Pathologic.

Also the indie tower defense game "Immortal Defense" has that kind of story. It's also a great game for the tower defense genre.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Not sure if I'm reading correctly, backhanded compliment?

Yume Nikki and pretty much any one of its fangames. Regarding fangames, I recommend .flow, Me, and Yume Nikki 3d in particular.

There's also a crapload of stuff on Itch.io if you know where to look. There's way too many to list, so it's probably better to search for yourself.

I probably post more later on, as these kinds of games are my thing.

Likely spoilt by now (technically point & click, too); also, certainly imitated by many a game since, but the original Max Payne caught me by surprise in its time (not so much the story it told as the means of expression applied).
Sometimes I wonder how I would like Little Big Adventure anymore (whether I still have what it takes to "get it").
I have yet to play Zeno Clash, but it sounds like that.

More protecting my own ego, since TD is a fairly maligned and dying subgenre, but I enjoy it.

But yeah, Immortal Defense and Defender's Quest are the two best examples of that genre working.

the talos principle

I initially gave it a chance because jonas kyratzes was listed as a contracted writer on it... and then I was blown away. probably best described as a more philosophical version of portal.

I'd recommend other jonas kyratzes games set in the lands of dream (e.g. "the strange and somewhat sinister tale of the house at desert bridge" and "the sea will claim everything") since they're mindfucky in content, but those are all point and click adventures.
