The only good 4chan board is /tg/

Everything else I would gladly consign to the horrors of the warp forever.

I understand that feeling. I once went to this forum called shmups.system11 and got laughed at for saying that there's nothing wrong with considering a game as completed if you used continues, since different opinions are very dangerous!

But seriously, I'm not sure why you would throw yourself into the lions' den when it will always result in you being kicked out for being different until you learn to fit in.

Especially /v/
/v/ in early morning EST hours is hilariously bad. It gets better in the evening, if not particularly good.
nothing gets quite as bad as /g/ though in terms of actually trying to have a conversation -- you can make the attempt on /v/ and even get good replies
for all the shit-talking /g/ does about /v/, you can't really talk about anything interesting there
/g/ is a board that can't manage anything approaching reasonable discussion over the sound of them bitching at each other over consumer shit and programming languages no one actually uses [and the most they've written in them is fizzbuzz].

/tg/ and /m/ are actually pretty good though. People actually talk about things reasonably.
/vr/ too. It's not quite as brilliant, still has its share of shitposting, but I spent ages on it simply because I could actually talk about games.

/vg/ is appalling and I've never seen anything approaching discussion there. I dunno if generals are really a bad idea [/jp/'s generals are the only actual discussion on that board, /vr/'s Doom/classic FPS general is actually great, a handful of /tg/'s generals are okay], but I'm kind of on the fence about them over there.
but I guess all of those I described actually have new content to discuss regularly, unlike the ones on /vg/, so there's actually something to discuss
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

It happened in /d/ , so go figure why they're critical despite everyone has weird fetish inside that.

I can find some good stuff in LEGO General and on Shmupg General and that's it.

No one keeping their fucking game manuals. I want to learn how to play, as well as the plot of, the used games I buy!! I always read the manuals before playing games, and I usually have to print out fucking PDFs because almost everyone was too impatient to read the short manuals before playing their games and throwing them out as a result because they thought they were useless or something. And I have ADHD for fuck's sake.

On the topic of people throwing away game manuals, how about GameStop destroying all packaging and materials for their Nintendo DS used games.
It makes it even worse when you go to a pawnshop or used game store and all they have is the aftermath of GameStop's shread everything but the cart policy.

After watching Final Destination last November, I ended up looking up plane crashes. I know that planes can't explode by themselves IRL, but was still curious. I wasn't frightened by the plane that actually exploded in mid-air on Halloween about a week before I watched it because someone intentionally caused it and put a bomb on it (only scary if it can just happen accidentally), but then only a few days later I read about a plane crashing into an apartment house in Ohio, then a bunch of other plane accidents seemed to happen. I also read about Germanwings, which scared me more than that Russian plane explosion despite also happening intentionally because it was the pilot who did it and not a terrorist.

I actually talked about this with my dad, who's an electrical engineer, in the car yesterday and he said that they're rare and that no one we've ever met has died in a plane crash (I pointed out that my mom was in a chorus with someone whose husband was later in the plane that hit the second tower, though). He said that because planes are actually extremely safe because they do an insane amount of testing on them because of how obviously dangerous the concept is. I'm still scared, though.

He even went on a business trip to Paris a few months ago and after I saw the movie, and he actually first went on a plane from Boston to New York, so he traveled the same route as the plane that exploded in the movie  .

"Magical Sound Shower" is too fast in the Master System port of OutRun. No one on the Internet appears to be aware of this.

Compare:

SMS

Arcade

It plays at the correct speed on a PAL system, though. Oddly enough, while "Passing Breeze" also sounds right on a PAL system, "Splash Wave" does not.

The internet seems largely unaware of the right speed for most SMS games to be honest. Americans are generally confused that games were released for it post-1990 (Americanisation of retro gaming being one of the things that annoys the hell out of me).

Still thanks for the reminder that I need to pick this up as I only played a friend's copy back in the day. Amazing technical achievement for an early SMS game and indeed I don't think any other SMS driving/racing games had hills until Road Rash (way late in the system's life when people had really unlocked the console)!

