Using a Sync Stripper with a PAL Gamecube

Post by jay »

So I recently started installing sync strippers in all of my scart cables for various consoles to use with my Extron Crosspoint, which has worked out fine up until now. Today I decided to install a sync stripper in my Gamecube scart that is wired for sync over composite video (since that is all the PAL Gamecube has available).

I can confirm everything definitely worked before I installed the sync stripper when connecting directly to the PVM. I'm getting no sync while connected to either the Extron or the PVM directly after installing the stripper. I tested it on my n64 and it worked just fine, so it's not an issue with the sync stripper from what I can tell.

Me and my friend talked about it for a bit, and he thinks that I may need to install what is outlined on this page into the cable, specifically this part under the PAL column for Gamecube
220uF Capacitors* in series on R, G & B. If you are going to watch/use the Composite video picture aswell (Scart connection) then you also need to use a 75ohm resistor to ground and 220uF capacitor* in series on Composite Video
Anybody have any ideas on what the problem might be?

The Gamecube is well documented to not work with sync strippers. Mine works if I run it through a scart distribution amplifier first, before it goes through the sync stripper. (I have one sync stripper in my Framemeister scart adapter instead of sync strippers in every scart cable)

Interesting, I never came across that when searching for a solution. Do you have a link to the scart distribution amplifier you have, or an example of one?

I'm gonna try this and see if I get the same result http://www.extron.com/product/product.a ... 300hv#spec

Where exactly was it documented? Did anyone ever determine exactly why?

well I guess "well documented" was an overstatement, but I have read comments from people in the past that the Gamecube just does not like sync strippers. Might have been on here, not entirely sure. A few people have definitely reported similar issues though.

As for why, I have no idea personally, but running my Gamecube through a SCART distribution amplifier before it gets to the sync stripper seems to fix the issue for me.

Received the Extron Distribution amplifier the other day, worked perfectly. I removed the sync stripper that I originally installed in my GC scart cable and installed it on the output end inside of the distribution amplifier. Here's a link to some images of what I did for reference. So as Andeh said, a distribution amplifier (of any sort) should fix the issue. The one I got was this model, cost me about $15 shipped.

Glad it worked for you too. Man $15 is damn good. I had to pay £80 for my SCART DA... that was a painful purchase.

Well yours is also a switch, so that's not awful. This is only being used as a pass through for my gamecube. I paid $65 for my madcatz switch a while ago before switching to an extron crosspoint. Switches aren't cheap.

Shinybow SB-3715 is purely a 4 way distribution amplifier, not a switch, unfortunately :/

Ohh I see. I don't have much experience with the framemeister, does it require a distribution amplifier for all systems? Sucks that it doesn't function as a switch. :(

no no, its not required for anything. I just use it to split my console between my BVM and Framemeister. As you can see from this thread, however, it is required if you want to use a sync stripper with the Gamecube
