BVM and Speaker Placement
I finally got my 20" BVM and would like to have a nice pair of 2.0 powered speakers to go with it (KRK, M-Audio, Mackie etc.).
I'm hearing things about shielding (lack of) and possible permanent damage to the BVM due to placement, powerful speakers etc. There seems to be no definitive answer to this, I'm just finding random excerpts in threads.
So, can I place a pair of studio monitors next to my 20" BVM? Will it cause any damage and/or interference with the picture? If I can't, how should I go about safely setting up my audio?
Will a sub woofer close by cause damage?

High-end speakers are always shielded, so if you go with Mackies and the such, you should be able to put them close to the BVM
If you go with something of lower range than definitely check if they're shielded first

FinalBaton, yes, going to go with a nice quality pair of speakers, probably KRK or M-Audio.
Can I place them right up against the side of the BVM, or must there be some space?
Should I just place them, check for magnetic interference, if so, move them, degauss and repeat till I get a clean picture?

Re: BVM and Speaker Placement
Some external speakers were attached to CRTs, so we can assume it's safe to put a shielded speaker right against the monitor.
I personnally put them at least a feet away just by precaution.
You can test I guess by turning on the monitor and then getting the speakers closer : a temporary disoloration will show on the screen part that's closer to the speaker, if it's not a shielded one. If this happens then pull the speaker back till you don't see the discolouration spot on the screen anymore, and then pull back even a bit further just to make sure you're safe.
But I'm not sure 100% sure if it's safe to test in that manner. I think having a discolouration for a couple seconds won't leave permanent discolouration on the screen, but validate this info just to be safe

For those who find this in the future. I've talked to a authorized Sony tech who is familiar with these monitors. It is safe to use shielded speakers with a BVM, as long as they are shielded correctly. Were they not you would see it have an effect on your picture. If that's the case, just move them and degauss the monitor.

What speakers did you end up getting? I'm just using a pair of A60's but unsurprisingly the quality isn't great.

Re: BVM and Speaker Placement
I purchased some M Audio av40's for my PVM and even though they say they're shielded putting them too close to the screen added discoloration, so I have them on a shelf about a foot or so below the screen. they sound really great with my DAC/AMP combo.

Re: BVM and Speaker Placement
I use a pair of M-Audio M3-8 8 inch studio monitors with my plasma, but if you put them next to a BVM it'd probably rip a wormhole in time and space. Not well shielded at all, but incredible noises.
However, my 4.5 inch Presonus monitors are fine next to my old Trinitron PC CRT. Guess you just have to check the specs first.

Crack open your studio monitors/bookshelf speakers and put some shielding in there. I've used this stuff in the electronics cavities of a few of my guitars and it's really easy to apply.

Re: BVM and Speaker Placement
I've used these with my BMV-D32E1WU and PVM-20M4U, and they are not shielded:
https://www.bose.com/en_us/products/spe ... ystem.html
The faq states:
I also did the same with these speakers, with no problems whatsoever:
https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-970264- ... B001V5208I
I'm guessing the magnets in the speakers would have to be pretty strong to actually cause any problems. Maybe other speakers (with larger magnets) are an issue, but PC speakers like the ones above, I doubt they could do any harm even if not shielded.

The faq states:
I pulled up the landing adjustment screen on the D32 (it's solid white). I put these speakers on top and on the side next to it, could see no discoloration whatsoever.the speakers are not magnetically shielded. However, the magnetic field around the speakers is not strong enough to harm data on most magnetic storage media. (If you are still concerned, keeping these items at least four inches away from the Companion speakers should be sufficiently distant to limit magnetic interference.)

What are all of the things that can cause interference and discoloration with a 24" BVM? How far away from the BVM do those things need to be to not have any effect?

Anything that generates an electromagnetic field could (in theory) cause problems. But as far as electronics go, there's probably not much (besides big speakers) you have in your home that could do any harm.GeneraLight wrote:What are all of the things that can cause interference and discoloration with a 24" BVM? I have power cords and some game consoles (Wii, GCN, PS3) inside a TV stand with nothing on top in one corner of my room. Two LCD monitors, small computer speakers and headphones across the room.Michael Ikonomidis wrote:Anything that generates an electromagnetic field could (in theory) cause problems. Can you use headphones with a BVM?

None of that will cause any problems at all. You could put a game console right on top or next to the BVM if you like, same with power cords.GeneraLight wrote:I have power cords and some game consoles (Wii, GCN, PS3) inside a TV stand with nothing on top in one corner of my room. BVM doesn't have a headphone jack or any audio input. Just use the audio out from your console. I use these:

They sound pretty good.
