Marvel characters, yes, but this wasn't done by Marvel Studios (Disney). Fox owns the rights to the X-Men still.
Yeah that's what I thought, except the movie opened with the Marvel Studios logo... What's the catch?

Ugh. This one I couldn't *stand*. I thought "Cobra" was just ridiculously awful, and not in a good/funny way.
It is laughably awful.

Warcraft

A neat fantasy human kingdom is invaded by orcs from a magical portal into another world. The necessities, influences, failures and misunderstandings that lead good people to tragedy and war are told from the point of view of a orc chieftain and a human general. Other races appear briefly as allies of the humans.

In the vein of Star Wars VII, mostly intended as an "origin story" that sets a solid foundation for sequels and side stories (mission accomplished), but also a sufficiently self-contained high fantasy tale of heroism. Given the constraints of a known general plot (the orcs stay, war is neither won nor avoided, and certain main characters are going to survive because they are featured in the videogames) it's unusually well written.

Excellent scenery and special effects, mostly very faithful to the appearance of characters, units, buildings in the games and pleasantly unrealistic as a consequence.

I watched Venus Wars on bluray.... man, this one was quite a surprise. Excellent animation, right up my alley.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I saw part of it a loooong time ago. I was like 15 or 16 at the time. I didn't remember much.

The animation is really top notch, great mechanical designs etc. The story isn't mind blowing but solid and the pacing was good and kept it's momentum. From what I've read up on, watching the movie won't really spoil the manga and vice versa... like Akira.

It took me this long to actually see it and I was quite surprised how I've passed over it all these years. From what I've gathered from posts on here I think you're from the same school as me as far as this kind of stuff goes. I think you'll enjoy it... it's definitely worth watching and finding out if nothing else.

I had an old friend come visit last weekend. We started it late one night.... we got about 10 minutes in and she asked "Wow this is really good looking.... can we go outside a smoke a joint before we get into it?" It was funny because I was surprised also and was thinking the same thing.

All Men Are Brothers
I've never seen a Hong Kong movie on blu-ray before this, so this was a very nice treat. The movie itself is about 108 heroes and I guess is a sequel to The Water margin. Either way, this movie has tons of action, and lots of heroes dying just to take over a city that is walled, and surrounded by water. Interesting action, and a good stable of stars from Shaw Brothers in this. I quite enjoyed it, even if you wondered if anyone would be alive.

Looney Tunes: Back in Action: ***

I'm kind of surprised I hadn't seen this movie before now, since I pretty much wasted half my childhood on Looney Tunes (the Roadrunner ones were always my favorites.) The critical consensus is that this was pretty average (57% on Rotten Tomatoes) but I thought it made for a decent turn-your-brain-off type movie, with plenty of stuff only people who wasted half their childhood on Looney Tunes would get, and a few well placed fourth wall breaks (let's just say that the product placement is a tad gratuitous...) Admittedly I have a bit of a soft spot for incompetent villains, and this movie seems to have plenty of them. That said, most of the depictions of the various characters aside from Bugs and Daffy seem to miss the mark a bit, and end up coming across as exaggerated caricatures of what someone unfamiliar with the source material might get out of a couple of the old cartoons.)

They're good, though I think Spielberg delved too deeply into emotional schmaltz for the movies. The opening of Saving Private Ryan is magnificently gritty, but then we have to endure Tom Hanks for another grinding two hours. Schindler's List hits you over the head with its message non-stop... I suppose that might be appropriate given its source material, but it makes for such a dour viewing. The ending credits are quite moving though.

I think his movies started to get too full of themselves by this point in his career in the 90s - so much a contrast with his earlier pure-entertainment of Close Encounters, E.T., or Indiana Jones, and so on.

I think SPR is an excellent war movie through and through bar the opening and closing graveyard sequences which are fucking Spielberg patented uber-shmaltz and almost ruin what is otherwise an superb film. Cut those off and it's top notch. One of SB's best.

Schindler's List is overrated, but not hugely. The cast and performances are excellent and it's definitely handled well. It's not a great movie, but has some standout scenes, mostly thanks to Fiennes.

Didn't know that ended up on Netflix, will need to watch it. I'm expecting it to be amazingly bottom-of-the-barrel garbage, so I'll have to prepare drinks first. Who can say no to a desperate washed up Dolph Lundgren though?

I watched under the skin the other night on recommendation from someone. I didn't really think it was up to much. Might have been better if the blurb on the back of the dvd box didn't spoiler the big "surprise".

Still, you get to see Scarlett johansson in the nip, so it's not all bad.

Desperate washed-up Dolph Lundgren was the saving grace of Johnny Mnemonic... That and the crack-addicted telepathic cyborg dolphin. Man. I wish the movie was about that fella instead.

Good enough for me. I will look into it. I've been dipping my toes into some 80's and 90's anime mainly to keep the listening skills up. It's nice if I can find something genuinely enjoyable that I've not seen, but they are few and far between.

Saving Private Ryan
Other than the total bullshit present-day scenes (good lordy) it was amazing. Apocalypse Now will probably always be my favorite war movie, but I gotta say SPR was probably the most immersive.

Ok I watched it. 5/10. Not terrible, not particularly good. Fight scene at the end was in a really nice setting with some great angles, but that's probably the most notable thing. Either that or 57 year old Dolph Lundgren dating a girl that can't be more than 28.

Terminator 2

I've seen this so many times I know it beat for beat, yet every time I watch it over the years it's increasingly disappointing. This is probably the second most overrated of Cameron's work after Avatar.

With the CGI aged to the point where it no longer has the diverting impact it did on release, all that's left are the stunt sequences, which are admittedly great bar a few glaring stunt doubles that would benefit from a CGI makeover, the plot, acting, casting, and pacing.

And those things just don't hold up so well. The video game format becomes trying during its 2.5 hr runtime, to the point where parts of it are outright dull. Arnie's machine humanisation is as clunky as his delivery and Furlong with his kiddie slang is just annoying. It spends far too long ambling over Cameron's wife, giving Hamilton a disproportionate amount of screen time that her horrible overacting does nothing to justify. The movie could be an hour shorter and benefit from it.

In the end it's not as good as The Terminator by a long shot, lacking the same horror or consistency, and not as good as other Hollywood blockbusters of the era, like Jurassic Park or Cameron's own Aliens.
