Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
well, it's not really hard to adjust the settings blind. (just a bit annoying) because of the joystick like nature of the control buttons. I wrote down arrow combinations, sort of like a secret character code in a fighting game. I can pretty much get the image perfect with that. although when I set it to 31khz+ modes I have to readjust it all over again,
(geez sony, even some of your oldest PVM's have memory recall for settings!)

Again, count your blessings though, it shouldn't work at all! On my Sony monitor I could only get 240p at 120Hz to hit 31kHz horizontal, and it didn't have an OSD anymore either.
PS1 Disc-Based Game ID BIOS patch for MemCard Pro and SD2PSX automatic VMC switching.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I have both the Viewsonic 29GA and a NEC XM29. They both use Toshiba tubes, but the Viewsonic will not do 15kHz over RGB. It will do 15kHz via composite and S-VHS, but not through the VGA / RGB input, lowest it will do is 24kHz. The NEC will happily do RGB @ 15kHz and the XM29Plus model will do higher resolutions than the Viewsonic too.Blair wrote:I've heard that the ViewSonic models actually outperform the NEC in certain situations (and they do have native 15khz inputs) but even though there are listed as 29 inch displays, they only have 27 inches "viewable" (is that the same for the NEC models as well? I've never seen one in person before)
regardless, I probably can't lift anything heavier than what I've already got. (I already pulled something in my back this year hauling heavy electronics for a friend, ouch!)

that looks pretty neat, is that an emulator or original hardware running?
(what do you mean by cheap cable?)
When it comes to vertical shoot em-ups, I also prefer flat CRTs compared to the curved ones. (a lot of the later model Sony Trinitron's I think make awesome tate monitors)

VGA cable for the xbox 360. $7 investment.
I've had the monitor for 15ish years but retired it to the closet about five ago.

oh cool, I always forget that the 360 can output VGA (and I think even the ps3 can)Einzelherz wrote:VGA cable for the xbox 360. $7 investment.

here's a picture of a 20L5 running the Sega Saturn, I really like the way this picture came out.

Still trying to find a 20L5 of my own.

nice,I have the same monitor.Blair wrote:whoa, that does look pretty cool.nissling wrote:Got myself a new lens some weeks ago and tried it out by then, but it wasn't until now that I had a look at some of the CRT pictures I shot.
This one turned out pretty cool. It's actually an RGB modded PC-Engine.

here's a shot of my Sony e400 in 240p mode (the downside of 240p mode with this unit is you can't see monitor settings, so you have to adjust them blind. not entirely sure why Sony designed it that way, but the menu is visible in 24khz mode and higher)
240p is also much brighter (like twice as bright) and sharper with pixel graphics, so I included a 480p picture for comparison. (in the spoiler tags)

Hi,
I was lucky enough to grab myself BVM-20F1E last year, but for some reason never got around to looking at the status page
which I did the other day, to my amazement its only been used for less than 4,000 hours
(As far as I could tell, it was a used as a rental out to studios/film crew, so it probably spent a lot of time sitting around
waiting to be rented out)
Yet the units listed on ebay as "low hours" are in the 30,000 and above range
I was wondering how common it is to find one with this little usage?

Not very common to find one with so few hours on it.

No, I got it in April last year off Craigslist. Also got a BKM-10R, an input card for Composite and S-Video, and a 13.5" PVM with it.FinalBaton wrote:did you just buy this ag1999

BVM-20E1U "Micro" Vertical Shake Help
Hey guys, made a thread but I figure I'd get some more traffic in here. I'm having an issue with a BVM-20E1U (same as BVM-20F1U but with 1000 lines).
I've made a video to help explain the issue I'm having with a BVM-20E1U.
The picture seems to have "micro" shakes vertically.
Camera was placed on a tripod, set to manual focus, and countdown timer to start the recording. The shake you are seeing is not camera shake, except for the last 2 second of video where I need to press the shutter to end the recording.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
The sync isn't pure as it's an unmodified 1CHIP-03 SNES and I'm borrowing a friend's N64 scart cable to test, so I'm assuming it's sync on luma, maybe sync on composite.
The reason I do not think it's a sync issue is that when I connect a composite source to the monitor the shake is still there. Also, when I hook up the exact same setup to my BVM-D14H1U there is no shake. I have a non 1CHIP-03 SNES and CSYNC cables on the way.
Is it possible the non D BVMs are more sensitive with SYNC signals than the newer D series? If so, then why do I get a shake with a composite source on the 20E1U?
Here's the video:

i'd like to know if there is anywhere I can get hold of the mounting brackets to attach the BKM-10R control panel to the bottom of my 20G1E... Cant seem to find any anywhere online

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Is it possible to deinterlace 480i on a 20F1E picture like you can on a consumer Sony?
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I just output to 240p over VGA from my video processors, or from an older Nvidia card. although I believe this monitor's true strength lies in its 1080p output (hopefully I'll be up to take a picture of that when I get a chance).amaradona wrote:

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Thank you Blair!
Just to be sure, we are talking 240p 60hz not 240p 120hz aka frame doubling?

I'd like to know the answer to this too but I'm pretty sure you can't.LDigital wrote:Is it possible to deinterlace 480i on a 20F1E picture like you can on a consumer Sony?
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I don't get this at all. Why would you deinterlace a signal for a monitor which already shows the interlaced signal natively?LDigital wrote:Is it possible to deinterlace 480i on a 20F1E picture like you can on a consumer Sony?
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I think he would like to have 240p rather than 480i.nissling wrote:I don't get this at all. Why would you deinterlace a signal for a monitor which already shows the interlaced signal natively?LDigital wrote:Is it possible to deinterlace 480i on a 20F1E picture like you can on a consumer Sony?
But it does work only for titles which were originally in 240p.
Plus, I am not sure you can use the same trinitron's trick on a bvm.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I managed to get ahold of a BVM-20F1U that is in amazing condition. Cell phone pics are not great but here it is. You have to click and view them full size.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
You guys and your stumbling into fantastic hardware. Only some mild jealousy over here.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I managed to snag this sexy little trio for an absolute bargain on eBay last weekend. The bvm only had 14800 on the clock and the picture and geometry is the best I have ever seen

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I've tested both on it, one of the main issues though is its very picky with 240p signals when it comes to refresh rate so it's not really useful with a multitude of arcade games or anything that outputs a refresh rate under exactly 60hz (a lot of games operate at 59hz or some other strange variant of that) so that's much easier to do with a video processors that can lock the refresh rate.amaradona wrote:Thank you Blair!

it also doesn't seem to properly save picture adjustments in 240p so you have to readjust it every time you turn it back on, so it's extremely fiddly to get working. (that's why I'm working on an alternate solution for it)
240p 120hz has similar problems, but you have to use black frame insertion to get rid of the frame doubling (my PC is barely powerful enough to use that without frame dips).
besides taking a few cool screenshots, I've mostly given up using the 240p feature because of how annoying it is to use. but as I said before 1080p on this monitor is fantastic (both 4:3 and 16:9)
I might have some solutions for you though, what is your main use case for this monitor? (what type of games do you want to play on it, and how you want to play them?)
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I posted these in another thread, but I'll post them here now. since these pics were taken I've improved the image even further, so now it's 100% perfect. (I was unhappy with the darkness of the scanlines, but I added another SLG and that's solved my issue)

For a DVDO setup that's VERY solid 240p you got there!
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
You think its worth picking up a bvm with 60,000 hours on it? Know Sony used to replace the tubes every 30,000 hours.
