Sony A20F1M S-Video troubles.

Post by Kerrigor »

Hi Guys, so I have my BVM, and I just got the BKM-61D which supports S-Video.
Here's what I'm using to get the signal to the monitor;

Master System has scart out, which I plug into this little adaptor, allowing S-Video out.

From there, I have the cable split off, into Luma & Chroma which are plugged into the correct slots of the board, and I have terminator caps on the unused ports.

However when I turned on the Master System and the BVM, all I got were these images;

I know for sure I've got something wrong, probably in the way I'm trying to hook it up to the monitor maybe? I've checked all the settings as best I can, but I'm finding it difficult to find much information, I've followed Sony's guides on how to set it up from years gone past.

But any help from you guys would be appreciated, although I do have to go to work soon, so I might not be able to reply for a little bit!

Thanks in advance!

Are you sure your SCART output is RGB, rather than composite? From the video feed it looks like a composite video image not syncing up correctly. I would try just feeding it a straight composite signal from the master system.

Does that little adapter actually do any sort of signal conversion? From just glancing at the picture, my guess is that those S-video and composite output ports are just tapping straight into the SCART lines, in which case, the Master System doesn't output S-video natively.

This is the cable I ordered from RetroGamingCables https://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/seg ... r%20system If that helps?

And that's the Scart adapter, so no, I'm not sure that it does actually convert the signal, which I'm guessing might be the issue? I have just read a quick guide though, apparently the Mastersystem does natively support S-Video, but you have to mod it I think!

I modded my Master System about 6 months ago for s-video output, it was incredibly easy to do. Same exact mod steps as a genesis model 1 if you google it. I get some mild jailbars with mine, but it is still 10x better than the composite output was. You can always cut one end off an s-video cable and wire it direct to your mod and stick the cable through one of the vent holes in the system if you want to avoid drilling the case

EDIT: this is a suggestion in case there is an issue with your SCART converter box thing.

I have that same adapter. The s-video port on it doesnt actually work.

since your master system is outputting rgb and not s-video.

In which case, I'll definitely give modding it a go, I always planned to mod my Master System 2, so I can knock them out in one go! Thanks for the help!

And ah yes, I made the mistake of thinking it was a converter, not a carry through! Oops!

Thanks for the help all the same guys! (:

No problem! The chip you solder the chroma/luma/etc. to has pretty large pins that are fairly far apart, so soldering to them is a piece of cake.
