Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
For the VP30 and VP50 30W should be plenty.
You can find other PSUs with a higher rating. Especially those with variable output voltage often just list a generic 5A limit, but you can pretty much ignore that if the whole PSU has a higher wattage rating. For example: if a PSU supports 12V@5A (which equal 60W), you can be pretty sure that 6V@7A aren't a problem. E.g. the MW7H50GS.

Oh, a universal power supply that works? Excellent. I was trying to look into laptop chargers, because having something universal you can reuse for something else is always good.Fudoh wrote:For the VP30 and VP50 30W should be plenty.

I just ordered that and a VP50. Time will tell if I made a huge mistake or not.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I've been using one of those 3rd party 5a psu's with a vp50 for ages and not had any issues.
I don't know but wonder if it only draws 7a under certain processing loads. (1080i processing maybe?).
You'll need a PC with a real serial port if you need to flash in to the latest firmware (which definately has the cadence detection switch).

Yeah, I know how to connect BNC cables since my Quake 1 and 2 LAN days before RJ45Guspaz wrote:Gotta push them in before turning them 90 degrees, since the connectors are spring-loaded.
If you pull on a BNC cable or terminator and it comes off, then it wasn't plugged in right.

Ah, interesting. I’ll be on the lookout for proper terminators then, thanks!BazookaBen wrote: Yeah, they could be too cheap. I had some cheap RCA>BNC adapters that wouldn't make a proper connection unless you titled them a certain way. Like the signal pins were too small or something. So yeah, if you try some different terminators you will likely have better results.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
This N64 I bought on eBay keeps just making this popping sound and flickering white for a fraction of a frame (only a cluster of scanlines lines flash white) when I turn it on. The top shell is currently off and it's hooked up via composite to a CRT. I'm trying it with a game that doesn't require a rumble pak that I cleaned the contacts of with q-tips and rubbing alcohol. I also cleaned the cartridge connector with compressed air and rubbing alcohol. I made sure the jumper pak is completely inserted.

probably not available yet, since the HDCP/HDMI level isn't commonly available yet to decrypt. At the moment you would need a HCDP downgrade (HDFury Integral), a VP to down convert and a scan converter to do the D/A conversion after that. Quite expensive as of now.

This N64 I bought on eBay flickers white and makes a soft popping sound (through the AV out) when I turn it on. I made sure the jumper pak was firmly inserted, that the game didn't require the expansion pak, and that the game's contacts were clean (I even opened up the cartridge and they were like new and shiny).
The only thing I found that could be an issue is the power supply. The power supply (it's North American BTW) outputted ~10.6V through the pin that's supposed to output 12V and ~3.4V through the 3.3V pins. I didn't think that the latter was the issue due to it being very close to the intended amount, so I opened it up and just checked the former and turned the screw that controls the voltage until it was ~12.1V. Then I closed it up and it still wouldn't work, and then I realized that I probably made the 3.3V pins' voltages higher. Sure enough, they now both measure at ~3.9V.
Is the power supply causing the issue?

Was Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection's emulator better on the 360? I just picked it up again on the PS3 and I don't remember it being so awful on the 360, but I may have just not known any better.
I mean it's got crackly sound, visual glitches, very notable lag; I think I even saw a sprite priority glitch... I may have just gotten more picky with age though lol

Is the way composite video transmits the image (besides the retrace and the colorburst) basically the luma with modulated chroma overlaid?

Yes, that's why it's called composite video, it's all the video information squashed into a single signal.atheistgod1999 wrote:Is the way composite video transmits the image (besides the retrace and the colorburst) basically the luma with modulated chroma overlaid?

I already knew that composite video contains all the picture information; I was just wondering how it transmits both the luma and chroma on the same line.ApolloBoy wrote:Yes, that's why it's called composite video, it's all the video information squashed into a single signal.atheistgod1999 wrote:Is the way composite video transmits the image (besides the retrace and the colorburst) basically the luma with modulated chroma overlaid?

yes, chroma is modulated. 3,58MHz for NTSC and 4,43MHz for PAL.

Does anyone have a technique to preserve PGM cart labels?
The glue for the labels seems to be as much use as a chocolate fire guard. Eventually they're either gonna peel or fall off, do people glue them down (and what glue do you recommend) or is sellotape the way forward (I hope not)?

