PS one mini console, best SCART cable?
I was doing some research on SCART cables for the PlayStation and I was a bit confused because there seems to be some conflicting information on what the best type of cable is.
I want to hook up the PS one mini console to my SCART switch (right now I have a super Nintendo and Sega Saturn on my three channel Max view, on my PVM. both cables are wired for C-Sync) and I want to know what the best type of cable is best for that particular model.
I get most of my SCART cables from "retro console accessories" on eBay they seem to say that the best cable for PlayStation's is a SYNC on LUMA but an article on retro RGB seems to indicate that I should get one with a Sync stripper built-in.
which cable should I get?

luma is perfectly fine unless you have a switch (like an Extron matrix) which requires clean sync.

well I do have a SCART switch attached to the PVM (the silver Max view with three inputs) if I use a sync on LUMA cable that should be fine?Fudoh wrote:luma is perfectly fine unless you have a switch (like an Extron matrix) which requires clean sync.
on a side note, I seem to remember the PS One units having slightly worse composite output then the older PSX models, but all of the RGB output should be relatively the same across the PlayStation family, right?
thanks for the help Fudoh!

awesome, i'll order the regular (recommended) cable they make and give it a shot (which reminds me, maybe it's worth springing for the light gun cable, although I don't own any light gun games.... yet)

I'm also using a sync-on-luma cable (although from RGC rather than RCA), and it's working fine on my PVM and with my auto scart switch.
For light-gun games, you can also use the Sony multi-av breakout adapter, part SCPH-1160. It basically goes between the playstation and the video cable, and has RCA jacks for audio and composite video, and it has a multi-av jack to plug your scart cable in. They're not too expensive (looks like $10-20), but also seem to be somewhat rare.

what about light guns for the system? how rare/expensive are they?
having the capability to play them makes me interested in at least trying them (if not collecting them all)

I don't have much specific knowledge about it, but My Life in Gaming's video on the TIme Crisis series covers PS1, PS2, and PS3 lightguns:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nhUsfXkMyg
It covers the three Namco Guncon lightguns. The PS1 Guncon seems to have buy-it-now prices starting at around $10 USD on eBay including the box.

I think I watched that episode but I don't remember them talking about the rarity of the actual guns,
but light gun games are pretty fun as they have a rather low barrier to entry, might be able to get some of my younger family members into classic gaming with that angle, lol

Guncon 1 costs around $10 in box on eBay. They're not rare.

that's good to hear, but it seems like I need more than one type of gun to play all the games available? (guncon, hyper blaster etc.) still a little confused but I'll keep researching.Guspaz wrote:Guncon 1 costs around $10 in box on eBay. They're not rare.

I believe some games only support specific guns. Particularly if they were by Namco or Konami to push their respective guns presumably.

so, if I was going to have two players I would need two of every type of gun? that's annoying.bobrocks95 wrote:I believe some games only support specific guns. Particularly if they were by Namco or Konami to push their respective guns presumably.

This is an at least decently complete list, but basically it all depends on the game and it's on Sony for never releasing an official gun controller which probably would have helped with the segmentation.Blair wrote:so, if I was going to have two players I would need two of every type of gun? that's annoying.bobrocks95 wrote:I believe some games only support specific guns. If you're only playing PS1 games I'm pretty sure only the original Guncon is necessary. Once you get to PS2 era, some of the games require a Guncon 2 and it can't be used on a PS1 as it connects via USB.

yeah, if I go down the rabbit hole i'll probably have to track down at least two of everything *sigh*
I'm still deciding, but I'll probably get the gun compatible cable anyway (when she finally has them back in stock)

As for ps1 lightgun games that do NOT support the Guncon.
Most if not all of these games can simply be patched to work with a guncon. I know, amazing, right?

Re: PS one mini console, best SCART cable?
I think you may have misunderstood the page. I recommend luma and only mention a sync stripper if your switch requires it. If there was something unclear, please let me know and I'll try to update it: http://www.retrorgb.com/playstation.htmlBlair wrote:I get most of my SCART cables from "retro console accessories" on eBay they seem to say that the best cable for PlayStation's is a SYNC on LUMA but an article on retro RGB seems to indicate that I should get one with a Sync stripper built-in.
Also, sorry for not seeing this before...I just saw the thread pop up today.

Re: PS one mini console, best SCART cable?
oh , that's ok. I think I was just a little confused by some of the things on your page and how things were described on the retro-console accessories ebay page (and I did not see any mention of the ps-one mini console on either page). I was not sure if I needed a sync stripper or another type of sync, because I was going to use it with a common-ish scart switch (and maybe sometimes a video processor).
I wanted to get the right cable on the first go. I have the recommended cable now, and it looks great with my PS-one mini console. on my RGB monitor or any of my video processors. can't wait to play some of those 32-bit RPGs I've been meaning to play for years (tales of phantasia).
thanks retrorgb!

I have a retro console accessories lightgun compatible sync on luma cable. it has an Rca jack on it for the lightgun. works great.
