Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
I've just watched a 4 hours (240mn) cut of Das Boot in French, probably some personal edit since apparently no cut of that lenght was ever made.
Or it's an unlisted local release, dunno.
Maybe one day I'll watch the longest version (close to 5h afaik).
Anyway no need to say with that film everything about submarine movies has been told.

Total Fury
A (free) short RKSS made prior to Turbo Kid. Obviously not as glorious as a full feature film, but still a great showcase of their ability to cleverly mix genres in surprisingly satisfying ways.

Spoiler
Basically this is how all the Hostel movies and their copycats should have ended.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Swiss Army Man (currently in theaters)
Was a little worried several times watching this one. Worried that I'd pissed myself from laughing so hard
This is one of those movies that is hard to believe they made, but if you are the sort of person who can enjoy it, you'll be so happy they did.
A mixture of immaturity, slapstick, fantasy, sentimental, and downright bizarre, they're really isn't anything else quite like it.

Judging by the review scores I found on Wikipedia, I'm guessing Legacy will be your favorite.xxx1993 wrote:Gonna try and watch all four Bourne movies before Jason Bourne comes out.

Murder by Death
If you like the older mystery/detective movies like Charlie Chan and The Thin Man, you'll love this spoof on those. Then again the cast is just packed with comedic actors. The 5 best detectives in the world are invited to a murder mystery at a mansion and it goes on from there. Sidney Wang was my favorite with Twain getting really pissed that he was using such awful and broken english through the entire movie.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
I had a captive audience for my birthday yesterday, and I had never seen it before.
I didn't expect it to be so good! Who would have thought that after the nadir of the Showa-era's Minya (or however you spell it) that I could even like the new Baby Godzilla! Well-paced, plenty of monster fights, and very little down-time... Rodan never looked better, though the way Godzilla won in the end was bullshit! Why would Rodan suddenly decide to switch sides after being anally annihilated by Godzilla at the beginning of the movie? Will humans ever be able to defeat Godzilla?
I have heard multiple times that many fans consider the Heisei series to be more boring than the Showa era, but I feel like the opposite has been true. Or at the very least, there are less boring movies (imo, Biollante, Space Godzilla), in the shorter Heisei series than the long-running Showa stuff. I still haven't touched any of the Millennium movies, but I have a couple and am looking forward to it.

While I have no problem with the first being your fave, I'm kind of surprised by your being let down by the rest, with the exception of "Legacy", which was utterly terrible. I mean, *terrible*. But "Supremacy" and "Ultimatum"? I thought those were just fine.Sinful wrote:The first was my fave. Was let down by the rest.

Yeah, taken as a trilogy, the series seems perfectly fine.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Not so long as they stick with the old movie trope of never retrying a strategy that would have worked but for one detail. Seems to me Mechagodzilla was annihilating Godzilla with the Care Bears belly magic attack before switching to that fucking taser. First of all, the captain should have said, "Dudes, Godzilla just walked through those high voltage cables like it's nothing. Maybe we should hold off on using the taser to finish him off."EmperorIng wrote:Will humans ever be able to defeat Godzilla?
Later, do they go back and say, "Do the exact same thing all over again but without the tasers this time?" No!

Re: Movies you've just watched
Seriously, read the Jason Bourne books. Operation Hong Kong (Swedish title, not sure if that's the international one) would have made a badass movie, I remembered walking into the cinema thinking that was what I was gonna see, but was shocked to see it was nothing like it. It must have been the Supremacy movie.
I saw Divergence and it's sequal yesterday night. I rate them 4/5. i enjoyed them more than the Hunger Games movies. The first was really good, and the second was on par. I hope the third is as good.

I thought there was three Jason Bourne movies, there was a fourth??
Re: Movies you've just watched
There were, and there weren't. "The Bourne Legacy" is a movie about a different Treadstone agent (Bourne's original outfit). It's not totally, or perhaps even the majority of Jeremy Renner's fault that it sucked. And it *did* suck. *HARD*. It's a very poorly-behaved stepchild in the family. Lousy writing, pacing, wrong director, very little use of anything/one familiar...basically everything. I'm not a Renner hater, but this movie is terrible, and having "Bourne" in the title is just nothing but a cash grab, and a dishonest one at that.Leandro wrote:I thought there was three Jason Bourne movies, there was a fourth??
Had they called it "Treadstone" or "Black Briar" or something like that, it would have been more honest. It wouldn't have made it good, no...but it was patently dishonest to put the Bourne moniker on there.

Watched Palio on Netflix. It's about the horserace they have in Siena Italy every July and August.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Did it mention anything about the horses' poor treatment? At least the purpose of the race is not killing horses for the sake of it (unlike corrida).Stevens wrote:Watched Palio on Netflix. It's about the horserace they have in Siena Italy every July and August.
Re: Movies you've just watched
No. It didn't mention it at all.
It covered the race and about how much of the race is actually the game (corruption) that goes on the rest of the year in order to curry favor with the other riders in order to win the race.
It's crooked as fuck and everyone knows it, so it seems fair. Kind of like if every character in a fighting game is broken in some way.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I recall that I saw Bourne Legacy in theaters back when it came out, but don't remember much about it other than the fact that it was really confusing. I felt like I needed to do some reading on a wiki to have some idea what was going on. Then again, I also hadn't seen any of the previous Bourne movies, so that can't have helped.
In other movies I watched recently:
Delerious(1991): ***
One of the later John Candy movies, where he plays a soap opera writer with a crush on the show's star (who the producers and other writers are trying to write out of the show) who finds himself inside his own soap opera after a car accident. After he learns that he has the power to manipulate events in the "show" with his typewriter, he saves the star from the contrived death scenario the writers had come up with to kill the character off, and becomes an obnoxious Mary Sue in an effort to get the character to fall in love with him. It's better than it sounds, and gets downright bizarre toward the end.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I like all three of them, quite honestly. The first one is the first, though, and there's more sympathy for Bourne in it. It's got more eye-opening stuff as a result of being "the first". Whether it's my favorite of the three, I don't quite know.Sinful wrote:Fair enough, but do you think the first one is the best?boagman wrote:While I have no problem with the first being your fave, I'm kind of surprised by your being let down by the rest, with the exception of "Legacy", which was utterly terrible. Watched Armageddon a few days back during a flight. Incredible, was way better than anything I'd have expected out of Michael Bay. Definitely worth watching, probably a 4/5. Surprisingly emotional and twisty. Was expecting the 2h+ runtime to wear thin, but it really didn't.
