SNK fighters
I think Maximum Impact is a woefully underrated game, it's great. The pacing is fast as hell for a 3D fighter, and the US/European releases had the balance and damage levels balanced out very nicely compared to the Japanese release. The sidestepping/dodging is vital to the gameplay and wasn't just tacked on to make it 3D either.
Something interesting to note though, is that gameplay wise it feels more like a straight Fatal Fury game than a King of Fighters title. The way the super moves work, the dodging, all that stuff, makes me wonder if the core engine started life as Wild Ambition 2 or something.
Sadly, no one played it and it got shitty reviews because it's a 3D fighter that doesn't have "Tekken," "Soul," or "Virtua" in the title and also had the gaul to be a 3D SNK game. I love how western reviewers completely trash SNK's games SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE THEIR 2D and then whenever they did a 3D one it got a similar thrashing because of how much the reviewer is trying to "keep it real." Man I fucking hate game journalism and game journalists so much. They should all explode. I fucking hate everything. Everything that doesn't say SNK on it that is.
Oh, since EVERYONE was too stupid to realize it, there are NO infinite wall juggles in the US Maximum Impact because you can dodge away from the juggling at any time like in the Dreamcast version of Soul Calibur. This was the dumbest complaint about a game ever since if anyone even remotely skimmed through the manual or saw on the back packing how it has sidestepping and dodging moves it would be a non-issue.
Everyone should give Maximum Impact a chance. Note that the US voice acting is pretty atrocious though, only the US XBox version and the European releases kept in the Japanese voice acting (outside of Japan of course). You can get the game used for like $10, just do that and return it if you hate it.

I was pretty impressed with it too, though I only got a chance to play it for a short while. It's fast, jumping attacks are actually useful (unlike in every 3d fighting game ever made up to this point) and it's the closest approximation of 2d fighting gameplay in 3d I have ever played. I know what you're talking about, exemplified by this snippet of the gamespot reviewNeo Rasa wrote:I think Maximum Impact is a woefully underrated game, it's great. "...it's unlikely that anyone other than King of Fighters fans will find much interest in Maximum Impact..."
but never goes in to to detail why...
"The potential exists, perhaps, for a 3D game to capture both the personality as well as the precision of a 2D fighting game. Unfortunately, KOF: Maximum Impact is not such a game."
Then says... it plays "basically plays like a 2D fighting game" and never elaborates on how it is imprecise...
Feedback will set you free.

Exactly. That's why it is currently my favorite 3D fighter. It plays just like the 2D series, and looks great in 3D. The only thing I disliked about KOF MI when it first came out was the English voice overs. They're the worst ever. That's why I recently picked up KOF MI Maniax (Xbox), which enables you to play with the original Japanese voices. And it makes a huge difference. Also, the last boss, Duke, is crap. One of the worst bosses I've ever seen. I hope Maximum Impat 2 offers something better.Acid King wrote:It's fast, jumping attacks are actually useful (unlike in every 3d fighting game ever made up to this point) and it's the closest approximation of 2d fighting gameplay in 3d I have ever played.
See I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught this.Ganelon wrote:Well, I wouldn't say it plays the same. For one, you have walls and secondly, the stylish dial-a-combos aren't exactly the KOF norm. Then you have the emphasis on juggles like in a 3D game. For that matter, it doesn't really feel much like a KOF game so much as an updated Wild Ambition title.
Heh, the game is set entirely in Southtown too now that I remember it.
Yeah like I said in my first post about it, they rebalanced it a LOT. Many of the ground combos can't go beyond around eight hits or so for a pretty small amount of damage, and the ones that can can be evaded by the player dodging as they get up or just standing and blocking/countering/etc. Basically all the "stuff" is still there, but it can all be avoided or otherwise broken out of now. So if you're pulling off combos to the extent of what's possible in the Japanese version it's because you're really that good or the opponent sucks horribly.
I've just picked up Neo Geo Battle Coliseum (along with Hakuto No Ken) for the Atomiswave. I should be getting them next week, so has anyone played NGBC? Any good?

I've only played the PS2 port, but I like it (aside from the atrocious loading times -- Atomiswave still has short loading times, but not nearly as bad). The roster is cool and it's fun playing a tag fighter with those characters. The engine is pretty good, feels kind of like KOF. The BGs are some of the best I've seen in an SNK Playmore game to date. Still, IMO SSTenka is the fighter to own for the AW right now (I've not played HNK though).I've just picked up Neo Geo Battle Coliseum (along with Hakuto No Ken) for the Atomiswave. We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

I bought Samurai Shodown V earlier this week. I'm far from being an expert on the SS series, so when I say that SSV seems a solid game with decent online play, take it with a grain of salt.
I've been playing it on Live off and on all day today... well, when I say "playing", I mean "losing repeatedly". Out of something like 50 matches, only a handful were laggy.
