you can relate everything in life back to a (i'm just posting it for this thread only) shmup

any chance you get you use it to think about new bullet patterns that have yet to be seen

you try to locate ways and orders of doing things in real-life to 'unlock' the possibility of new shmups being released and-or ported

you lived really tight for many years, then spend massive amounts of money just on shmups, and plan all your cashflows according to what replay DVDs, OSTs, and games are being released

every time you see a TV for sale, you think about how useful it would be TATEd - are the speakers at the front? are the sides nice and flat? where are the inputs located?

you're convinced secretly that something will happen in real-life when you finally get around to unlocking all the ships in RTF

you hear things and read things about conspiracy-implantable-microchips and wonder first if they could be useful in speeding up reflexes and slowing down experience of time

every other hobby and interest you ever had becomes incorporated into your shmupping

you just knew that someone would see the light eventually when home-widescreen TVs began to be availible, that they are meant for horis (and by extension, longer screens in TATE)

everytime you see a plane or helicopter you think of the shmup game it reminds you of

when people say history repeats you think its just the second loop.

its kinda like skating - even if you haven't done any for years, you always think that way about any surfaces you see - that'd be perfect to skate on.

When you see a movie about human conception, and cheer the little sperm with "Shoot the core, guys! Come on, SHOOT THAT CORE!"

Hi, I'm still alive.

Though Zweihander mentioned "love juice" on his first post. Does that count as teh secks if it's on your own?

When more than 60% of your Game OST collection comes from shmups.

When you basically do everything to shmup music :) Chores have never been more fun :D

+10 points if you actually shuffle your CDs in a multi-disc stereo system, so you can never predict what comes next :)

When you constantly look up Marketplace Forums, special import shops, Ebay and Yahoo Japan Auctions for the best prices on those early Cave soundtracks that you've missed out years back.

When you wish those current Game Music Concerts (Video Games Live & Play!) would have several tributes to historic shmups like Gradius, R-Type, Darius and the like.

THANK YOU!!! I used to play this game on our ancient computer when I was a very young person (age 4 untill the computer died when I was 12 or so), but I couldn't remember the name, and when I tried to articulate it, none of my friends recognized such a game (surprising considering my friends). As soon as I saw "Zaxxon" written out in your post it clicked "THAT'S IT!" I immediately went to wikipedia to have it confirmed, awesome.

- You think that you could make a shoot-em-up from any storyline or plot in the history of literature (why don't you try hard, Mr. Darcy?)

- You insist upon calling the genre 'shoot-em-ups' and not 'shmups', because you are pedantic enough to consider the former to be the correct term. Er.

- You like the fact there is a deficit of shoot-em-ups on the Nintendo DS, because playing DS on the train is now the only time you ever get to play any other genres of games. Well, except for Nanostray.

- You think a sword is a perfectly sensible type of weapon to equip a fighter with.

- If you live in the UK, you used to yearn to be on that bit on Get Fresh on a Saturday morning in 1986/1987 where the kids tried to do as well as they could on Xenon for the Amiga. (Side note: this must surely have been one of the first ever regular video game challenges on mainstream TV :D )

- Further to the above, if you still resent the fact that being early adopters and having a 1.2 Kickstart revision Amiga meant that you couldn't play Xenon 2.

- When on an airliner during the moments after you've climbed above the cloud cover, you expect to be attacked by the first few enemy waves.

- You think you can use the at-seat entertainment system to fight off the same.

- You play a Galaxian clone on the at-seat entertainment system for so long that you cause both the score and the level number to roll over back to zero.

- When on the ground, you cringe every time an airliner takes off, believing that this will inevitably be followed by the destruction of the airport in huge explosions.

- When you see Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and suspect them of having collaborated on the music for DoDonPachi.

- When you see Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey and know that you could easily have taken Death on at 1ccing R-Type.

- When you're writing a list like this on a forum like this at about 6:30 am before you leave the house.

- When you walk to the shops in the rain and end up soaked except for a 2 inch strip right down your body which is perfectly dry

- When you assign points to car models and tot up a score as you lock them into your headlights

- when you are still thinking a few posts back and insist that it is "shoot 'em up", not "shoot-em-up" or "shmup"

- When you follow a car down the motorway exactly 3 metres behind it pretending to be a multiple

- When your ten year old nephew asks to play "that black and white game" when he visits

- When you eat a doughnut piece by piece and leave the bit of jam in the middle 'till last because it might spill thus losing your chain and reducing points if you do it wrong but increasing the satisfaction if you get it right

when you're at a crowded mall, and you constantly try to avoid bumping the barrage of bullet patterns aka, people.

when the sound of a japanese guy screaming "DoDonPachi!!" brings a smile to your face.

when Ikaruga is synonymous to a Puzzler for you.

when some one says "buried treasure" you instatnly think of a copy of RSG left in piles of boxes in the basement

you actually care about "Storylines" of shoot-em-up games

when you suddenly aim for a 1CC on any other genre of gaming....

when you press ABXYStart everytime you miss a chain in Ikaruga

when you occasianlly go to MAWS and look for some uber hidden shooter gems for you latest Mame build

when 10hours of your Shenmue play time is simply aiming for the TOPSCORE in space harrier

when you eat seafood you instantly think of "WARNING! Huge Battleships Approaching"

when you look at the Dreamcast controller and think that it would make a great model of a Shmup ship...

and you look at teh PS2 controller and say that it would be the perfect rival for the DC controller ship

then you say screw itl,N64 XB and NGC controllers look like SHmup ships as well, i wish they made a Shmup game wherein the ships are controllers of different consoles...

theny ou think the RSG ship would make a neat looking Console pad/controller

Look, I don't think you understand where I'm coming from here. People should refer to them as shoot-em-ups, or at a stretch shoot-'em-ups, purely because I said so

- when you know that no matter what anyone else says, it's still

Shoot 'em up

- when you visit a zoo for the fist time and realise that lions don't have fiery tails

- when you realise that those things that fly around and sting you are wasps, not bees.

- When next time you see a wood lice you decide to kill it segment by segment, starting at the tail end

- When you have played PGR2 for 100 hours and haven't ever driven a car in it

- When you don't question why a bunch of multiples can kill a whole empire of baddies but can't kill yourself

- You dream of the day when the world flips sideways so you can see it properly

Cheers
