Import PS2 games that are incompatible with Swap Magic??...

Post by dave4shmups »

Of course, I'm referring to the latest version of Swap Magic.

I just want to know which import PS2 shmups, and non-shmups don't work with it. Because I would like to get this product not only to play import PS2 shmups with, but also to play some other PS2 imports; like a few games from the Sega Ages series, AM2's Macross game, etc.

Well I got rid of my swap magic a few months back, but it was not compatible with several of the sega ages games...

Monaco GP, Columns, Decathlete Collection, and Fighting Vipers to name a few.

I don't know if the new versions fixed the problems or not, but considering that most of my JP PS2 games are the Sega Ages collection, it was a problem for me.

Thanks for that info! Which version did you have? I just wonder if the latest version works with any of the current Sega Ages titles, like the Sega Memorial Collection, and the SDI/Quartet volume. If will work with the upcoming Treasure Box collection, that would be great! :D

Speaking of Swap Magic, do you know if there's a way to get import/burned PSone games to play on my PS2...it's only modded via Swap Magic.

My PSone games are getting old so I'm having to burn copies of them just to keep them in good condition.

Unfortunately I don't remember which version I had - the number 3.2 comes to mind, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I got rid of it just before Dragon Force was released (August 2005), so if there was a new version released after that, then I know mine wasn't the newest.

At any rate, it did not work with Monaco GP, Columns, Decathlete Collection, or Fighting Vipers, and it had some issues with Hokuto no Ken.

Err... get it chipped?

I just grabbed a ModBo 2.1 from these guys:
http://www.mod-chip.com/

And had a mate of mine do the install. All my import games work flawlessly (I don't even own any domestic PAL PS2 games - everything has been import buys so far). I own a chipped PSX also, and so far all the games from it work on the PS2 without any dramas.

People whinge about losing their warranty, but I bought my PS2 second hand anyway, so it didn't worry me (that, and getting anything warrantied in Australia is damn near impossible - we get treated like second rate customers here).

My originals are also starting to get worn/scratched, so I'm seriously considering making burn copies of all of them, and storing the originals away somewhere safe. It would piss me off big time if some of the older titles got scratched and were no longer available to replace (DDP on PSX, for instance). I copied one of my PSX originals and tested it on the PS2 with ModBo, and it worked without a hiccup.

I've got a modded PS2 which plays PS1 games. But I don't use it for PS1 games since CDRs will wear out the laser quickly. You're better off with a modded PS1 or use emulation like ePSXe. I actually prefer using ePSXe. I haven't found a game in my collection which doesn't work.

That only affects newer consoles - V9's and up. Mine's a V7, so no dramas.

For V9's and up you can do what's called the "LA fix" (named after the LA6508 cd-controller chip that sony goofed on). This is a simple hack that simply hijacks a 12V input and feeds it into the laser power source (which is typically a lower 7V).

You should note that the LA chip problem is not limited to CDRs. Scratched or scuffed media (both CDs and DVDs) can cause the same problem as the laser constantly re-reads parts of the media. If you own a V9 or younger console and are having it modded anyway, seriously consider adding the LA fix to the list. Anyone who installs these things will (or at least should) know about it and be able to do the very simple 1-wire fix.

Likewise if you mod a newer slimline PS2, you must also add in a secondary laser fix circuit to prevent laser burnout, such as a NeoFix or similar chip.

Swap Magic v3.3 works just fine with Dragon Force. EVERY shooter on the PS2 works with Swap Magic v3.3 although Psyvariar Complete and The Shooting requires the use of the CD version of Swap Magic (which is included along with the DVD version).

And no, Swap Magic doesn't play import PS1 games.

Thanks for that info, Ganelon! :D I just wonder which Sega Ages games DO work with Swap Magic 3.3. Perhaps only the more recent volumes do.

And what about the 2 Taito volumes? Does Swap Magic 3.3 work with those?

@Benstylus-did you ever try Sega Ages After Burner with it?

The fact that Swap Magic doesn't play import PS1 games is no problem for me since I have a modded PS1.
