the water from the sheer lack of communication that's come out of them about development progress and release date.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Nearing endgame on Wings of Vi Mortal(Normal) difficulty. Currently up to . There's only 2 other bosses after that one, but I haven't even gotten close on this one yet.
Since I've been stuck a bit, I went back with Darkheim Watch and got all the weapons, a few other secrets, and redid some of the bosses to get the no damage achievements. My global unlocks file is completely screwed up due to getting wiped by computer crashes since I was backing up my saves after the first time it happened and wiped my save but didn't realize I needed to back up the global unlocks also since I thought they were tied to the saves. So I can't even go back and get some of them again because I've picked up the chests with them already this playthrough, or I've already gotten the achievements on this playthrough and can't reunlock them for the stuff (my global has stuff like Grave Danger Flawless, but not the normal Grave Danger, missing some of the early boss unlocks because of the wipe, etc.)
The global unlocks can be fixed by going through the game again on a new file and getting the stuff again there, but that won't happen until I actually beat the game.
as for Steam achievements, I'm currently missing the 6 related to the last 3 bosses( beating them normally and the no damage ones), Bejeweled: Flawless(got close on this a few times), and 2 of the (no damage and the one for only enraging one of them during the battle)

Jeez, I didn't think FFV - four job fiesta would be so hard, with my 2xBerserker, Thief, Bard locked party.
But it's been tough.. like Phantasy Star 2 but less fun. =S I've had to pull some real bullshit to get thru certain bosses.
Also Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. I've racked up a ridiculous time, done all the village/single player quests except Deviljho which kills me in 2 hits and is a real bastard. I think I'm very underequipped, but keep trying it and getting mad anyway haha.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Yes that one's way harder than any of the other village quests, it's closer in difficulty to the later high-rank quests than the low-rank quests that the other village quests parallel. I once managed to kill the Deviljho but got killed by the two monsters following it (and probably would have run out of time if I had survived).Blinge wrote:Also Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. Just finished Resident Evil: Revelations on Steam. The game was better than RE 5 and 6, which I also finished. Awesome setting, some genuinely creepy setpieces (Mayday) and one of the best final bosses I've seen. Can't believe it's a port from a portable game

Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg (for GameCube) on the Wii. My tolerance to this genre games trampled by the Super Mario Galaxy fiasco, I was badly deprived of sleep too. And yet! Even though the stage I played hadn't done anything truly amazing, its presentation was just what doctor ordered. Think Samba de Amigo.

Not the best engineering to grace the 'Cube, and PC port is less than brilliant still, but both largely do their job.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Finished my second playthrough of Wings of Vi. Also on Mortal difficulty. Ended up with 439 deaths this time instead of several thousands of deaths. I had less deaths that entire run than I did on just the final boss on my first run
.
Got Savior: Flawless too, even though I didn't deserve it. I managed to get rid of all the boss's health without getting hit which triggered the achievement then got hit by an orb soon after. I'll gladly take it though instead of redoing the fight.
Just need to do no damage of, enraging only one of them on that boss, and no damage to have all the steam achievements. Need to redo some of the no damages in order to unscrew up my Globals file, but that's not too big a deal right now.
May need to check vids of how much easier those bosses are on Angel than on Mortal. It may be worth doing an Angel(Easy) run if it makes the no damage a lot easier.
Really enjoy this game, it is so good. I probably will never play it with the modifier where you die with one hit though, would make it too frustrating for me. I don't feel ready for Demon Mode yet because of the higher distance between saves, but I do want to try out the harder Demon Mode bosses sometime, so I'll probably play it someday.

Interesting, I have Wings of Vi on my wishlist, didn't know it was this good, thought I want to buy Momodora first as my next 2d platformer...
I'm now juggling between RE: Revelations Raid Mode and....
Tomb Raider: Legend. Defeated Japan and Ghana level, nice bosses. I like this game when it does puzzle and platform segments instead of dumb shooting.

