1.304,200 - IlMrm - Marion - 2-1

Chain - IlMrm - 53 - Marion

While the forum was out of commission, I tried using Tavia. She's an interesting character to use. I have to use her close attack carefully. So far only 1-7 in a bombfest.

Great job Cigs. How fast are the bullets flying in 2-3?

One question: When you guys say 2-x, are you referring to 2nd loop or what?

Thanks.

Yep, the infamous Psikyo second loop. Especially harsh in Gunbird 2.

You know, they actually weren't that bad. I really should have made 2-4 that run since I drew the three loop stages I can do. (anything but USA!) I practice all the random loop stages at 2-3 rank so I'm sort of prepared. The only time you see that rank level is on a one life clear though.

It's pretty amazing how much I can still fuck up in the first round considering how long I've played it.

Also Rob- I've forgotten your coin chain high. Hell, I forgot mine.

Welp, then I'm out. I had hopes that I could at least compete a bit in the Gunbird 2 score ranking... But no, I'm not good enough just yet. :(

To me, the turning point in the game is the stage four boss. That damn blimp/bird combination can make or break your run. I was stuck on him for the longest time. With the help of Triple Lei's replay, it was much easier.

Once you get past the bird and get the extend in stage five or six it really helps too.

I see no reason not to submit a score just because a few of us have completed the first round. We're still missing lots of people.

For those that own the Japanese version, do the three pirates have voice acting during the cutscenes? I am a sucker for voices, and I might pick up the Japanese version.

724,500 - Landshark - Marion - 1-6 (24 coins)

Haven't played in a while. Did a few no-shooting striker 1999 runs and then this score popped out.

Thanks - It's 100k better than my previous best and using a different character (used to use Tavia).

I still need to learn where the gemheads are. Every so often I get one. But this run had 0.

Geez, one yo-yo away from 2-2. Foolishly charged the blinking red England skull in an attempt to yo-yo only to get blasted by the first of three blobs of sprays from its mouth. Didn't post the score since its only slightly higher. I would've posted it if it was 2-2.

It seems the stage that you didn't play from 1-1 to 1-3 will be your 2-1 level. I hope I get the USA level at 1-1 everytime, and England at 2-1(This stage is somewhat manageable).

Yeah, England is the easiest loop stage. The boss is close enough to the first round only faster.

Fun fact: When you first turn on the game USA is always the first stage you play, and the rest of the order for that first play is the same every time.

Finally went to 2-2.

1,341,900 - IlMrm - Marion - 2-2

2-2 was USA and I actually had a bomb. I made sure it rained candies before I went out. Now to work on the single life clear. So close today too.

Cigs: From your videos, you have a healthy supply of bombs left after clearing the loop. Where did you use bombed in the first loop? And very impressive dodging of the 1-6 boss, second from, the second pattern. The only other time I saw that done was in Japan.

Great progress IlMrm, I'm gettin a little nervous.

On a perfect run, I use 2 bombs for the first round. First is midway through six when the second wave of yellow bullet-death pods come in just before the gemhead area. I really can't figure this spot out yet.
Second is at the Stage 7 midboss on a certain attack I haven't nailed down. I still tend to bomb that stage 6 boss pattern sometimes when I don't feel like possibly losing 7 bombs. ;)

I definitely need to SLC the first loop with many bombs left if I want to progress well 2-2 and beyond. But it'll be tough since I bomb so much in the first loop.

It's a very tragic feeling to lose with seven bombs in stock. I don't know how many times it's happened to me when I try to dodge the 1-5 boss' yellow sprays.

That part in 1-6 is an annoying SOB. Even with Marion's homing shots it's tough to take out those pesky things before they shoot the slow bullets that gets all over, thus trapping you for the spinning blue things with their 5/2/1 shots. Bastards. I try cutting back through the bullet swarms and the yellow sprays, but it's tough as hell, so I have to bomb, and probably will continue to bomb.

I am actually having an easy time with the 1-7 midboss. I follow Triple lei's strategy.

I figured out the 1-6 thing. I'll make some screengrabs for how to do it, but I don't know how it'll translate to other characters.

What is Triple Lei's strategy? He bombs in his video and his site is gone.

I have a video of this part but I can't get it just yet.

I also had a game the other night where I was a hair's breath away from 2-4. There was a little verbal abuse there for the first time in a while.

Almost to 2-4, man, that's impressive. That 1-6 part continues to be a pain in the ass. Good thing you got it figured out. Hope it'll benefit Marion too. :)

Triple Lei bombs on the part where 1-7 midboss shoots those two circular rings of oval bullets. Sometimes I have to, if I wind up in a bad spot. Fortunately that's happening less and less. Here's how I deal with him(with Marion):

Going in I have at least two slots filled on the meter. Right when the midboss becomes vulnerable, it's one whack, follow by another that takes out the two bits. Then I move with the boss(if the boss move right, I move right under him, if left, then left) and whack him once more, then slowly move down as the boss shoots the two circular rings of oval bullets. I look for the opening and squeeze through. The first form should be gone, but if not, then I go up for one more whack, which will destroy the boss before he shoots move oval bullets plus the fast yellow ones.

I did finally manage a 1CC of the first loop with Tavia. Boy it was an ugly win. I noticed from your replay your end score after the first loop is about 1.21 million? That is damn good. That is what I normally get with Marion, and her subshots barely misses any drones. When I use Tavia, I miss a lot of drones, etc. I also have a hard time keeping gemheads alive with Tavia. I am very dependent on Marion's subshots taking things out for me.

Edit: The way to defeat the 1-7 midboss first form in more detail(works almost every time).

Anyone have a list of where the gemheads are? How do you activate them. Even after 2 years of "once in a while" playing, I still have no idea how to activate these things.

In the PS2 version the gemhead location is beyond the castle wall, in the circle formation on the ground.

no score contributions from me yet, but just to say i will be a part of this thread in the future (as this game is just perfect for any period of available play-time). i would also like to say that the current scores scare the crap out of me, but i'll try no to let that get me down. :D

Gunbird 2 is hard, but there's things you can do to make it easier. There are many excellent guides and replays out there. For a good read, check out Bernard Doria's guide, and Triple Lei's website(if it is still out there. I remember I saw the link for it right before we switched to the new forum).

Which character do you use? For me, it is important to knock out the mechs quickly, before they shoot their patterns. I like Marion because her yoyo is strong, and her subshots help take out drones, and weaken other stuff. But it's fun to try all the characters, and to find one that fits your style.

Good hunting.

I'm most consistent with Tavia.

With Tavia I can usually take out the level 5 boss without dying or using bombs. With Marion though, I bump her fat ass into his 2nd form sprays that slowly shift to the side.

i tend to play with Tavia (i really like the range of her "mellee" attack) or Morrigan (her sprite helps me determine the hitbox). i almost exceeded 300,000 on 1-3 with a chain of six or seven coins. yay me!

New coin chain for me, sorry Rob.

I chained the first three stages perfectly and made it to 1-5 with 54. Then I got a few more but made a stupid mistake at the boss. Damn!
