NieR
Re: NieR
Haha, on a NieR Automata demonstration someone from the dev team (yoko taro or a platinum guy?) talked about how he wanted to make a 2D shooter and was a fan of Cave shmups. But square wouldnt allow that so it has a lot of 3D shooting elements. a portion of this stream
I like how they're showing combat and enemy types with spontaneous encounters using debug mode rather than making elaborate setpieces.

Re: NieR
The combat looks really good. You can equip two weapons at a time and switch between two different sets of them whenever you want, so it seems closer to Bayonetta than the rest of Platinum's games. Enemy designs seems nice as well.
Yoko Taro = GOATInterviewer: It feels like a 3D representation of a classic bullet hell game.
Taro: I actually want to create a 2D shooter, but Square-Enix is not allowing me to do that, so this is where I'm letting all of my [???] out.
Square Enix guy: You might be able to create it with Taito.
Interviewer: What are some of your favorite shooters?
Taro: I like Cave shooters where there are a lot of bullets coming at you.
Re: NieR
This is the most "Platinum" game out of the ones they recently released (and Scalebound too, for that matter), and it is a JRPG of all genres. I greatly deslike JRPGs, but this has me interested. In fact, I don't want to get a PS4, but some of the upcoming games are probably going to change my mind about it: namely NiOh and Nier, and of course, the already released Bloodborne. If From decides to make a new single-player oriented Armored Core, similar to For Answer, and remaster Demon's Souls, then I can see myself getting one... eventually.
Still, consider me cautiously optimistic.
In the words of mr. Miyamoto: "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad".
*haven't played Devil's Third yet, so I don't know if Itagaki still got it
**I also have yet to play the Virtual On-like Gundam games. If only they came out on the 360...

Agreed. Platinum is one of the few remaining Japanese developers capable of making a high-quality, arcade-style, adrenaline-inducing, fast-paced 3D action game on consoles (the others being Capcom, From and maybe Tecmo*), so it's kinda sad when they are not in full control of the project at hand.evil_ash_xero wrote:The reason some of their recent games have been garbage, or lacking, is because of short schedules, limited budgets, or not having control of the project.
It looks like this is up their alley, and they can delay it all they want, as long as it comes out good. I'm tired of rushed Platinum products. Such a waste of talent.

Re: NieR
You think Squeenix would allow a fangame where you play as one or all of the three dragons (with Nier as a hidden character) and shoot 'em up through one or all of the three games' campaigns turned into shmup stages with Drakengard arrangements playing in the background?iconoclast wrote:The combat looks really good. I don't know, but maybe he could put some shmup segments in his games like Hideki Kamiya does. They'd probably be better since he has better taste, as you can see from his previous comment and his ten most memorable games:

A bit unfair to infer the other studios' incapability when publishers may as well not be willing to fund such games development anymore (unless you have examples of disastrous attempts to develop such a game in Japan of late to give).Neathyr wrote:Platinum is one of the few remaining Japanese developers capable of making a high-quality, arcade-style, adrenaline-inducing, fast-paced 3D action game on consoles (the others being Capcom, From and maybe Tecmo*), so it's kinda sad when they are not in full control of the project at hand.
That being said, NieR isn't renown for being quite the "high-quality, arcade-style, adrenaline-inducing, fast-paced 3D action game" you seem to hope its sequel to become. Ask the most ardent enthusiasts on here whether they would have it without all the warts & distractions.

Re: NieR
Wasn't Sega unwilling to publish (and consequently fund) Bayonetta 2, so Nintendo had to step in so that said game could see the light of day? Oh well. Can't really blame them if the sales are not there (I mean, we knew beforehand that the audience for such games are not on the Wii U, but I'm just glad we even got the game in the first place).Obiwanshinobi wrote:A bit unfair to infer the other studios' incapability when publishers may as well not be willing to fund such games development anymore (unless you have examples of disastrous attempts to develop such a game in Japan of late to give).Neathyr wrote:Platinum is one of the few remaining Japanese developers capable of making a high-quality, arcade-style, adrenaline-inducing, fast-paced 3D action game on consoles (the others being Capcom, From and maybe Tecmo*), so it's kinda sad when they are not in full control of the project at hand.
Regardless, I did my part by buying it during the launch window. Interesting fact: back when Nintendo was officially represented here in Brazil, we got a few Wii U games with a slipcover (only the ones that were published by Nintendo itself, though).
Spoiler

Hmm, I am well aware of that. Whenever I see Nier brought up, it's generally the OST, the story and what-the shit-not getting all the praise. I don't expect this to become a full-on action game (in the vein of Ninja Gaiden or Metal Gear Rising) because it would have been "ignorance is bliss" taken to a new level, but given Platinum's pedigree, it's almost 100% guaranteed to be a huge step forward gameplay/moviments-wise when compared to Cavia's offering. And by that, I mean a more gameplay-centric title with some actual mechanics to delve into, along with a far better combat than your usual jRPG, which is always a plus.Obiwanshinobi wrote:That being said, NieR isn't renown for being quite the "high-quality, arcade-style, adrenaline-inducing, fast-paced 3D action game" you seem to hope its sequel to become. Its sequel is very likely to become that because Platinum is involved. I have dozens of unfinished TPP slashers piling up over here, but only one unfinished NieR, so it'll make little difference for me whichever way the sequel unfolds, but if NieR as we know it had feelings, it could feel a tad lonely the way things are now.
If I had to take a guess which other dev than Cavia would improve NieR in the action department while preserving its original flavour, I'd say Falcom (zoomed out camera 'N' all). Or maybe DreamFactory as they were A.D. 2004 (but it's 2016 and counting).

