SNES Mini flickering line/noise at edge of picture

Post by BuckoA51 »

Hi everyone,

So we've got this RGB Modded SNES Mini, it's been modded with an RGB amp (THS7314) but no extra resistors (we don't put them on unless people specifically ask)

It seems to work fine, except the outside of the image shows a flickering line and some other interference, as can be seen in this video:-

Any ideas what might cause that? Customer claims to have tried various different SCART cables and TVs etc...

I think that may just be a bit of garbage that isn't meant to be seen. Under normal circumstances, playing on a CRT display would hide those artifacts. Other consoles, like the Genesis have similar areas of garbage along the top of the screen, which is normally hidden when playing on a CRT.
AFAIK theres no way to get rid of it

I'm going to have to agree with AndehX, a lot of games have junk data just outside the normal picture area where random things will happen. It was originally hidden in the overscan area of CRTs back in the day, so we never knew it was there. I don't think there is anything wrong with your mod or cables.

The customer in question swears he can't see it on another SNES though, is this just something that affects the Mini?

1-CHIP systems and the mini (which is a 1-chip also) are affected by it on a bunch more games than the regular SNES systems. There's a list somewhere of known compatibility issues with 1-chip systems....I'll try to find it, I know it's documented somewhere. I know on my 1-chip SNES Super Ghouls n Ghosts displays a bunch of random numbers and glitched looking data in the corner of the screen that isn't there with my older SNES. It's just one of the drawbacks to the later hardware revisions. You get a much sharper picture....at the cost of a few things like this.

Is it game specific is the important question here. If it is, it's just regular overscan garbage. If it's not it's something to do with the console.

I can confirm. I see the same artifacts with Star Fox on my 1-CHIPs and mini. Not on the multi chip.

There you go then. It's just overscan garbage. Unfixable unfortunately... short of simply using an earlier revision SNES.

It's a known issue with some games on the 1CHIP revision (which the mini is a part of). It's just a matter of compatibility that Nintendo overlooked.

some video processors can get rid of it (almost any of the DVDO's before the mini and micro) also playing on a 4:3 television/monitor would also probably help.

oh yeah of course theres way around it, but there is no way to stop the SNES from actually outputting it to the TV... Thats what I meant.
