Literature you've just read

Post by atheistgod1999 »

Starting this thread despite not having finished reading anything recently. Currently reading The Hobbit, though.

I'll bite.

Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor

As a fan of Daley's Han Solo books (and even Neil A. Smith's Lando books, even if they aren't so great) I was intrigued by the prospect of a return to the Expanded Universe (now Legends) of old. Matthew Stover's books get recommended across the board, especially this one, so there was that too. As others have said, Stover successfully writes a continuity-light Star Wars story while cramming in as many obscure and semi-obscure references as possible to please old and new fans alike. I'm less fond of the amount of technobabble and quasi-metaphysical musing in the book (or Leia's use of the word “Shyriiwook”, a term I don't remember being introduced until after the Thrawn books), but at least the characters sound like themselves. It almost makes you forget how awful most of the Expanded Universe has been since... well, its inception, really. Though it got worse in the '90s and again when the Vong rolled around and it became necessary to commingle the (rather disparate) Prequel and C-canon continuities.

Fans often describe The Shadows of Mindor as being more “fun”than its contemporaries. While I don't think it ever reaches the same level of pulp as the Daley books that inspired it, it's certainly a step above, say, Legacy of the Force, a series that no one should ever have to read. The fact that Prequel events are only ever mentioned as throwaway lines doesn't hurt, either (although it's said the novel itself has only quasi-canonical status).

Currently reading Ernest Hemingway - For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Refreshing in its direct style with occasional moments of sublime brilliance. But this is much like reviewing the Mona Lisa I suppose. Either way, it's very good.

Let's keep it in the "What are you reading"-thread.
