Holy shit. A movie based on a video game that:

A.) Looks to be pretty true to the game (seems like it's based on the first game, with a smattering of the second thrown in for good measure).

and B.) Looks like it won't suck.

I'm there. Thanks for that, Pa.

EDIT: Just looked this up on the IMDb, and apparently David Cronenberg's longtime production designer, Carol Spier, is working on this, as is writer Roger Avary (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction). Nice...

Is there anyone on the forums here who hasn't played this series yet. Please do so. And play them in order if you can.

I foresee that the movie will convert a lot of people to SH.

I also hope that Silent Team gets the right timing and releases the best SH game ever shortly after the movie. That would rock.

EDIT: fyi, none other that Akira Yamaoka himself is doing the score for the movie. This is already my movie of the year! :D

Looked pretty cool. I've only played through SH2 and 4, and it looked like it had a lot of stuff from 2 in it, so I'll definitely be seeing it.

Pyramid Head rules.

I've only played the first. I consider to be the best horror game ever made. It is actually scary, as opposed to occasionally shocking like the entire RE series.

That depends on what you're looking for in a game. I consider Silent Hill 2 to be one of the greatest games ever made, from an artistic standpoint. The story is far, far above that of most games, IMO. The series isn't wholly without the cheap pop-out scares of the Resident Evil series, but overall it really shies away from them. Instead of getting to you by making you all jumpy like that, the SH series plays on your abstract fears. It's kind of like you're always expecting something to jump out at you, but nothing ever does (well, almost never). It achieves this deep-reaching atmosphere by use of sound and visual suggestions (like blood smeared on dilapidated walls, ghostly figures fading into the mist, psychologically disturbing enemy design, and the occasional subtle sound or voice clip heard when your attention is most focused).

Silent Hill 1 & 3 are two parts in a story that deals with what drives the town to be as messed up as it is. SH2 is a sidestory that takes place in the town, but doesn't explain much about why the town is that way. SH4 is a spinoff of some events alluded to in SH2, but ditches some of the series's trademarks like a static-filled radio, a flashlight, and pitch black areas.

If you're considering playing through the whole series, I'd recommend playing them in order. If you just want a taste of it, I highly recommend going with SH2 (get the greatest hits version if you're playing on the PS2, as it has some attractive extras not in the first release). Definitely play SH1 before SH3, and leave SH4 for last.

They played the trailer before the new Underworld movie and, I gotta say, it looks pretty impressive.
Feedback will set you free.

I'm going into the city tomorrow to pick up metal gear solid 3, If I see a bargin priced SH2 I'll pick it up. Good do with a good scare, RE games aren't scary.

1 game moment scared me though in Shadowman on DC/N64, I was being stalked by a serial killer in a dilapidated hotel complex in the dark, with just a torch to see with. He kept popping up randomly shooting with a nail gun. Dam I loved that game. beat the crap out of tomb raider

If you haven't read it here is an interview with Roger Avary about the movie that was published in Edge.

I love the Silent Hill games so much. I've been following the movie production for a while and am very excited.

I think it's notable how Avery and Christophe Gans (the director, he also directed Brotherhood of the Wolf) played through the first three games and are going out of their way to take all the visual design and themes from the games themselves. So the movie will thematically be true to the games instead of being a completely original movie with characters/homages to the games in it. Awesome.

Also it's notable how ALL of the sound design and music is taken directly from the games. They said any original music or sound needed is being worked on by Akira Yamaoka himself (the sound designer for the SH series) specifically for the movie.

The visual design does look great from the trailer.

No, for once, that's the bet: to have very high expectations. This way, if the movie isn't a letdown, we'll know we have witnessed something very special.

edit= Diabollokus, prepare for a ride. And remember, get SH2 "Greatest Hits". But don't play the extra scenario before you've finished with the main games.

Yahoo have a retarded movie provision.

It detects that I have realplayer installed, and offers that, then fails because theres no realplayer version of the trailer. So, it goes to movie preferences, and greys out the windows media option because it can't find media player. Well guess what? I DONT HAVE MEDIA PLAYER BUT I CAN PLAY THEM! There seems to be no override for this stupidity.

Fucktards.

I finally saw the trailer. This was after Yahoo not working, and after finding Sony made a Flash 8 only site (Linux has Flash 7).

Looks like a good film actually, amazing how much it resembles the game - this could be one of the first really /good/ game->film conversions.

Captain Ahar - the new Underworld is better than the first in most aspects. Don't let the corny 'Evolution' title fool you - it actually is a decent flick.

As far as this Silent Hill movie goes... i literally cannot believe it. Not until i see it. I've been let down way too much. *cries about Anderson Castlevania again*

Here's a slightly better link than the yahoo one...

I saw shots and a rip of the con footage. Without cutting this would probably be rated NC-17.

Spoilers follow:

No really, SPOILER:

SPOILER

Some people are fleeing from Pyramid Head, one woman fails to keep up with the crowd running into a school/church (can't tell) and Pyramid Head catches her. Pyramid Head pulls her back, ripping her clothes off somewhat, then RIPS MOST OF HER SKIN OFF with a single pull and throws it at the people just as they close the doors on the skin, which slams into the doors as if it's a living person reaching for help, after it falls you see this big shot of Pyramid Head holding the skinless body.

END OF SPOILER :P

Basically, when they had the con footage they asked people with small children/squeamish people to leave. No one listened so they let people know like four times. People didn't leave because some feature or other on the Superman movie was going to happen, so a lot of little kids got scared shitless by this footage.

Don't look at this if you're at work or something:

I'm hopeful... which almost feels as though I'm tempting fate. Surely the first good game-movie ever couldn't be the one based on one of my favorite series?
