Anyone into folk music? (try it maybe)
So for about 3 or so years I've been into Irish folk music.
Mostly because I was stuck in a dead end job and it was full of wit and humor in the face of drudgery and poor living.
Oh and if you want an entry musical instrument into Irish folk music you can find a tin whistle for around $10 on eBay. (Oddly enough many of the pros use cheap whistles key of D is common)
A few of my favorite groups:
The Dubliners: One of the most influential groups in Irish pub music. They have a HUGE library of songs.
The Parting Glass:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M3wr4hYSf4
Rocky Road to Dublin: (You may recall from Sherlock Holmes movie)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxBKgOyMzSc
Dirty Old Town:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mPraO_sJ7A
Whiskey in the Jar:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eOIU9ekSMk
Finnegan's Wake: (A miracle happens when booze is spilled over a corpse)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qstUxos2cBs
Oró Sé do Bheatha 'Bhaile: A traditional tune
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwM8pCAynbM
The Irish Rover: (This is a fun version when they sang with a younger band-The Pogues)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au30c9ZMIPg
There is a LOT of variety to these guys, just go listen to a few albums on Youtube.
Pandora music radio also has almost all their work if you create a station.
The Irish Rovers have a good amount of humor in their songs:
Lilly the Pink
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XEDkVHrUWk
Black Velvet Band:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfsgHyymG8E
The Orange and the Green:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qqs4EbU02As
The Unicorn Song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EPsuOEH1fY
Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFUTHcjiZGo
The Corries have a lot of awesome Bodhran playing and vocals. (Mostly Scottish though)
Have a whole show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ANYmx6 ... YT4hBye1vB
Sweeney's Men have a very mixed bag. They were a 60's band that did dip into some folk:
The Waxie's Dargle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKExPzTWFJU
The Clancey Brothers and Tommy Makem: (Another huge group, a bit less gritty than the Dubliners)
Nell Flaherty's Drake (An amusing song about the murder of a duck)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-gTGQmS_T0
Ah there is plenty more I could list. Should be enough for now I guess.
There are a lot of more current bands too. Mostly I just prefer the older stuff.
Dubliners leading my most listened to groups.
*bonus nautical music* (Don't bother with the imitation stuff from Black Flag video game)

Re: Anyone into folk music? (try it maybe)
Yet another of my problems is with the "folk music" term, but you could use listening to the Renaissance of the Celtic Harp (a.k.a. Renaissance de la Harpe Celtique) by Alan Stivell. Kind of a thing of its time, like Then Play On by Fleetwood Mac, but I digress.*
*) If you feel any kinship between those two albums, I can recommend Luv Yer Country by Mitch & Mitch as well.
I saw Kazuki Tomokawa labelled "acid folk" once. Listened to his album a lot some time ago. Sounds more "Eastern Bloc" to me - like Bettina Wegner or Vladimir Vysotsky - than anything typically filed under "folk" in English. Then again - when people casually perform your songs in usual "sing along" circumstances, I guess that's being folk via facta.

Is this thread about only european folk or just ethnic music in general?

It's tough, but my general idea was old songs in English. What term would you prefer?Obiwanshinobi wrote:Yet another of my problems is with the "folk music" term, but you could use listening to the Renaissance of the Celtic Harp (a.k.a. No, I suppose you talk about Appalachian folk and that kind of stuff too.qmish wrote:Is this thread about only european folk or just ethnic music in general?

Re: Anyone into folk music? (try it maybe)
but not, for instance, Yoruba andabo or omar souleyman..... indeed folk music is a pretty meaningless term on the internet, given that folkloric means something different where ever you are....

Well, what would you call this? He did sing in English among other tongues, but Renaissance of the Celtic Harp I recommended is all instrumental.

Since youre already very familiar with The Dubliners, I recommend the Rum Sodomy & the Lash album, probably the best one by The Pogues, followed by the second best one, If I Should Fall from Grace with God

Does 'anti-folk' count?
E.g: Jeffrey Lewis
Edit - if not, I guess maybe Staves count?

Re: Anyone into folk music? (try it maybe)
It's not something I listen to a lot, but, as a composer (sorta - I haven't done anything in a while), I do sometimes research folk/traditional and historical music. Usually, though, this means I end up listening to some low-quality encodes of old lacquer-disc recordings of things more than modern CD-quality music.
I did once randomly buy a "German Beer Hall music" CD, where in some of the tracks you can clearly tell that there are a lot of drunk people singing.
Not exactly from the CD, but this sounds similar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrtgBK1w-ts
I also have a CD of traditional (I'm assuming) Armenian songs played on an Oud by John Bilezikjian.
Example: Oror - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HOkLmL8JSw
e: but, giving the thread a re-read, I guess this isn't what you're talking about.

It is kind of hit and miss in my opinion. Some good songs though like the two you posted.
I think the best I've heard is Johnny Collins but that CD is like $100 anymore.

Song is apparently by Cyril Tawney.
Re: Anyone into folk music? (try it maybe)
I don't know why but I've realized that I actually enjoy some of that old time fiddle stuff.
But if it's on The Prairie Home Companion, chances are it's overproduced for me.
Maybe I'm off base but I have been wondering off and on for some time who some of those classic '70s "folk" rockers were. This probably isn't intended by the thread but I recall one song in particular with a kind of fantasy rock song sung by a woman. It definitely wasn't your ordinary '70s rock, metal, or whatever but it wasn't exactly folk rock either. I'm too enamored of tunes to really buy into sea shanties and Viking Metal though.

"Folk rock sung by a female" brings the name All About Eve to mind, but it's not from nineteen-seventies.
I have a soft spot for The Poppy Family featuring Susan Jacks' exploits, but this kind of pop-country was played by many European groups as well.
