Which shmups that has "stage transitions" feature?

Post by EXEXEX »

I remember playing Rayforce on MAME while back, and the game was amazing especially it has a cutscene-like stage transition which you proceed to next stage!

Also, are there other shmups that has it?

Obviously Kamui, RefleX, and Alltynex Second also lets you move (and fast-forward!) during cutscenes

Gradius, kinda. Not really a cutscene, but the stages (outside of 5) have always been seemless.

Einhander is also kind of a borderliner, in that you fly to the next area without any kind of fade out, but a transparent scoring screen and a mission briefing are overlayed as you fly there.

Most Toaplan shmups don't have any kind of fade out to load the next area, but are one continuous journey. Sometimes with pit stops or transparent score screens, some times not.

Ketsui same as the einhander example.

Hyper Duel has some memorable ones. Almost on par with Rayforce, almost.

Eschatos.
Besides a loading icon on the lower right corner of the screen after every boss battle.

Yeah, Eschatos's journey is grandiose. A trip to the moon! (Kinda like Rayforce in reverse)

A journey from the moon to Earth (or vice versa) is what I see rather often in SHMUPs

There are a couple of shooters where you dock with an aircraft carrier or other transport between levels, but then take right off from there after the post-stage tally; 1942 comes most immediately to mind. While we're over in Capcom-ville, Varth is another one with no real breaks between levels.

Docking-wise, Carrier Air Wing and UN Squadron come to mind.

Outzone!

Dogyuun!

Ether Vapor does it among the PC shmups.

Welp, thats my contribution.

I think Raiden needs a mention here. It's all 1 long vertical "stage" with breaks after bosses. There is an extended transition when you go to space.

RayCrisis G-Net version is notable in that it not only has transition cutscenes, but also keeps the music playing since each of the game tracks is actually one game-long track each. Sadly this is watered down in the PS1 version, which has music and backgrounds fading out as the next stage loads, presumably due to hardware limitations.

Nah. You'd zoom off at the end of a stage and between levels, you'd select weapons. When you were done, it'd abruptly bring you to the next stage.
