Synthwave song suggestions, please!

Post by Mischief Maker »

In case I haven't made it clear already, I really like the movie Turbo Kid. Especially the soundtrack. I recently discovered the proper name for the genre of its music, which I had just been calling "80s synth" is actually called "synthwave."

Now I want more.

Can anyone here knowledgeable about the genre suggest some of the essential tracks for a newb like myself to pick up? (Note that I already have the Drive soundtrack)

This is the kind of music I'm talking about.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Hotline Miami and Hotline Miami 2 are good entry points to many synthwave musicians

When I was really into synthwave in my early college years, Laserdance was easily my favorite.

Fear
Endless Dream
Goody's Return

I guess a related genre is Italo Disco?

Youtube is overflowing with those, check the NewRetroWave channel for instance, search artists from the Rosso Corsa label too: http://rossocorsarecords.com/artists/, and several other in the same style will naturally show in the suggestions.

Don't tell me you haven't seen Kung Fury yet ?

I'll second this recommendation. The Heritage and Northern Council LP's are also excellent even if they don't quite reach the peaks of the two that you mentioned. Guy really needs to make some new music already!

Check out this unofficial release of a track from Lost after Dark. I found it after foraging through a bunch of comments on a John Hughes Megamix video on Facebook.

Some others (no links)
Com Truise
Computer Magic
Some Crystal Castles songs will easily qualify (Vanished and Air War are great) but half the time Alice Glass is screaming which I wouldn't recommend
Grimes should get an honorable mention at least.
Mexico by Gus Gus also dope.

I didn't even know that's what they call it now. I thought that was just New Wave with synths. Anyway, the song you posted sounded a little bit like something Giorgio Moroder would've produced in the late 70s or even something Cerrone would've recorded in the early 80s as plain ol' Disco.

Telex - "Moskow Diskow"
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1x9JK4YNv90

Giorgio Moroder - "The Chase"
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ViN2bRGrBx8

Cerrone - "Panic"
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xlOhlia8SkI

You might even wanna go further into the Smooth Jazz section and check out Paul Hardcastle. He did a buncha instrumentals that hit some of those same notes.

"Rain Forest"
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yKTAJkVFvCI

Or you could go the other way and look for more obscure junk...

Section 25 - "Looking From A Hilltop"
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JUJARoQ_1y8

Greg Vandike - "Clone"
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bxF0dAsNFoo

The Durutti Column - "Neon"
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=A4MKvZ8ZEGg

I also second the suggestion to look into Italo Disco, which is choke-full of HI-NRG, sugary beats 8)

Disco commando? Rather politically incorrect, but they are like The Who of Disco Polo and I find the voice job here pretty operatic at heart.
Although my most sincere response would be The Story So Far by Divine.

When I'm a little more with it, I'll make a top ten favorite artists for you, there is A SHIT TON of this music, a lot of it is good, a lot is so-so, and a lot is superb. Half the fun of course is finding the best stuff for yourself.

I like listening to the real stuff from the 80s. Italo Disco was where the style really started. They play tons of it on my favorite streaming station Intergalactic FM

Midnight and Absinth3 are great too!!

It's a shame the ManiacSynth station got taken down, I wonder what the story with that was.

again, probably not "synthwave" or whatever but the band Happy Meals from Glasgow are pretty great. synthy, disco-y, melancholy.

In my opinion this is the best synthwave album released so far. But it's with vocals, so it might not be your thing if you're more into the whole cinematic soundscape thing.

Droid Bishop's "Beyond the Blue" is another favorite of mine:

I also recommend the "Beyond Synth" Podcast if you want to get a bit deeper into the whole synthwave thing.

Shameless plug here, but I'm part of a synthwave/retrowave band called Delorean Overdrive:

For modern stuff, I also really loved the Opolopo album Voltage Controlled Feelings, though it veers more towards synthfunk

I have a few on my MP3 player for the gym on cardio day.

"Escape Velocity" is my goto.

You can star in your own 1980's workout montage.
Sometimes it skips into my other folksy stuff like The Dubliners and I lose my drive.

Feels pretty good.
