Possible short film of R-Type. Looks really cool!

Post by Arcatech »

Wouldn't it be cool if someone made an anime out of R-Type? For me, that series has some of the best art design. Love how it gives me that yucky vibe fighting the bydo.

Just thought I would share this here because it impressed me. Paul Johnson seems be working on something like this idea.

Does anybody here know more about this project?

Well damn if that isn't cool. A few more R-Type ones he's made:

https://twitter.com/OtaKing77077/status ... 9015759872

https://twitter.com/OtaKing77077/status ... 2681767940

A quick look through his account reveals he's making it for the Youtube channel mashed. So I'm guessing it'll be an animated version of R-Type's first stage. Whatever it's going to be, I'm looking forward to it.

I have trouble with the voice acting (my being low on endorphines isn't helping), but it looks very faithful to the source material. Reminds me of the better R-Type ports to systems that couldn't touch the original hardware, but somehow did the game justice. Or Star Dudes as I remember them...

Very nicely animated indeed.
Spoiler
Right at the end, when they're wondering if other games in the arcade work the same way, there's just a second of music from Ghosts 'n Goblins...foreshadowing for the next video?

Really captures that 'awful 90's dub' feel.

Have American dubs ever been (on the average) better than this? I can think of merely a handful of well-dubbed in English anime shows from the last decade (namely the TV RahXephon and The Big O). From nineteen-nineties - MAYBE the first two Tenchi Muyo! OAVs and that animated Batman (some of which drawn by Sunrise by the way). Afro Samurai was particularly awful. Actually, The Big O is from the 'nineties too.

The actual voice acting is fine, it's mostly just that the one-liners are pretty bad. Though, I did get a good chuckle out of "aaand I can't see shit". :P

But really, the animation was as good as I'd hoped! I can really only complain about the mouthing, and some of the anatomy and movements of the guy in general.

I was most pleased with the iconic explosions [ikewise, impressed me in the GB(C) port lately]. The sort of thing which strikes many years after finding a game, like that the Force's profile resembles hands bracing a sphere.
Character animations aren't great, but let's face it - the majority of anime fares no better in this regard.
The elephant in the room is - I didn't like the protagonist. Having to witness his exploits in more episodes, or a feature film, would likely put me off.

I feel so angry at the protagonist. I mean really. R-type? He dies from the first boss of R-type?

I'd understand this for so many other games, even.

I think he's meant to be a stereotypical casual gamer. I remember him criticizing the game for being 2D or something like that, unless he merely meant it as a "how I wish I was inside the game".

I've died to the first boss a couple times. Hell, I've even managed to Game Over on the first stage before...

Been watching it, it's beawtiful. Don't mind the voice acting, they capture the 'english dub' perfectly.

The protagonist... is a bit too much of a stereotypical "today's kids" guy. for that reason, he is a bit hard to relate to. but the rest was absolutely awesome. thanks for sharing this.

That was fantastic. Absolutely gorgeous. Well, other than the fact that Otaking still can't animate people in any capacity whatsoever. The TIE-Fighter short had this issue, and this seems to continue in that vein as well.
The mechanical animation and enemies looked great, so fucking stylish.

Protagonist was kind of an idiot, but it felt deliberate, like the short was making fun of him.
also, I know it went up only a day or two ago, but I feel kind of silly for not having seen it as soon as it went up, I love this man's work
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Same fella did this cool Star Wars Tie Fighter anime short as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN_CP4SuoTU

I like that sexy Tie-Bomber female pilot...too bad she doesn't show more skin (perhaps during her leisure at her private quarters on-board a Star Destroyer, hmmm?).

Quite impressive nevertheless...didn't know that a Tie-Bomber fightercraft could launch so many missiles at once (ala Macross-style homage) as a defensive tactic. Wow (of course, watching the classic TESB flick just shows them dropping bombs on meteorites as standard fare and nothing more than that).

It'd be cool if this Paul Johnson dude could work on a cool Cave STG anime short or even a Success Corp./Skonec Psyvariar I/II themed anime short would be priceless, indeed.

Whatever comes next will surely be worth the wait.

Not to mention the cool nod of the classic Larami produced Super Soaker 50 water gun mounted on the wall as a display piece (before Larami was bought out by Hasbro back in the day). Definitely from the late 1980s all the way. Even the venerable white PC Engine factory console box art is shown in all it's glory as well.

I recall having to scrounge up a mere four quarters just to play a single session of Afterburner Deluxe cabinet at the Modesto, CA based Tilt! arcade joint back in 1987-1988. Those were the days when quarters were considered the gold standard to coin 'em up. Gotta feed those hungry coin slots, right? Of course, during the X-Mas shopping season, all the arcade games and pinball machines would be dressed up with price tags ripe for the taking provided that you had enough cash on hand to take 'em home at the Tilt! arcade -- it was a yearly tradition back in those days to see 'em priced for sale. I'd see the AB deluxe cab up for sale but with a whopping $12,000 USD price tag -- too rich/expensive for an arcade gamer like myself back in those days of lore.
