Issues with Toshiba CRT I CRT I checked out

Post by Brad251 »

I tested out a Toshiba 24af44 CRT that was on Craigslist and didn't pick it up because it had some issues and was wondering what you guys thought was wrong with it. I tested the TV out with Artemio's 240p suite on my Wii using component. First, I was able to properly adjust the brightness with the pluge pattern but had some problems adjusting contrast with the color bars pattern. No matter how high or low adjusted the contrast, I was not really able to distinguish between the white bars at the end of the grayscale ramp in the color bars pattern.

No matter how high or low I adjusted the sharpness control, I could not get a clean transition between black and grey in the sharpness test pattern and the overall image was slightly out of focus; especially with text.

No matter how high or low I adjusted the color control, all the colors looked oversaturated. This set had some pretty strong red push as well. Does anyone know if the red push can be toned down in the service menu on the xxaf44 Toshiba CRT?

The last thing I noticed was that the picture was slightly jittery.

What do you guys think could have been wrong with this set and what would be required to fix it if possible?

Sounds like the same problems I am having. There are more Contrast, Brightness, Color options in the service menu usually called Sub Contrast, Sub Brightness, Sub Color, etc. I had to adjust Sub Brightness as it was still too low. How does the Grid look? Does your TV display a full 320 x240p image? Mine kind of looks like this. It has a flickering line and most of it is cut off. The bottom is also cut off but it's just a hair so that doesn't bother me.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the AF44 and AF43 the models that have the edge enhancement feature set at all times and impossible to remove? Older sets had an setting option to remove it (I think up until the AF42). If I recall correctly gamers avoid those models since edge enhancements are never really complimentary for games.

I'm pretty sure almost any edge enhancement can be disabled from the service menu. I find hard to believe that it can't be turned off.

I didn't wind up getting the set but the grid was fine. The TV actually had very good screen geometry. I didn't know how to enter the service menu when I checked it out so didn't have a chance to test out service menu settings.

On the last sets they removed the options to turn the edge enhancement off. It's a very controversial thing for gamers which is why people going for Toshiba try to get the AF42 or before (not sure the AF42 is the right model, I hope someone can correct me if I'm wrong). Anyone with one of those sets please check! If you don't find an option for the equivalent of Sony's Velocity Modulation (VM enhancement but on Toshiba I recall it having a different name)) then that means it's on by default and can't be removed (even through service menus).