Re: NieR
There's not much need to preserve the original flavor, a retread would be antithetical to the game's spirit to begin with.
It's been said that Yoko Taro (Nier's creator) "never makes the same game twice", and it's not hard to see this if one traces a line through Drakengard 1, Nier, and Drakengard 3. So if he can, instead, work together another structurally and narratively unique little title (this time with actually fun combat ™ thanks to our lord and saviours Platinum), then I'll be perfectly happy, personally.
Give me a weird little rpg with a weird little story and Platinum's brand of smooth and free combat, and that'll be a perfect game for me and another rare console title from the current gen that I can enjoy.

Platinum should handle a Legend of Zelda reboot, then (be it handheld spin-off), shouldn't they? If Capcom could make it...Squire Grooktook wrote:So if he can, instead, work together another structurally and narratively unique little title (this time with actually fun combat ™ thanks to our lord and saviours Platinum), then I'll be perfectly happy, personally.
Here I was trying to remember whatever I disliked about NieR combat (other than behind-the-arse camera seeming obsolete, but this genre games hardly ever do the camera 100% right). Couldn't put my finger on it, so maybe the problem was that it felt EXTREMELY unoriginal. Heck, I couldn't bear how silly Soul Reaver 2 and PoP: The Sands of Time combat looked, but at least this much of them was memorable.
If they asked me where the combat should be taken, I would say MOUNTED (because pig-riding was memorable alright). See how diverse vehicular gameplay was in the Jak & Daxter series, but even there, excellent game engine wasn't squeezed to the last drop ("kart racing" explored in Jak X was hardly my favourite part of the main games, whereas flut flut abuse remained largely unexplored).
TPP beast-riding arcade action-adventure (perhaps in the vein of "Road Trip" Choro Q titles) - now that sounds fresh to me.

Yeah, right now this & Persona 5 look head and shoulders above anything else that's coming out in 2017. Yakuza 0 will be the coolest game of the year, though.

Rather off-topic and late, but...
Are such slipcovers more common in any other region? The only two I recall getting with PAL console games are the PS3 Vanguish (Sega) and Metroid Prime Trilogy (Posh! Now if only I enjoyed playing Prime a bit more...)
I saw worse pictures on here taken with supposedly better cameras.Neathyr wrote:Interesting fact: back when Nintendo was officially represented here in Brazil, we got a few Wii U games with a slipcover (only the ones that were published by Nintendo itself, though).
Quite neat if you ask me. And yes, I couldn't take a good picture even if my life were to depend on it.Spoiler

Yeah, it's definitely my most anticipated. I am also quite excited about Scalebound, despite some of the reactions from the new footage.
Thing about that, is there was older footage, where the game looked more "normal", for the most part, and people were totally fine with that.
Platinum obviously wanted to show a set piece, and it didn't look uber fun. But I think stuff like that will be just here and there, and will probably be more fun to play, than to look at.
Anyway, Nier looks really good.

Re: NieR
I can't understand why anyone would want such a thing. I mean, I could see someone who can't play wanting a "piss easy" mode. But for it to play itself? Well, whatever works for you, I guess.
I have a friend who is a single dad of 2 girls, and works all the time, and when he gets stuck on a boss or whatever, he just loses interest and stops playing. Something like that would be helpful to keep his interest. But I doubt he'd want something that played itself all the time. Just when he got stuck or whatever.
He used to have some skill, but lost his edge completely. Sad.
Anyway....Luckily, it has Easy, Normal, and Hard modes.
I wonder if this game can live up to my hype? It just looks so awesome.
I checked out the original Nier recently, and had some problems with it. The story seemed to have some personality, but I didn't care for constant talking with the book (not that it wasn't fun, I just don't like constant yakking in games). The control was playable, but clunky. And the fetch quests...I think you can avoid them for the most part, but I wasn't a fan of all the mundane tasks they were asking me to do. Sheep hunting?
I'll watch a YT vid, to see the whole story. I did have some fun with it though. I can definitely see this being a match made in heaven, with Platinum handling the gameplay.
Also, the soundtrack was really impressive. It kind of seemed like it was on a whole other level than everything else in the game. Wasn't a fan of the same repetitive song in the "world map" part, though. That got so annoying.
From what I have heard of Automata's soundtrack, it sounds at least up to par.