How do I move only the Windows 7 boot files to an external SSD that I'll swap my current HDD with? I want all the things I actually use on the SSD I'll put in internally, but unused stuff like archives that might be nice for future reference on my HDD that I'll make external.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Alright folks, got a weird audio noise issue.
Current set up has my SFC and PS2 both using RGB SCART cables from retro_console_accessories with RCA audio break out. Audio goes to a mixer where it is mixed with my PC audio and then output to my computer, speakers, and headphones.
Mixer:

Video goes to an RGB SCART-to-mini din adapter hooked up to my XRGB mini. I don't have a switcher or anything, just manually exchanging the cables.
So here's the issue:
Whichever console is plugged in to the Mini, generates noise to the mixer. Even if it's totally muted on the mixer. The buzzing is exacerbated by bright screens (almost nonexistent on a black loading screen, for example), messing with the connection between the SCART cable out of the console, and the mini din adapter.
The issue is minimized or completely nonexistent when the console is off, the picture is black or very dark, the cable is unplugged from the mixer or the console (duh), when the console is not plugged in to the mini din adapter, when the adapter is not plugged in to the mini, or when the PC audio on "TAPE IN" is not being pushed to my headphones/main mix or unplugged.
That last one has me completely bewildered.
Other odd things I've noticed when testing: pushing TAPE audio to CR/Phones instead of the main mix results in somewhat more noise, though I'm not sure this is specific to the console noise. The issue is also independent of if the console's picture is actually being pushed to my monitor (I can unplug the mini's HDMI out, or swap to another input on my monitor without impact on the noise). Lastly, the other various inputs don't seem to impact it (that is to say, I've tried unplugging the main mix, SFC, TAPE out, etc. without any difference).
so... Help? The interaction with my PC's incoming audio really has me baffled. I thought maybe it was related to using my mobo's onboard audio solution, but at this point I don't think that's it.

GunCon + Trinitron = no bueno?
I bought a Guncon (the PSX version) today and tried it out with Time Crisis 2 on my PS2. Using component (well, composite on the 14" just to see if the line was working properly), I chained it through my 14" and 20" PVMs and then to my 27" Philips tv. The Philips, a regular consumer slot mask set, worked great. The gun followed where it was pointed at all times.
The two PVMs, however weren't so great. The center of the screen did well, but on the corners it would randomly lose its aim, and it seems to affect the 14" more than the 20". Could it be the size of the screen? I'd think that wouldn't affect it since people had smaller screens. Maybe it's the TVL?
I have no problem whatsoever playing it on the Philips, it just seemed odd. Does anyone have any experience with lightguns (specifically those that use the composite line) across different screens that they could help out with?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Did you try plugging jus into each Trinitron? I'm just guessing, but I wonder if there's not a timing problem due to the chaining (though why it would work best on the last link in the chain seems to cast doubt on this idea).

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
That's a good theory, I'll look at it tomorrow.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I solved the comb filter/ professional monitor problem by purchasing a super VHS VCR. no comb filter needed for S-video.FinalBaton wrote: Yeah thinking about it, as long as the DVR have a 480i outputs option for RGB/component that means that it will not process the input signal further than comb-filtering. I think I hadn't drank my coffee yet when I posted, haha
As for why I'm looking for a comb filter : my NEC rgb monitor has NO comb filter whatsoever! (something that even consumer TVs have). composite input on it looks atrocious. I can't use the composite input on the NEC... I just can't.
Also : I know nothing about TBCs, so I wouldn't know where to start! Can you tell me more about it?
as far as timebase correctors go, they improve or remove video artifacts introduced by the VHS medium, you can get pretty close to laser disc quality video with a good timebase corrector.
my JVC unit only has a 2mb digital TBC, which is fine for most of my needs. very rarely do I ever run into a tape that causes me problems. ( really old and bad quality tapes will sometimes not work with a 2mb TBC, so more expensive decks have a 4mb TBC).
paired up with my VP50 pro my VHS tapes look excellent on any of my CRTs or LCDs. (only if you're crazy like me and want everything de-interlaced. lol)
here's a good example of the output clarity, (unfortunately the colors/contrast aren't properly calibrated, but when they are. it looks very striking).

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
The clarity you get in your setup is very good Blair!
For the TBC : I think I will not invest in one, since my Sony SVO player has a very stable picture already. I have a feeling that I won't gain much by adding an external TBC. (maybe Fudoh can confirm/deny this).
I wonder if the SVO actually has an internal TBC? I remember reading about how some professional VHS decks do have one.
By tweaking the deck's sharpness knob and the NEC's sharpness setting in conjunction, I actually managed to get a sharp picture. Looks good now. But there might be still room for improvment. I ordered 2 comb filters (one is a line doubler in addition) and will test them and compare the results. And if they're not worth it, then no big deal : I can sell them on Ebay for the same price I bought them.
One is the Kramer FC-10D. The other is a Faroudja LD-100. That last one is a line doubler(the NEC crt takes 480p natively, so I'll be able to reap the benefits of deinterlacing on it) that's supposed to be quite good with video based material. It also has a supposedly quite capable comb filter in it's front end, in addition to a couple other tweaks.
Once I receive them and give them a good test I'll let you know how it went

it's not going in the AV furniture under my main TV, so it'll be fine (I'll have space to store it).
Do you think that an LD-100 will do a good job with deinterlacing video material + comb filtering?
I don't need 16:9 display capability, so that's why I didn't go with a DVDO vp50 or the such. Plus, the comb filter in these DVDO units is supposedly not very good from what I've read