Finished Tomb Raider Legend... Fun 8 hour game... I wish I had unlocked more outfits... Now to Underworld
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Finished up Thief 2 a while back. The last three levels...not the most satisfying conclusion to a game series I've seen. There is some clever stuff, and the idea of "casing the joint" is an interesting idea, but padding out the mission count immediately before the final mission was simply a bad choice. The last mission was just bad, as well. That said, I can't let it overshadow the lots of good stuff in the game, but I was hearing Karras and combat beast stomping for the rest of the day I beat it.
Moved on to Thief: Deadly Shadows, and it's so dark it's giving me headaches. Some weird strafe movement and crashes too - it didn't play well with G-SYNC and the Sneaky Upgrade fixes for uncapped framerate; it actually crashed the game and, apparently, my monitor, so hard that I had to shut off power to my computer and monitor to get the monitor power button to respond! Moving to 100Hz locked on everything fixed all that, and allowed me to pick locks, but I still get occasional crashes and Garrett glides now and then.

The guy with the infinite plasma staff spam, and then the guy with the...well, the whatever? Man, I didn't enjoy those at all. I guess I shouldn't harp on it though. Are you liking Raid mode over the RE6 Mercs mode? I admit, I don't know how popular each is, but I'm more a Revelations 2 raid guy over Rev 1 raid. Rev 1 raid seemed to be way too long and, honestly, the level / encounter design seemed quite poor to me. Still soaked a few hours into it. Of course, you do get a bit more mileage if you're on RE.net.Leandro wrote:Tomb Raider: Legend. Defeated Japan and Ghana level, nice bosses.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Now that you mentioned RE6 Merc mode, I called up a friend and teamed up for one stage of Mercs just to see how it is. He was quite mad since we ended up running out of time with 148 enemies killed..Ed Oscuro wrote:The guy with the infinite plasma staff spam, and then the guy with the...well, the whatever? Honestly I've not tried this mode seriously before because I was burned out of RE6 after finishing all that single player campaign. I actually forgot how to use the herbs.
I am playing Revelations Raid just to unlock Jessica's outfits, I agree that the missions are long and boring, I've only played about 9 stages though. I assume it's extra boring since I've no one to play with. lol

Like Tetsujin, its a very fun game with unique gameplay and no need to understand the text. Any gameplay footage will give you an idea. You're a photographer walking on rails to shot on cool things happening on the scenario, triggering events and all. Think a 2D Pokemon Snap with pop culture references. Hard, by the way.

