Gym battles, besides being braindead (just tap the screen as fast as you can), seem bugged; most of the time the game either refuses to remove the last sliver of HP from an opponent, or boots me back to the gym summary screen within seconds of starting.

As it is with the amount of content (gen 1 pokemon only, no direct player battling or trading, no random group events/raids as promised in the trailer, etc.), either the game is essentially in a rushed beta state, or the trailer was filled with lies.
first few battles I had buggy encounters, but no issues today.

I think it was in a rushed state and there's supposed to be a bunch of new features rolled out in future updates.

the main point for me has been competing for gyms and obviously trying to find new pokemon. a couple of my buddies out in California have been finding some cool ones that I haven't seen so I'm thinking it's very region based. I finally lost my turnpike gym too :(

It seems people have already started using bluestacks and hex editors to edit stuff, making gym battles impossible to win.
That or rich people have injected their money already on the game.

Anyone who has a Google account and plays this on iOS, you might want to take note of this.

This app is a really shitty idea. Putting Pokemon in people's yards!? Great job. I hope this game gets removed and the servers shut down.

I'll bet $100 that someone's gonna get killed over this app.

Ingress has been around for four years and hasn't managed to destroy the world yet. Pokemon GO is fundamentally the same concept (it even uses Ingress's location data) but with a Pokemon theme which boosted its popularity massively. The effects we've seen so far have by and large been positive, with people getting out and about and bonding over a common interest. Of course some people don't think and as a result get themselves in trouble while using the app, but those types of things happen with anything that becomes popular enough and if that were enough to get the game shut down then we really couldn't have anything nice.

Here's the thing: Pokemon GO! being more popular makes it more likely for something to happen.

Imagine this:

Someone finds a rare pokemon in someone's yard. The person who lives there sees them and either A. kills them for trespassing or being mistaken for a thief or something, OR B. confronts them and tells them to leave, causing the player to kill them because they're that desperate for the Pokemon.

Hey, it could happen.

See my edit above. Cars are popular. Facebook is popular. People have definitely killed each other or themselves over cars or actions taken on Facebook. There are going to be players of Pokemon GO who get in trouble but the same is true of people in general. It's only an issue if the crime or injury rate among players is significantly elevated over the normal rates for the player demographics. Rather than giving in to a fear-mongering, defeatist attitude and using these possibilities as justification to work against and strike down anything popular, it's more worthwhile to see if we can address people's concerns and look out for their well-being by working with the app/service to improve both it and its place in society.

on the walk to work today I took over the sears tower gym for about 4 hours. blue team built it up to 12000 before we lost it and then it was still primarily blue throughout the working hours. I really wish you could track combat stats for your pokemon in the gym.

Image

I've learned quick that it's easy to take over gyms but hard to keep 'em. you have to just hope more of your team shows up throughout the course of the day to defend it unless you're hanging there for awhile.

it's also darwinism at play. you should know better than to wander into aomeone's yard.

I'm sure kids are playing it, and granted it's a sample group from my experience, but all I've bumped into is 20-somethings playing it so far. some random 20-30 year old walking by me started a convo with me about our catches on the way to lunch today before we took different streets. he was one of the water taxi drivers who said that people are able to get on and log their distance for incubation on the water (unlike traveling in cars which speed renders the distance as null) which I found pretty cool. looks like I'll have to take a round trip to navy pier soon ;)

I don't know about you guys but I would not be pleased if somebody put a gym on my property without my permission which caused random strangers to lurk around me at all hours.

We are witnessing the actual birth of the Matrix. Masses of players so absorbed by the game they won't notice the moment they're being physically plugged to the Pokemon Go network.

Seeing how I'm one of the few not playing it, guess I'll have to be Morpheus or something 8)

I know this Dragonite is fake. When I call it out of it's ball I know the Matrix is telling my brain that there is a large beast in front of me that isn't there......but you know what I've learned over all these years? Ignorance is bliss 8)

I'm not playing Pokemon Go, but sign me up for plugging me in so I think it's real LOL

The solution for that scenario is simple: JUST SHUT DOWN THE FUCKING SERVER!

WTF! I have never seen a game make such an impact in terms of seeing sh*tloads of people playing this damn thing.
How has it grown in popularity so fast?

Gyms aren't just randomly placed, you know. They're placed at public places where many people are likely to be. Monuments, public parks, plazas, that sort of thing. From what I've heard, you can't just have anyone place a gym anywhere.

This is literally what every Pokemon fan has dreamt of doing since they were kids. It's really no surprise.

I believe the locations are taken from Niantec's previous game Ingress, which as you stated are generally public locations. They used to have a process where you could submit portals to be reviewed and possibly added to Ingress, but apparently that was taken down last year to "work on processing the backlog and on designing new and more efficient ways to evaluate Portal submissions and edits."

Not only that, the nature of the game requires people to go out which in turn gets the game noticed by others, essentially free advertising. It's a perfect storm of new media mixed with nostalgia unleashed at the perfect time.

Yes and just to the right is Jim "The Hacksaw" Duggan - a bit before your time, but you may have seen him on various WWF VHS tapes from Coliseum Video!
