Salt & Sanctuary
I completed my first playthru of this last night--goddamn! I'm extremely impressed with this game. The second half, especially, just blew me away. Immediately after concluding my first run I spun up a character for a level 1 game and stayed up until 2:00AM which is way too late for a work night. I really want to be playing more right now.
Are you guys playing this?

I looked at some screens and stuff back when this was announced; I'm kind of wary of current platformers after Castle In The Darkness, Aban Hawkins, and even Volgarr...I'd like to try it out sometime but I think I'm more interested in getting through the "full" 3D versions of the Souls type concept for now. Good to hear it's impressive, though.

Re: Salt & Sanctuary
It has as much Metroid/Castlevania influence as it does Souls, but truthfully it is something all its own despite its obvious homages. I have not played Castle in the Darkness or Aban Hawkins, but I would certainly place this above Volgarr (which I also enjoyed).
Re: Salt & Sanctuary
I'm trying to. Second boss is kicking my ass, but I've only grabbed an hour or so yet. Not sure that the combat is as refined as it's inspiration, but pretty amazing stuff from a 2person team. Finding the artwork very uneven - the backdrops are lovely, but some of the sprite work.... Yuck.

Necro, you and I need to talk about this game. I think if this was a ps1 game, it might have been the best game of that console. Obviously this game lacks the polish of SotN, but it has so much depth that it makes AAA titles from the PS1 era look ill conceived. Of course, that's dark souls' fault, but still, here we are in 2016 with a game that has a stupid amount of depth, level design, stats, lore, blah blah blah. I'm terrified DS3 is going to pull me away from this title, but S&S deserves better!
Edit: I really want to add that I'm surprised there are so few posts here about this game. This title is in effect a love letter to so many 2D gamers, and a truly interesting one given how many ideas went from Zelda/Metroid/Castlevania to the Souls titles, and so Ska Studios had kindly taken those ideas from Souls and brought them back to 2D. Of course, things aren't so simple, we don't just have Zelda again, but something completely new. Why isn't this a forum favorite by now?

Re: Salt & Sanctuary
This game definitely has my attention, but I'm waiting for it to be released on the PC.
Re: Salt & Sanctuary
Personally, it's come out at just the wrong time. I've only managed to grab a few hours over the last two weeks or so, and I'll be picking up Souls 3 later today, which will pretty much eat my gaming time for the next three months.
My six year old son is loving it, just cleared the second boss.

I sunk an incalculable amount of hours into Dishwasher: Dead Samurai when it came out, it is an excellent game. If you haven't played it you should. Dark, gritty, ultra violent, great music and characters, and most importantly the game play is tight.
I finished it multiple times on every difficulty save the highest, I just couldn't beat the Fallen Engineer.
When I first saw Salt and Sanctuary my immediate first thought was that it looked like Dishwasher, then I found out it is the same team. I am completely sold on this and cannot wait to play it.

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.
Re: Salt & Sanctuary
Is it any good?
My first concern when seeing some gameplay footage was that it apes Dark Souls too much without adding something new. Then again I haven't played Salt or Dark Souls.

The games are literally in different dimensions. 2d vs 3d.Durandal wrote:My first concern when seeing some gameplay footage was that it apes Dark Souls too much without adding something new.
The existence of platforming/jumping at all should be enough to set them apart.
Also shame on you, go play Dark Souls/Mars Matrix

Main difference with Salford is that you don't get stiffed on bosses because of a shitty camera.Durandal wrote:Is it any good?

In seriousness, it does ape Souls totally in the stat and quest side of things, but the 2D makes it feel different, if in fact, I guess you're doing the same shit most of the time.