TransatlanticFoe wrote:(Americanisation of retro gaming being one of the things that annoys the hell out of me).
These days you're maybe ten times as likely to hear about Mario, Sonic, Zelda, Castlevania, or Mega Man on a "retro gaming" site than anything from the Amiga, Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, C64, or MSX. To say nothing of Sega's arcade games, MegaTen, Dragon Quest, Fire Emblem, 90s eroge, anything by Infocom other than Zork, 80s computer RPGs* in general, etc. Japanese action games from the Famicom and 16-bit generations are grossly overrepresented while series like Langrisser and Super Robot Taisen fall to the wayside. The predecessors to today's open-world AAA titles are all but forgotten...

More people need to know about Metal Gear 2.

*And Japanese RPGs, of course. It wasn't until a few months ago that I was able to find a well-written article (two, actually) pointing out the misconceptions I had been seeing over and over.

SMS is definitely a strange case. Japan got the short end of the stick with that system, but it's often assumed that Japan did better because it's a JP made system. More games were released for it in the US than Japan (unless you count SG-1000 games), though EU made out the best. One thing that bugs me is that some of the cheaper EU only SMS games can be bought for under 20 complete from EU sellers BIN, but sell for over 40 in standard US auctions due to ignorance of ebay's worldwide option.

That comic pic has the part that states what the acronym stands for cut off. MODAAK stands for Mental Organism Designed As America's King.

If you want to explode some firecrackers at 10pm or even 11pm on 4th of July weekend, fair enough. I'm not a communist.

But if you stumble home from the bars at 3am and decide you want to spend the next solid hour shooting off firecrackers you're a fucking asshole.

I hope they were drunk enough that somebody blew off a finger or two.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I give them this whole holiday weekend, regardless of the time on the clock. It's The Big One, and it's just one weekend. You injure yourself? Tough break, idiot. But go ahead, noise-wise. It's that time of year.

Ugh. Such a great console and it got crushed here. I knew even as a kid in the late 80's that Sega was doing OK with it in Europe and South America (Thanks GamePro), and I wanted it to do well here too in the worst way.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Even in PAL regions there were less than 300 Master System titles released (many of which were downscaled Megadrive and Game Gear ports), which isn't even half of the Famicom's North American library. Couple that with the relative lack of third-party support and it's easy to see why the system wasn't successful.

What?! This is actually happening. What madness.

And I recall being really pissed when this one popular local used gamestore kept black markering game packages and games. I asked that that shit is so annoying, and they looked at me like I was some weirdo. :P

I was ambushed by some shitty faux-lesbianic 80s bubblegum, and went to blast Judas Priest's "Eat Me Alive" to forget about it. Blocked in my country. Twice. Motherfucker I'll kill you. I'll rip your head off and fuck the gushing stump. Oh wellz torrent the LP mirite Image

It doth crack me up that "Eat Me Alive" got PRMC heat in teh 1980s for its naughty lyrics, then "Some Heads Are Gonna Roll" got blacklisted from radio post 9/11. What a fruity, yet dangerous LP! I think Big Pharma was trying to suppress the feelgood mucho manlove vibes now pounding from my speakers!

It annoys me because of how stupid it makes the person who uses it sound. That, and it often times doesn't make much sense in the first place.

Anyway, did you gys know that people posting their Mugen collection on sites like Itchi.io and Gamejolt was a thing? As someone who used to frequent the Mugen community, I know how easy it is to download stages, characters, and a screenpack, slap them together and call it a "game". It's one thing if you use the Mugen engine as a base for your own creations, that I fully support, but just crapping out what is basically a collection of things other people worked hard on making and posting it under your profile is total crap. It's one thing to do that in a Mugen community (where it isn't held in a high regard either), but on a site primarily for indie developers to post their own work is where I draw the line. I'm sure Mugen isn't the only type of thing that this happens with.

A few of those "downscaled MD ports" came to the US and some are different enough from the MD version to play well in their own right. It's hard to tell which games were GG ports due to GG being very similar to SMS hardware wise (many games give the impression that the GG version is the port). In many cases, SMS faired better due to higher resolution.

Even games with identical graphics like Lucky Dime Caper and Batman Returns have some major differences. Both these games added a life meter. In Lucky Dime Caper's case, it was a poor attempt to make up for the lower GG resolution. In Batman Returns' case, the gameplay was drastically changed so enemies take more hits and the ability to choose from a weak batarang with long range, a balanced batarang, and a stong batarang with low range replaced the power ups of the SMS version.

NES definitely has more games, but SMS still has some nice games that only came to Europe.