Finished getting all the achievements for Wings of Vi.
So let's try out one of Solgryn's other games. And now I'm at the end of world 4 in I Wanna be the Boshy. I was a bit over 400 deaths after finishing World 3. I'm now around 1600 since I died so much on the VVVVVV world of it, most of that being the part that's a copy of Doing Things the Hard Way/Veni Vidi Vici . Well it has been a very long time since I had done that part in VVVVVV and it feels harder here due to the difference in movement. Gravitron had me worried, but I got through it pretty quickly. No checkpoints in the gravitron like there are in VVVVVV, so I expected to be stuck on it for a while or possibly not even clear it, but got it in under 10 tries. Gravitron was way easier to no death here, and that was the part of VVVVVV that made me say that I was never attempting No Death Mode unless I learn the glitched route.
Haven't attempted the boss of World 4 yet.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Been making rapid progress in Mashed: Fully Loaded singleplayer on PC. Having overcome the difficulty spike Chase Fugitive Special posed (there seemed to be no other way than actually learning how to drive well). It's a shame that Time Trail is glitchy on at least one track/event (you steer left when pressing analogue right and vice versa), but if this particular game was technically flawless to crown its core excellence... I don't think it ever happens with products this multiplatform (PC, PS2, Xbox) anymore*. By the way, while Time Trails here don't loop infinitely (another fly in the ointment, albeit fairly meagre one), reselecting them each time is only a chore in case of the most brief events (like at the very beginning where you attack the lap once and that's it) - on PC with its minuscule loading times, that is (I recommend keeping disk image on HDD mounted in virtual drive - works without any shady executable). And yes, it saves the fastest ghost data, so time attacking can get as exhilarating as in Moto Racer or Burnout. Last but not least, accelerate-brake-reverse are analogue on PC if mapped onto analogue buttons (not that it makes a huge difference here).
Have Nintendo to "invent" such vehicular games yet? All the formula needs is some clever branding for it to shower the publisher with handsome rewards (assuming the product will be AT LEAST half as good as Mashed).
Planning to revisit Full Auto 2: Battlelines soon and Captain Claw about now. Last noon Rayman Origins (Wii version) made for my breakfast plaftorm game, for a change from Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg occupying this slot for two days prior to that.
*) Nobody picked up this gauntlet of mine last time I threw it.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I spent two hours writing my opinion on the Shadow Warrior reboot which accidentally got lost in the void, so I managed to muster the minimum motivation the write up some bullet points
-Art direction is great, but there's a lot of reused assets and background themes drag on for too long
-Shockwave is OP, no need to use Flux and Protective Shield at all
-weapons are underpowered until upgraded, whereas just using the sword makes you unable to get high ranks
-upgrade system as a whole is pointless and doesn't add any depth, it's just there because the developers thought it'd serve as a means for progression
-some lead guy must've really liked Borderlands, considering all the samey looking loot crates containing shit for loot everywhere, and the Last Wind mechanic. It'd also explain the direction they're going with for SW2
-new Wang is a dweeb, like Travis Touchdown without the humor, mediocre voice direction makes the old SW lines fall flat
-new Wang is only fun to listen to when talking to other characters like Hoji
-greater demons and bosses are no fun to fight, and are just massive bulletsponges until you get the rocket launcher really late in the game
-the flying demons cant even be hit with your sword (without the inaccurate blade wave), and often the level designer just put a turret for you to deal with them
-the revolver is inaccurate and useless, the SMG just is and looks underpowered in every way, the crossbow is decent, the shotgun could've used a range boost, the flamethrower is shit, the rocket launcher is too clunky, demon hearts are rather pointless, and warlord heads also feel rather clunky to use
-swordplay is actually fun, and so is cutting up demons into pieces
-enemy variety is kinda sucky, only the generic demons end up being fun to fight whereas the shielded enemies are easily killed by knocking them down with shockwave and shooting a charged bolt in their head
-ranking system is rather inconsistent
-most damage you receive is unavoidable because of dashing having no i-frames, the lack of blocking, lots of wind-up frames on most special attacks, and DaS2-style shockwaves for larger enemies
-it's easier to dash around while using your infinitely usable healing ability rather than use the vampirism on your Ki attacks because of how inconsistent the damage on certain enemy attacks can be
-should've focused more on NecroVision-style limited health regeneration and vampirism in order to get your health back, since you sure as hell aren't expected to use medkits in combat and the healing ability spam is almost mandatory
-all golem boss battles are essentially the same, and the Zilla boss battles (SPOILER ALERT: You fight the big bad corporate boss man) are pathetically easy, yet are constantly halted by Zilla teleporting somewhere else for about 15 seconds until he *teleports behind you* repeatedly
-story is surprisingly competent, and you'll probably feel something else but buyer's remorse and boredom during the ending if you were following the story
-music is mediocre and doesn't really stand out
-level design is Painkiller-tier since the enemies aren't really designed around using the environment in one way or another, and also features colored locks you have to unlock by destroying statues of the respective color which the game considers 'old-school' ("Enough of this old-school bullshit")
-encounter design isn't all that special either with the enemy variety being sucky and all
-there's plenty of secrets, but so are invisible walls
-everything in the first chapters is fucking explosive, which often results in shit blowing up in your face since you will be using a sword most of the time
-reboot-wise it builds upon what made SW stand out originally (melee combat, oriental setting) but falls flat everywhere else (gunplay, level design, humor) even though I consider OG Shadow Warrior to be the least best Doom clone/Build shooter
-overall it has some cool swordplay, art direction and story, which is this game's only saving grace from being another Painkiller clone
-Art direction is great, but there's a lot of reused assets and background themes drag on for too long

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I only somewhat agree. The first third and final level of the game are great, the middle 2/3rds are just ugly boring industrial sites.Durandal wrote:-Art direction is great, but there's a lot of reused assets and background themes drag on for too long
Covering the levels with explosives to set off chain reactions was the highlight of the game, to me.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

The second and third bullet points I've pulled in here are examples, I think, of why this game isn't Painkiller-tier. There were some very memorable secrets and encounters in that game. The colored locks are something I don't remember having to fight with in Painkiller; in any case, they aren't welcome. Agreed about the thrown-in "upgrade" system, and high ranks with the sword (although you can get much of the way to high ranks using just the sword, maybe even all the way in some cases, but it's tough).Durandal wrote:-level design is Painkiller-tier since the enemies aren't really designed around using the environment in one way or another, and also features colored locks you have to unlock by destroying statues of the respective color which the game considers 'old-school' ("Enough of this old-school bullshit")
