Trails In The Sky is my new standard for video game character writing.

It's like anime, except it's good.

It didn't bore me at all despite stuff like the school play 'episode' where there was barely any combat or exploration present.
Considering there's no (real) dialogue choices to be made or anime chicks to fap to in order to grab my attention, I'd consider the writing in TitS an impressive feat.

Yeah, I loved it. It managed to make near 40 hours of slice of life so fun in a video game that I started to miss it a bit when the high adventure started to kick in.

The Omen (1976)

One of the oldest on my to-watch list.
It was okay.
I always have a hard time feeling the same scare a christian viewer probably would with that religious symbolism and all, but the film still managed to put me in the mood (not much more so than The Exorcist though).
Also reminded me a lot of The Ninth Door with its quest-like devil-themed scenario.

Depends how it's handled, Rosemary's Baby already did much better just a while before it became a trend. Some people love that era's take to the point they imitate it today (check: The House of the Devil), society was still kind of naive on some topics in the everyday life, for many such things still had that 'taboo' flavour to experiment a first time on the big screen. It's almost a requirement to remember that state of mind to appreciate movies of the era, and not just with horror.
Maybe the many 80's horror flicks for instance, speak more to you, but today a lot of people who didn't live it find these borderline soporific.

The 80's horror spoke more to me at the time (born in 77'). Like you said though lots of things we liked as kids don't do it for us anymore. While there are probably a few reasons for this I think the biggest and most obvious one is we have simply grown up (er..on some levels?) and the things we find entertaining have changed. When we go back and view something we used to like it just doesn't seem very good anymore in most cases. Some movies though have aged very well (Ghostbusters and Alien come to mind), but they are the exception.

I suppose how our tastes change with regards to food is a similar experience. I eat lots of things now that as a child I wouldn't touch.

I was first exposed to Super Sentai with the French dub of Turboranger (Turboranger, on avant! ).
It was popular, since after it finished they aired the original (subtitled) version of Jetman.

Re-Animator (1985) - yeah I know, better late.

It's not as good as Evil Dead and certainly not Braindead, but it's got worthy-enough comedy gore and weirdness for your romantic movie evening.

I have the same problem with Re-Animator the movie as I had with the original story by H.P. Lovecraft - severed head speaking makes no sense (no exhalation - no voice, end of story).

The sound of explosions supposed to happen in outer space is about as okay with me as the other off-screen sounds in films - I simply don't deem the film's "microphone" being anywhere near its "camera(s)" necessary.*
The head I have a problem with, however, has no means of exhalation, whereas we are supposed to assume that voice heard by the characters is neither hallucination, nor illusion.

*) MAYBE if the camera suggested an off-screen CHARACTER peeking (as it does sometimes - not only in the likes of Hardcore Henry or Strange Days, but also, kind of, in Don't Look Now if memory serves), I would expect "first person microphone" as well.

Of all the horrific things imagined by H.P. Lovecraft, you have a problem with a simple severed head talking.

The story is science-fiction, though. Eponymous dude animates corpses by his invention, so the head ruins my willing suspension of disbelief (adding insult to injury, its writing is also exceptionally graphomanic, to the point of undermining my faith in post-Great War pulp fiction).

This kind of thing makes those who don't really have what it takes to write a good pulp story think everybody can do it. I for one am quite sure it takes something that can't be acquired (same goes for genuine melodrama).

Yes I thought 'WTF how can it make a sound?' as well, but I really did see the movie as another goofy gore flick, nothing more involved that that.
If you leave it in that class -where it belongs - it does its job well.

I assumed whatever was in the green glowy stuff could force air through the neck without lungs the same way it was able to force blood through the circulatory system without a heart.

And we're not even talking about how the head was able to control the body without any nerve connections.

You could always say that even though he was following (Hollywood) scientific procedure, he may have independently re-discovered some ancient magic when developing the green stuff.

The Nice Guys

Los Angeles, 1977. A modest P.I. and a guy who intimidates people for money are randomly involved in the same case, and when a victim and some bad guys emerge from the initial confusion they join forces and become friends.

Fun, but not as much as it should be; characters and dialogues are curiously heartless. There are plenty of gratuitous and/or cruel deaths, but no sex despite plenty of opportunities; characters are oblivious to personal problems like loneliness and alcoholism; the large-scale plot is absurd.

X-Men Apocalypse

Overblown at the end and a good 25 minutes too long, this third part of an extended X-Men origin story still represents the only decent thing Marvel studios have produced in a long while.

Several elements that work in their favour:

- An extended origin story
- Bryan Singer being at least competent as director, despite prior fuckups
- Fassbender
- Setting being the 70s and now 80s, which works wonders because they were the time periods X-MEN comics were best recognised and therefore contribute enormously to the atmosphere of the movies. Far superior to present day based CG shit like Captain America 3/Avengers 2 etc

Plenty of plotholes and nonsensical character developments in this one, but all in all fairly solid despite missed opportunities. Tye Sheridan makes a good young Cyclops.

The Arrival

It's still beyond belief that an actor as useless as Charlie Sheen was ever the highest paid on TV (before he started 'winning'). He's consistently shit in this piece of trash which is a good reminder of why everything about the 80s was far superior to the 90s.

Garbage and a waste of life. Avoid.

Dark City

Amazingly hurt by very poor editing, the film does look like a million dollars - beautifully dressed and lit. All prizes to the designers as well as solid performance from William Hurt. The intrigue is there and it's interesting enough until the reveal after which it becomes less weighty and loses all its punch before devolving into a bad CGI telekenisis match.

No masterpiece but still a fairly worthwhile effort for the good parts.

Sounded interesting about a guy who lives in New York City who seems to always have an Eskimo dream about one guy going out and finding the largest fish they have ever caught. After that it turns into going to see an uncle in Arizona, meeting a mother and daughter at the uncle's car dealership and so on. Johnny Depp and Jerry Lewis are in this early 90s movie. It is somewhat strange of a movie as a good portion of it is spent with building of a flying machine and Johnny Depp's character falling for the mother. Gotta find a copy of this in its original form and not with 20 minutes cut out!

Marvel characters, yes, but this wasn't done by Marvel Studios (Disney). Fox owns the rights to the X-Men still.

I have a problem with Emir Kusturica films and their ilk (such as Władysław Pasikowski films; funnily enough, The Flight of the Golden Fly by Ivan Kravchyshyn I did like rather than not reminded me of both). Paradoxically, when Kusturica made American movie just like his former-Yugoslavian ones, I felt reassured (that my problem was with the director rather than origins of his films).

Now Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows was a fun movie. It was much more lighthearted and I thought it captured the feel of the 1987 cartoon, and I even sang along with the cover of the TMNT theme over the credits.
