480p supporting CRT TV suggestions
Hi everbody, after some research I feel lost, so I just registered here, in hope to get some help.
I fell in love with the CRT-technology recently, what I'm looking for are high-end CRTs that support 480p.
Also, they should have integrated speakers and be able to be tured sideways for Tate-mode.
This is already quite specific, and I found this list (taken from the on the smashbros subbreddit), but I feel its quite incomplete?
Sony PVM-14L5
Sony PVM-20L5
Sony BVM-D20F1U
Sony BVM-F24U
Sony BVM-1911
JVC V1700CG
JVC V1710CG
JVC V1900CG
JVC V1910CG
Panasonic BT-H1700
Any additions?
Also, I may be able to get a Sony BVM-14G1E with an integrated BKM-20D SDI Multi Decoder Adaptor / Input adaptor.
I couldn't find much about this combination, is it possible to get 480p on the BVM with the BKM-20D?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Re: 480p supporting CRT TV suggestions
So when you say CRT's I assume you are looking for a PVM/BVM? That's my guess judging from that list.
I'm also curious about 480p PVM's. From what I hear most can support all 3 resolutions natively. 240p, 480i, and 480p. Meaning you can play 480p games in progressive mode, play lightgun games, and play 240p games with scanlines. Is this true?

The multiformat PVM/BVMs can display these game resolutions:austin532 wrote:So when you say CRT's I assume you are looking for a PVM/BVM? That's my guess judging from that list.

240p/288p
480i/576i
480p/576p
720p
1080i
As far as lightguns go, I've only tried them on 480i so far, and they didn't work great. But my Multiformat PVM is kind of small, so it could be that.

Integrated speakers? This makes me sad.
PC CRT's also support native 480p.

Don't PVMs and BVMs support non-standard odd-ball resolutions like 256x224 on the SNES as well?

Re: 480p supporting CRT TV suggestions
If that's the case then what's the point of having CRT as you will either be stuck with native 240/480i or fixed 480p with crappy upscaled 240p?Einzelherz wrote:The multiformat PVM/BVMs can display these game resolutions:austin532 wrote:So when you say CRT's I assume you are looking for a PVM/BVM? Re: 480p supporting CRT TV suggestions
I have a PVM 20L5 and a BVM 20G1. First of all your requirement for it to have integrated speakers is pretty silly. The speakers in the PVM are mono and terrible, if you're spending the time, money and effort to get a professional monitor then at least spend $20 on getting some shielded stereo speakers.
Yeah this is true. Like Einzelherz wrote, the 20L5 supports up to 1080i. I've tested the Guncon 1 and 2 on both monitors and haven't had a problem. Tested the DC lightgun on the PVM and it's all good as well, it seems a lot more accurate compared to the guncon but it's region locked so that's kind of annoying. I haven't tested any lightgun games at 480p though, only 240p and 480i.austin532 wrote:I'm also curious about 480p PVM's. Re: 480p supporting CRT TV suggestions
IIRC the signal that comes from the system (NES has a modified resolution as well) is still a 240p (which itself is a timing modified 480i) signal. It just contains less pixel information.GeneraLight wrote:Don't PVMs and BVMs support non-standard odd-ball resolutions like 256x224 on the SNES as well?
I don't think I understand this question. Do you mean why use a CRT for native resolutions as opposed to an HDTV with scalers?austin532 wrote:If that's the case then what's the point of having CRT as you will either be stuck with native 240/480i or fixed 480p with crappy upscaled 240p?Einzelherz wrote:The multiformat PVM/BVMs can display these game resolutions:austin532 wrote:So when you say CRT's I assume you are looking for a PVM/BVM? Most likely not, as I have a 20G1E with the 21D adapter board and it does not support 480pmugli wrote:Also, I may be able to get a Sony BVM-14G1E with an integrated BKM-20D SDI Multi Decoder Adaptor / Input adaptor.

Re: 480p supporting CRT TV suggestions
No, but Doomsdave answered my question. I was basically asking if multiformat PVM's had the best of both worlds. Scanlines and lightgun support while also being able to support 480p. With TV's you can only have one or the other.Einzelherz wrote:I don't think I understand this question. Do you mean why use a CRT for native resolutions as opposed to an HDTV with scalers?

Re: 480p supporting CRT TV suggestions
On the subject of light guns, once when I was experimenting with my Extron RGB 109xi, I noticed on the point blank games the refresh rate is something like 58hz and changes back to 60hz between levels (it looks like changing resolution on a pc, black then a picture). When I was playing point blank recently I noticed the change in resolution taking a bit of a strain on my PVM, the image was getting pink tinted, and thats after being on for about 40 minutes, well past the usual 5 minutes warm up fluctuations. Its been fine since, and this hasn;t happened with any of the time crisis games (1-3 and crisis zone), or other light gun games (vampire night, virtua cop elite edition, ninja assualt, dino stalker, endgame and guncom 2).

Well, integrated speakers are nice to have when you'd like to take them to LAN-Partys. For my personal setup I'll connect them to my stereo.DoomsDave wrote:I have a PVM 20L5 and a BVM 20G1. That the BVMs lack them I'm aware of, its not a must-have, more a convenience thing.
Thanks, this is very helpful.AndehX wrote:Most likely not, as I have a 20G1E with the 21D adapter board and it does not support 480pmugli wrote:Also, I may be able to get a Sony BVM-14G1E with an integrated BKM-20D SDI Multi Decoder Adaptor / Input adaptor.

So basically, the BKM-20D is like your BKM-21D with less features, according tho p.14 of this manual:
http://dcemulation.org/~darc/SonyBVM14G1A.pdf
Is there a card that would do support 480p?
Sometimes, not all acceptable formats are mentioned, so is there a save way to tell which models support 480p?
Like, If the TV supports a horizontal scanning frequency up to 31kHz, it does support 480p?

Jvc's are good as well. and if you can get Ahold of one, Samsung made a few Rgb monitors, although not quite as common as either Sony or JVC.
I have a Samsung S-Video monitor that has a sharper picture than my PVM-14N6U.
