gscartsw v3.2 for both a SCART and VGA output?

Post by aallgod »

Hi Everyone,

I figure I should ask this question now, before the pre-orders start up again for the gscartsw...

I am eventually looking to set up my new gaming rig in a few months, and it will include both a flat-screen tv (by way of Framemeister) and a PVM-20L5 (through BNC) for my output choices. I am looking to hook up at least 6 consoles to the rig, so I need a switcher to accommodate this. Now the biggest caveat, as discussed in a previous thread of mine regarding VGA Dreamcast on the PVM, is that I will soon be looking to get an Extron RGB converter to go from VGA to RGBs to enable my Toro Box'd Dreamcast to display correctly on the PVM. I was originally looking to have the Toro Box RGB connection to go to the switcher (to be available for the flat screen) and the VGA connection going through Extron and eventually to my PVM. Of course in this set up, this would mean that if I wanted to play my other consoles from the switcher on my PVM, I would have to swap connections to said monitor, thus rendering certain Dreamcast games not able to be displayed on the PVM through 480p.

I was initially debating between the Shinybow 6x2 switchbox (2 SCART output) or the gscartsw v3.2 for my setup. I am leaning more toward the gscartsw since it can do both VGA and SCART outputs. Now, with the Dreamcast hooked up to the gscartsw through a SCART cable (RGBs), is it possible that the input signal could then be pushed out to my PVM (through my aforementioned Extron set up) through the VGA output on the gscartsw? (My not-so-informed self feels that this could work, since the Toro Box can push the 480p signal through SCART, with that signal then being output through VGA)

Similarly speaking then, could any retro system's signal then theoretically be pushed through the gscartsw's VGA output and to my PVM? This would be awesome if so, as it would mean that I could just shove all of my console signals either to my flat screen by way of SCART, or to my PVM by way of VGA converted to RGBs through the Extron without having to swap any cables. I have no idea if any of this is possible, but figured I would field the question to you all -- you seem to know your technical stuff really well.

Thanks!

I remember seeing SuperG mention that the switch output through both SCART and VGA at the same time, yes

I think for your setup you'd be better served by an Extron Crosspoint.

You can easily forward 31kHz RGB lines through my switch. The problem is that HV sync has to be combined to composite sync before reaching my switch. Here I use beharius Hanzo and ArcadeForge UMSA (as explained in http://junkerhq.net/xrgb/index.php/Dreamcast). Or simply use Toro (http://www.beharbros.com/#!toro/cfom), as far as I understand both these devices are incorporated here.
EDIT: yes, you'll be able to shove all your console signals to both of your output devices (flat panel and PVM) simultaneously. You can also switch gscartsw VGA sync mode between HV sync and composite sync, it will allow you to use VGA output with cables like this: http://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=5 ... oCFffw_wcB
