Important PC Engine GT question
Is a standard PC Engine adapter (say, the one that comes with the Duo-R) compatible with the PC Engine GT?
I have an opportunity to purchase a GT w/o AC adapter for $50. But I won't bother with it if I can't use my existing AC adapter.

I'm not sure. I was registered here as "sleeveboy" but somehow, over the course of several server moves, and for arcane reasons beyond my mortal ken, my account somehow became "closed" or "inactive."PaCrappa wrote:That I don't know. What happened to your old time honored screenname Eric?

What's the TFP address, Pa? I can't find it (I usually check the PM you sent me on TNL for the address, but I can't access TNL at work). I wanted to post this question there as well.

It's very slowly building a little steam over there but for the last two days it's been Recap and dcharlie having a pissing match. Some things never change.

Re: Important PC Engine GT question
The answer to your question is no and here's why. The PC Engine GT or the NEC Turbo Express use a special AC adapter with special voltage supplied from it and the original PC Engine AC adapter won't work with such handheld system in the first place.Eric Manch wrote:Is a standard PC Engine adapter (say, the one that comes with the Duo-R) compatible with the PC Engine GT?

Followup:
I bought the thing last night. Turns out they were selling the thing with 5 HuCards (including Kunio-kun Dodgeball and R-Type) for $50.
Does the Turbo Express adapter work with the PC Engine GT, or is it the wrong voltage? The listing on Lik-Sang seems to suggest that it is compatible, but I'd like some confirmation.
Also: does anyone have some recommendations for cleaning HuCards? The contacts for the five games are pretty dusty.

Depends on how dirty. If it's just a big dust build up, you can get it off with soft eraser (not a pencil eraser though) by gently rubbing it along the contacts, it will pick up a LOT of dirt.Eric Manch wrote: Also: does anyone have some recommendations for cleaning HuCards? If that fails, boil some water and dampen a very soft cloth (no paper towels

Don't let the stuff sit, actually dry it yourself, that's usually when you'll get the most dirt off.
If you want to make something like an actual cleaning solution, use 2 parts distilled water to one part ispropyl rubbing alcohol, that's what I use on my NES games.
If it's more recent dirt you can just use some clean water.

Good question. There's no dirt visible to the naked eye, but the cards only boot maybe 10%-20% of the time. They seem to work more reliably on my Duo, but even it has problems reading them.Depends on how dirty. I'm still in Tucson, but I visit Phoenix frequently. And if you've still got some spare HuCards to sell, I'm interested in buying.Nice to see ya, Eric! We gotta do lunch again sometime (if yer still in the area!)!

NEC TE handheld AC adapter works on PCE GTs & vice versa
Since both the Japanese NEC PC Engine GT and USA NEC TUrbo Express are hardware-same (but cosmetically outward appearance is slightly different for both handhelds), either PC Engine GT AC adapter or NEC Turbo Express AC adapter will work on either handheld system without any problems. One can play the Japanese Hu-Cards on USA Turbo Express using Hu-Card Convertor but the original Japanese NEC PC Engine GT would have to modified internally (even with Hu-Card convertor to play USA Hu-Cards).Eric Manch wrote:Followup:

Try dipping some Q-tips in rubbing alcohol and lightly rubbing the dirt off the Hu-Card cartridge contacts...that trick works for me.
Note: Just be sure that the cartridge contacts are complete dry before plugging into Duo console and booting them up. Your Japanese Hu-Cards will thank you for cleaning them up...their former careless owner neglected them! And storing them in their original Hu-Card cover sleeve helps quite a bit also. ^_~
